The "Blackout Brawl": Greatest Hockey Fight Ever?

Mon Oct 29, 2007 1:46 am

My brother, via his 9-year old, hockey-crazy son, found this video on YouTube. It was a fight in the 1987 Junior World Cup Tournament. The USSR is in Red, Canada in White.

It is known as "The Blackout Brawl", as you'll see. I'm trying to fnd the Canadian roster for that year, to see who was on that team. I do know Theo Fleury was on that team. Maybe some of our Canadian friends can fill us in more on it.

I love the commentators; "According to the rules of international hockey, this is not permitted!"
Like, no shit!  rotfl   rotfl

What were the consequences of this fight? Pretty embarrassing for both nationalities.

Both teams were disqualified, and, I believe, because of that, Finland was given the Gold Medal. I can't find much on this game. Would be interesting to read more.

What's interesting is the crowd reaction in both videos. They don't like that fighting shit in Europe. Us dumb-ass North Americans ENCOURAGE this kind of behavior.

That Sens-Flyers stuff was just so ridiculous.

When The Light's Went Out by Gare Joyce is a book about the whole situation. I read it back in the summer, it's a good read if you want to learn more about the whole situation.

Bullshit! Braws ARE part of a hockey game. I always like to see a good brawl on the ice.  bigthumbsup

I think most embarassing is
a) the Russians fighting with the gloves one
b) those geniuses organizers in Piestany, (then) Czechoslovakia who decided to turn off the lights, pretty stupid and for those on the ice incredibly dangerous decision imho

Not just the fight, the whole tournament, how the fight was handled, the repercussions. It's really a good read for a hockey fan, not too long, but interesting.

i think it is more often referred to as the 'punch up in Piestany'. At least that is what i usually hear it called.

Wasn't there a hockey fight that involved the then-New England Whalers and Minnesota Saints of the World Hockey Association that became legendary for its length and innumerable penalties? I believe the fight happened on April 11, 1975.

No thanks. I'd rather watch a Gretzky's artistry any day. You can have those IQ-depraved goons, thank you. If I want to see a good fight, I'll go to Vegas.  Yeah sure

Hey, even the great ones like Bobby Orr and Gordie Howe got into the occasional brawl from time to time.
