Iraqi Fisherman Nets Shark 160 Miles From Sea

Wed Oct 31, 2007 8:19 pm

And here's the best bit!

Quote:

Locals blamed the U.S. military for the shark's presence.

Tahseen Ali, a teacher, said there was a "75 percent chance" Americans had put the shark in the water.

"This is very frightening for us. Our children always swim in the river and I believe that there are more sharks. I believe that America is behind this matter," said fisherman Hatim Karim.

I guess in Iraq they've never heard of the Lake Nicaragua Shark or the Zambezi River Shark, both of which are regional variations of the Bull Shark?

Bull Sharks are a coastal species that can easily swin in water just a few inches deep and they have long been known to swim many miles up freshwater rivers with no apparent ill effects. The shark in the photo appears to be a Bull Shark, although it's hard to tell for sure because: A- It's a photo of the shark's head only, and B- Bull Sharks are some of the most generic-looking and indistinct shark species alive today. However, if you catch a fairly large shark in fresh water with no distinguishing features and it's that murky light brown color, it's almost a lead-pipe cinch that it's a Bull Shark.

It is not necessary to go as far. In Aqaba and Eilat there is a small kind of shark, but no problem during day as they are not dangerous. At night however, patrols of the Israeli and Jordanian army patrol up and down to make sure that nobody goes swimming as the sharks at night approach the coastline and could fell attacked if a swimmer surprised them. What they of course like is kitchen-rubbish from the ships in the seaports in both cities there.

I have never heard of sharks in the Arabian Gulf, but can imagine that some found their ways to those places. That they might go upstream into Mesopotamia is easy to imagine. And who knows, they possibly find USarmy food interesting !

I have been there, and did a lot of swimming. But NEVER saw a shark myself, in spite of them being not so far away in considerable numbers. The only special thing was that the water in the Gulf of Aqaba is almost three times as salty as the Mediterranean or four times as salty as the Atlantic, so that you needed cream before going to swim and needed to do a careful browsing after swimming in order not to get stiffened. But Aqaba is a very pleasant holiday-resort which can be highly recommended. And to talk with the Jordanian army patrolmen in the small beech-bar was quite amusing ! We asked them whether they had better relations with the Israelis or with the sharks and they freely told us that they preferred the Israelis with whom they had daily coffee-chats right ON the border.

Another point to consider...
If the Americans put the sharks in the rivers, why were the sharks not armed with guns?
It can't have been the Yanks then.

Nice. Good to see some people realize that indoctrination is occurring on both sides of this debacle.
