Carbon Footprint: Goals For 2008

Fri Nov 02, 2007 5:58 pm

So everyone, coming up on 2008 soon, what is your carbon footprint goal?

Here's a website to calculate your carbon footprint:
http://www.whatsmycarbonfootprint.com/calculate.htm

The average seems to fluctuate but being under 10 tons seems to be good.

Mine is 25.433 tons per year right now. So for next year I am shooting for 28 tons, about a 9% increase. Seems reasonable, and achieveable.

How do I plan to achieve this? I plan to fly more on all aircraft types, leave my lights on longer hours, and increase my driving habits.  Smile

How about you?

9.8 Tons per year.

what is your carbon footprint goal?

I don't really have one. I just try to be as efficient as I can.

Damn...32.1 tons per year. And that's for only two people in the household.  rotfl

Meh, I always wanted waterfront property. Maybe it'll happen sooner than I thought.  Big grin

C'mon, you can do 30.  Wink

Assuming that all my flights are short flights, then I have 42.8. Hmmm. But then again, I don't think it's meant to calculate flights of flight students. It is possible that my profession is a crime against humanity.

I've taken four of the carbon footprint tests found on line, including the one you linked to. So far, here are my numbers:

25.3
17.5
33.0
12.0

using the same data - or close to the same - in each test.

Quite a variance.....

I'm somehow emitting 147 tons of carbon dioxide - I suspect a direct conversion of my utility bills from GBP to USD might account for that!

That said, it could shortly be a large number next year if I get an airline job!

64.76 tonnes - woohoo !! What do I win ? Apart from massive second-hand guilt and the submergence of the Maldives ?

From 40 short haul, 20 medium haul and 40 long haul flights per year on average. The rest of my footprint barely even registers.

Found the same thing. Different sites seem to calculate it differently. You average about 22, do you have any goals to set?

Ya, I had alot of flights to estimate. I'll try to push alot of students to fly when I start teaching next year to make the goal KFLLCFII set for me.  Smile

My answer was NaN less than 1. Can you believe this?

It is true that I do not have a car. I live in a warm climate so I don't use much heat. I always recycle everything as much as I can.

Even the number of flights I put in did not help. Maybe I will have to fly to the Moon or Mars to increase my carbon footprint.  Big grin

I'm a respectable 13.7, quite happy with that. I should recycle more but I help the environment by not driving and using public transport. Brighton has an excellent public bus system and trains connect me to work (advantages of working at a major international airport). I hardly fly anymore (3 short, 2 med and 1 long haul/year). I dont recycle which is my biggest obsticle but my local council dont make my task easy and so newspapers are the only thing that I recycle as they're collected along with my waste.

I don't even come up with a number. I don't have a car, I recycle, and the only utility (other than cable and phone) is the electric bill. I suppose I would run up more if it calculated how much public transit I take (about 80-100 km/week), meat I eat (mostly chicken about 5x/week), etc. However, I guess it helps living in a fairly small, 2 bedroom apartment versus a house.

I find this one to be better. It gives you a few more options.

http://www.bp.com/extendedsectiongen...tegoryId=9015627&contentId=7029058

According to that, I create 4 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. This is largely from about 2000 mi/year (average of 45 mi/week) on buses, 4 short-haul return trips and household energy (71%).

Also according to this, my carbon emissions take up a little over 2200 cubic metres, or almost the amount to fill an olympic sized pool.

Interesting facts. Kinda sobering considering I'm only one person (well, I included my roommate in the number of people in the apartment).

Alas, they tried it, but the Alderaan authorities denied planning permission for the conveyor belt - said it would disturb the habitat of some asteroid-dwelling pygmy voles.

And now they've announced a delay to the launch of the Death Star - apparently the construction has already used up every available fastener, rivet, philips-head screw, thumbtack, hot glue stick, elastic band and paper clip in the entire charted galaxy. The appropriate suppliers have been approached and psychically strangled, obviously, but the problem is not yet solved.
