It really is useless to argue with cops in the USA/Canada so give it a rest.

The reason why the whole world laughs at American drivers is because of our DMVs, the reason why almost no foreigner likes our cops (white, black, hispanic whatever) is the reason that the majority of cops here are either pre-programmed robots or on power trips and you cant talk to them like you can anywhere else in the world.

I got pulled over in different countries, and never did cops ask me such a dumbass question like "Do you know why I pulled you over?" or "Do you know how fast you were going back there"

Quoting Shadez (Reply 96):
And I do realize we need speed limits because idiots could get out of control. I don't expect the cop to realize my self awareness.

No, actually we dont need speed limits on highways. It worked perfectly fine in Montana for 3 years. Accidents and the number of people killed on highways went down every year and when the speed limit was put back in it shot up again.

What we need is the DMV stop giving away license like gift cards and the cops to stop pulling people over for driving 80 in a 65 in a field on a highway. Of course that wont happen. American runs on the "safety first" BS mentality so theres no chance of this ever happening.

it saves gas be happy. Going at 55 and going at 75, means a 30% reduction in fuel efficiency. Lets say you get 20MPG at 55MPG driving a Chevy Tahoe, at 75MPH youre probably going to get about 14-15MPG. Its makes all the difference.

How about driving a more fuel efficient car? Anyway, the real killer is the city driving, not highway. My fuel economy goes to hell when my car doesn't leave YXU for several months. When it gets on the highway, the story is entirely different.

I beg to differ. Your driving in the city can only fluctuate about 5-8%, but when youre driving on the Highway your fuel efficiency can fluctuate from 25-33%. Secondly, its not about the fuel efficiency of the cars, 99% of cars when reaching speeds above 55-60MPH have a decreasing fuel efficiency, sort of like the economic law of "diminishing returns".

Here is my proof

Yea I hate the robotic attitude most, basically not looking at the situation before deciding what should be done, instead repeating the same old shit.

Going off topic a bit....but still relevant to speed limtis and what not

I was backing out of a garage space like normal, when this guy comes out of a turn in the parking lot, speeding and hits me. I see him come out, and stop to let him pass but he's going so fast that he cant complete the turn on time and slams on his brakes, skids right into me, this all happened in about a second, because he was going so fast. You can also see it is a blind spot due to the house. Picture:

I'm thinking no big deal, I stopped, right of way or whatever....cop comes and says it's my fault, I was backing out improperly...WTF? If backing out slowly while looking backwards for cars and stopping when you see one is improper then what is proper? Anyways, he didn't give tickets because it is private property or whatever, so I can't even go to court. I asked him to write tickets and he refused, repeating the same old shit like a robot that it is private property. Dammit, of all the times I've had to deal with cops, I actually wanted a ticket this time and he didn't give one.

At this point I start getting pissed off and ask him that if I were to go 60mph in this parking lot I wouldnt get a ticket to which he says correct. WTF? What's the purpose of the 15mph speed limit sign in the front then? I pull out a tape measure, measure the skid marks and do the math right in front of him and the number came out to between 25-30mph before he slammed on his brakes. He still repeated his private property monologue like a robot, at this point I just gave up.

So tell me cops on airliners...how come this is allowed yet you single out a sheep from the herd to give a ticket for speeding on the highway?

BTW I no longer follow any posted speed limit or general traffic sign at any parking lot, because apparently nothing can be done about it if someone is violating it anyways  Yeah sure

But than the state lost some money. So the limits went right back up. Anyone from Miami Dade county knows of a few towns that have 15-20 car police forces for 2sq miles of land or less. These cities live on having low 30mph speed limits. Surfside,Bal Harbour,Biscayne Park.

It depends on many factors, the graph you showed me is oversimplified. And while I may lose some fuel by driving faster, sometimes it's not worth it.

And yes, it depends heavily on the car. Back in Europe I was able to get my family to the Italian seaside for 5.2 l/100 km (Suzuki Baleno) doing the limit +10. Try to beat that.

Similar story, I got hit once @ Higgins/Arlington Hts Rd...which is boundary of Elk Grove Village and Schamburg and the local cops couldnt write tickets because the road went through a county forest preserve. So that ahole that hit me didnt get a ticket and I had to drive all the way to Rolling Meadows to give witness to the Cook County Cops as to what happened.  banghead

Not all officers think one way or another. Some are lenient, others not so. Others, well it depends on the day and is up for interpretation. I am known to be one of the more proactive and have some of the higher ticket sales (if you get what I mean). The whole, "nine you're fine, ten you're mine," is an old saying.

If it's a "slow" day and there's traffic, well you might just get a 10 MPH ticket. Or, you may get a tint ticket. If I notice you have both violations and you fail the attitude test, well you just earned two receipts. Some people don't get it.

I am a car guy so traffic is my niche and I have more car knowledge than many on the road. I have more than a good idea what constitutes safe operation of a vehicle. You're going to get far less pull with a traffic officer or chippie.

The cop would have been correct, as you caused an obstruction to the flow of traffic while backing up. I went through nearly this exact same scenario, and it was explained to me that if I'd been rear-ended by someone doing 100MPH in a school zone, it would still be my fault, since I was the one backing up into traffic.

Maybe, but there was more than enough clearance to go through without even noticing I was there because not even half my car was out, it's just that he couldnt make a normal narrow turn because of how fast he was going. Either way, I'm more pissed about the fact that he didn't get a speeding ticket than the fact that I was "guilty". Why put up a 15mph speed limit sign if nothing is done about it? There were little kids running around there, this guy could've easily hit the kids as they were generally in the same area that I was. I assume he won't get away with it then, but if he hits another car all of a sudden it's OK? Talk about the dumbest laws

It doesn't matter. The law says (in most states, I'm told, though we could look that up if someone wants to make an issue of it), that the person backing up is always at fault, even if the other driver was speeding, or even if you didn't see the other car before pulling out. What the other car was doing, speeding, driving drunk, etc., is a completely unrelated event in considering how to place blame for an accident involving someone backing out of a parking space.

I know it doesn't. I'm not picking on you, I'm just saying that laws like that(if x then y no matter what) are stupid and unfair and there should be a way to be able to look at the circumstances before placing a blind fault on someone.

In this case one of these laws overruled the other, I was under the impression that if you get rear ended the other person is always at fault. Turns out that it's true, except only for this case where if you are backing out it's your fault. Once again the American system screwed me.

Now they are left with a damaged car and a humiliating experience.

Doubtful, I would say it was more the dog that set off the alarm. Being a semi local to Florida I can tell you there are plenty of the latin druggies running around so it would certainly add to suspicion seeing as he was in an Benz. Cops don't just randomly go out and do things. I call two strikes off the bat. Speeding and the dog. Any attitude given to the cop past that is going to just add to suspicion or make it all the more for them. My future inlaws are almost entirely in law enforcement in the NYC Long Island area. I get to listen in on the police banter all the time. Trust me, if a cop does not have warrented reason to persue something they are not going to it just adds to the headaches and lengthens their watch for that particular duty they are on for the day. Arrests are a pain in the ass from what I gather.

That's wicked, dude. If the rest of us could only be like you, there'd be no reason whatsoever to even have laws, traffic or otherwise. And law enforcement would become dispensable, that being the best part.

I haven't. All of this could have been avoided had he not been speeding, especially early morning when the cops are out in full force and there aren't many cars on the road (thereby increasing the probability of being pulled over for speeding). Ok but a test of your knowledge since you know HE good. Why is Higgins road a 45mph zone all the way past Golf Road intersection and then inexplicably turns into a 35mph zone (where cops ALWAYS sit) by the HE police department for about 1/4 mile and turns into a 50mph zone to Barrington.

Heres another speed limit mind defying question, Biesterfield exit off I-290 towards Meacham road. Right off the exit it goes from a 45mph to a 25mph limit after the intersection for about 1/2 mile. The road does not get smaller, there is no school there is nothing...except Elk Grove Cops sitting with guns.

Arrests can be a pain in the "ass" depending on the circumstances.

If I get into something at it goes beyond my shift, that's overtime and I am not complaining to anyone! I can't speak for everyone, but I have no hesitation to make an arrest when lawful. That's called the job. It certainly can be a pain when it takes up to 3 or more hours because there is an hour line to book, process and head back from the county jail to your beat.

Over here in the Dallas/Ft Worth area, in Arlington, cops started raiding bars for possible DWI party goers. So, they had undercover cops inside the bar, scouting for possible drunks. As soos as the person with a possible DWI were to leave, the undercover would call the other cops, already waiting outside.
There were some arrests. Most of them, for public intoxication. Not one DWI though. So, anyone leaving the bar, with the alcohol content above the limit, got arrested.

On a side note : tell your friend to drive on the speed limit next time. just in case.
First, I said 'hey' and then I said 'now'. "Hey Now!" - Hank K.

What's your point?

There are bad apples in every industry. Yes, it's more shocking in the police field than in others because of the authority and trust involved.

Based on this mans prior history, I am sure he was/is involved in his wifes disappearance. Does that mean every cop is a wife killer now?

rotfl  , everyone seems to point out Cops as power hungry, robotic SOB's who are racist. Ofcourse they're going to be a few ones like that, but that is certainly not the case with the majority of Cops. Cops become the "enemy" when people speed, blow stop signs, and other traffic violations and never assess their own mistakes, yet blame it on the authority for upholding the law, sad.

First off, Luisca, weren't you one of those guys a few years back saying 'racism and all that stuff' was over-blown and minorities were quick to make a bunch of noise about nothing? Oddly, it was A.net member Texdravid (native of India) who held the same views -- towing the hard conservative line on every subject-- then suddenly, he received a very heavy dosage of the very same 'treatment' as your friends....and then he woke up and never saw America in the same light again. He and his conservative haven't been heard from since.

I apologize if it was not you who held such a conservative view regarding race relations here in America... but I'm almost sure it was, if so.. it seems this episode in your life has exposed you to what happens to many minorities in this country on a daily basis and has gone on since cars were invented. Make no mistake, you're friends were certainly terrorized by these cops..they know exactly what they are doing when they pull this crap. I've seen cops coast-to-coast harass minority drivers to the extreme - sometimes, they land a big bust, most of the time they do not. I have never seen white drivers handled in the way of what your friends went thru.. however, I'm sure it has happened to some white drivers somewhere. But given that the majority of drivers in America are white..then all things being equal, we should see more 'white drivers being handled in the fashion your friend explained...'

...for instance, take this story..

Quoting FlyDeltaJets87 (Reply 33):
One day he got pulled over for running the red light. Cop asked him what he as a white guy was doing in East St. Louis at that hour of the morning and why he ran the red-light. My dad explained he was on his way to work and as for running the red-light, said "does this really look like the kind of neighborhood I want to be sitting around in?" The cop just laughed and let him on his way.

No slam against you DeltaJets, but flip that story..

Black guy tells the cop ""does this really look like the kind of neighborhood I want to be sitting around in?"...does anyone honestly think that cop would have still laughed and let him go too? Hell no!

But back Luisca's saga, I guarantee you when the cops 'ran the tags' they knew they could 'fcuk' with the guy, they know that coast-to-coast, the right 'address/zip code'? ... the cops then proceed with caution, not the wreckless abandon they dropped on your buds. 'the right 'address/zip code' use to not even apply to minority drivers in this way -- and they ended up getting the treatment anyway... but it sure as hell does matter today. But above all, cops do everything by the book when 'they know' (and THEY DO KNOW) when the offender possesses the financial might (translates to political) to strike back in a BS traffic stop. Your lawyer aunt intervention brought that episode to a screeching halt...no doubt about i, that's why the cops bailed... they didn't back off because they 'felt like it'..they sensed 'trouble' on the report/lawsuit front..and they are smart enough to do the math -- and disappear. Unfortunately too many studies back up the facts that racial profiling is very very real indeed. Just when I thought cops were entering a new age...we have that incident earlier this year -- with cameras present, LAPD cops beating down a prominent tv reporter and several cameramen..and didn't give a rats ass while they were doing it. And with all the new police powers, there are still too many 'I'm lord-king-god with this badge and gun' types running around..just which how many stories emerge in 2008 bearing out the truth to that very prediction....and race will be at the center of these stories-

Luisca," welcome to our world"

'Signed, far too many defenseless minorities who have up with that crap ALL their lives'

Yep, that was me, I used to live in a big city were I was the majority, now living in a redneck town in the middle of Florida I can see things a bit different.

A lot has changed; especially in my political view, remember this is the guy that twice supported Bush.

I still do think that people pull the race card unnecessarily, but on this occasion, the actions and demeanor of the officers was obvious, scary...
Do I have facts to prove this was race motivated? NO, but it sure felt like it that night.

I was not saying this traffic stop was race motivated, I was just pointing out how unreasonable the cop was, I am in my work uniform and after she pulls me over and talks to me she still insist on doing a sobriety test even though I am not drunk (nor do I appear drunk because I had not drank)

Very cool of you to own up to that when you could have easily dodge it...

...I just read your profile and realized you're pretty young. I do hope you witness less episodes than you just did -- unfortunately, it is not I, but the varied police forces around the nation who may very well permanently re-shape your views about 'law enforcement and race' in America. I'd love to be proven wrong about this.. but having faith in predictable human behavior is foolhardy at best. History portends what is to come. You're on fair ground to question whether this was racially motivated behavior or not... but after you see this occur again, a 3rd, a 4th, a 5th, 6th time...you are going to develop a new perspective about what's being going on around you. Many of the unfortunate people I mentioned above have seen these actions day-in, day-out, week after week, month after month and year after year...no guess work is needed, they know the score re: racial profiling ..and federally gathered data backs them up-

They let him go because he FINALLY produced the immigration documents that he's required by law to carry at all times. Read the OP. The guy's here on a student visa and didn't have it with him.... Revenue generation for the small town it is in. Cops aren't allowed to use dirty little words like quotas. However, in small towns like that if officer X doesn't run enough traffic and write enough citations he will see something to the effect of "officer x needs to be more active in his traffic enforcement." appear on his eval. Don't like that crap? Start writing the city manager, city council, city engineer, etc and complain about the obvious speed trap instead of bitching about it on a message board.

Let me add to this that it doesnt surprise me that you dont get pulled over in your bright yellow 1.8T New Beetle with a bunch of tulips in the flower cup holder.

Pulling over someone in that vehicle for 3 over would be kind of a waste. That vehicle indicates the person is a mature, responsible adult who probably has a valid license and current insurance (and an affinity for people of the same gender but that's beside the point). Also, the odds are in favor of that car being totally free of drugs.

Here comes another dirty little word cops can't say- Profiling. Not necessarily racial. However, for the sake of this discussion we will call it "common sense."

What vehicle do you think stands a better chance of having drugs?
1. A new Escalade with deep tinted windows, aftermarket wheels probably worth more than I make in 2 months, an expired 30 day tag, and a thumping stereo?
2. The Beetle you described.

You can answer for yourself. Also notice I did nothing to describe the occupants. "Unknown occupants due to tint"

Who do you think more likely has a suspended license or traffic warrants or no insurance?
1. 1998 Trans Am WS6 with deep tinted windows and a flowmaster exhaust.
2. The Beetle you described.

Same as above. Answer it for yourself, no description on the occupants.

Who do you think is more likely to just need fucked with for being out at 1:30am?
1. The 2001 Civic that has been lowered, repainted, fake carbon fiber hood added, along with some aftermarket wheels and an overpowered stereo.
2. The Beetle you described

No description of occupants again- it is 1:30 in the morning.

Pretty much everyone except those determined to bitch about the cops have probably come to the same conclusion about which car looks more suspicious. Say you are a tax payer in your community. Where do you want your officer's time going?

If I have said it once I have said it a thousand times. traffic stops are not ALWAYS about writing your ass a ticket for 3mph over the limit. The department I work for probably generates more than half of our arrests from things that started out as a simple traffic stop. These can be things as petty as picking someone up on multiple traffic warrants or an invalid license (ok no longer arrestable here) to drug busts into the pounds of marijuana or multiple grams of cocaine. Things our community is glad to see taken off the streets. Traffic enforcement is the simplest form of proactive police work. If you don't like it, stop driving.
Things were better when it was two guys in a dorm room.

rotfl  Yea like that's going to do something. In a country where everyone complains about everything possible don't you think a ton of people haven't already done this? It doesn't help, it is what it is, a revenue generator and no amount of complaining will bring it down.

Quick story, I get pulled over in the same scenario speed limit goes from 40 to 25 all of a sudden. Cop says "I know that the speed limit is unreasonable but I have to sit here and give out tickets for it."  Yeah sure

Spare me, this country has a security/safety obsession. You cant even let the dog off the leash or have a beer outside before someone calls the cops on you.

Not really. My pure distaste for cops starts and ends with Chicago Suburban cops. Ive never had a problem in my life with any State Police, City or Sheriffs office (or any local department here in Florida or anywhere else with the exception of idiot Ormond Beach parking police).

My right to have my opinion, and frankly in my eyes its warranted from my past experience.
