What Nationality Are You Usually Mistaken For?

Tue Sep 25, 2007 2:35 am

Some people have their nationality written all over them, others don't. When traveling abroad or working with foreigners, do you play the "guess my nationality" game? I do, and as yet not a single person has managed to label me with what's written on my passport.

On the basis of looks, most people think I'm German, including Germans.
But as soon as I open my mouth, my idiosyncratic accent (present in all the languages I speak) tends to disorient people.

When I speak English, Brits tend to assume I'm American, and Americans think I'm British.
When I speak French, I'm asked where in the UK I'm from 90% of the time. Belgians and Frenchmen have often told me my demeanor and mannerisms suggest I'm British.

Last year, when I grew a full beard, my appearance changed so dramatically that when I walked around Istanbul with my camera hidden, all touts ignored me and random people asked me for directions - in Turkish.

Well, I'm neither of the above, according to my passport. I'm also not Belgian.

I never tell where I was born unless required to do so for legal purposes, because a) I consider it a useless piece of information, b) I like to piss people off by not allowing them to put me in one of the folders in their stereotype database.

So, what nationality have you been mistaken for?

When meeting me people usually ask if I'm Swedish (blonde hair, blue eyes - i can see it myself to be fair)

On the phone, or when I meet people who don't think the above, I get a lot of "I can't place your accent". I think because my Dad is from JNB (accented english), and I was educated in a US system, but was born in UK and lived there for years.

British.

Everywhere I go, I am asked if I am from the UK or something like that or if my Birthplace was in London.

I've been mistaken for a German once in Canada and again in Florida, even though I'm English. I think it's because I use very strong northern vowels, especially 'u' ( as in bus).

People think I'm either Irish or Australian (I'm actually English!)

People within the company I work for, usually get me confused with the only other guy in the office. He's American with an American accent, I'm English with an English accent  banghead

I'm mistaken for a Martian. That's what my nephew and nieces call me, Uncle Martian.

Why? I have no idea. Sometimes they make me very very angry.

I think one of the girls that used to cut my hair asked me if I was of Italian descent. I guess the dark hair, olivish complexion, and body hair might confuse people.

My girlfriend gets mistaken for a lot of things. When we were at the NY State Fair somebody thought she was Puerto Rican.... she's Native American.

So post a pic. We won't diss you, honest.  Wink

I don't usually get mistaken for any particular nationality until, when I'm in the States, people ask where I'm from. The conversation usually goes like this:

"You have an accent. Where are you from?"

"Ireland".

"Holland?"

"No, Ireland"

"Where's that?"

"Next to England"

"Oh Eyer-land"

And no, I'm not casting aspersions on Americans: it's simply a case of different pronunciation. Americans expand their vowels, whereas we tend to shorten them. So "Ireland" to Americans becomes "Eyer-land", while we say "Ar-land".

That is actually kind of funny. A good friend of mine from college has the problem. He was born in Mumbai, though raised in the US, he looks like he could be Mexican if you figure that any person with black hair and darker skin automatically = Mexican. Oh, and it doesn't help that his last name is Fernandez.

Same here, although it's 50/50 between being asked where I'm from, or asked if I'm Australian. I definitely don't think I look Australian, and I have a South London accent.  Confused

I get mistaken for being Argentinian but I'm actually Italian, although It's understandable considering I've lived in Argentina on and off since 1992  Smile

Sometimes people from the US think I'm from there too since I don't have a "foreign" accent when speaking English.

South African

Zimbabwean

I've been mistaken for a scouser (When i'm not, i don't even have the accent, only some of my words have the slight accent). I've also been mistaken for a Spaniard (Why, i have no idea considering i'm not even that tanned) and a Dane (Somebody tried to grab me in Bakken theme park and run off with me - whilst screaming at me in Danish. I think he was a drunken paedophile or something... but all i did was kick him, and run off to somebody i actually knew... i only went for a piss and i nearly get abducted!)

I really don't know how i look Scandinavian, i'm not the stereotypical blonde hair blue eyed boy people imagine. I've got hazel eyes and light brown hair!

I've been mistaken for a German too, because i was saying what i wanted for a meal in German to the waiter (Out of the 4 people in our group, i was the only person who spoke enough German to order the meal, and the waiter didn't speak much English..... pretty embarrassing when a 42 and 35 year old who did German at school for 3 and 4 years get owned by a 13 year old.)

I've been mistaken for being an Italian and German (even though I really don't look like an Italian.. the woman who asked me wasn't too bright anyway)

Danes often get mistaken for being German in many places from what I've experienced... people are not able to identify the language but they think it sounds a little similar to German I guess....

Reminds me of the time my Arabic friend from high school was mistaken for a Chaldean. I'm not of Middle Eastern descent, but this was pretty funny.

Random Chaldean: "Say, aren't you Chaldean?"

George: "No, I'm Arabic"

Random Chaldean: "I swear you look exactly like my cousin.....who is Chaldean."

Me:  Yeah sure

George: "Dude, I'm telling you I'm Arabic, not Chaldean!"

argument goes on for 5 minutes, getting extremely elaborate between cultural differences

5 minutes later..................

George: "Alright, fine, I'm Mexican! Happy now?"

Me:  rotfl

Probably the funniest thing I've seen in high school  rotfl

haha!! I know what he means!! You can just tell a black voice form a white voice. I just can't describe how though. It's like when you watch a cartoon and you can try to picture the actor doing the voice. Sometimes you just automatically picture a black guy or white guy.

Anyway, I often get mistaken for Italian in regards to my first name. Apparently spelling it "Ricci" seems Italian to everyone, it doesn't say that to me at all.

When I came back to Germany after 2 1/2 years in Ireland, many English language speakers (British, Australians, Americans...) thought that I was Irish. Back then I spoke English with as fairkly strong Irish West Coast accent (If I live for a longer period in a certain place, I tend to pick up the local accent), but over the last 7 years I've lost it pretty much.
