Insane Idea For My Car

Tue Dec 11, 2007 5:21 am

Today my father and I chatted about what I wanted for my birthday and when he asked what I wanted, I told him a real authentic truck steering wheel found on 18 wheelers to replace my current one. As I drive a lot, it is comfort that I seek not looks. As a matter of fact, I could give two cents less about looks. In addition to that, does Alcoa make rims for cars like the dodge caliber I own? If so, i need some of those too. Well, I appreciate all insight on my creative idea for Big D.

Aren't those quite a bit larger than the ones in cars? I don't think they would fit in any car I've ever seen. But of course I haven't seen them all.

And I doubt they'd come with an airbag or at least one you could use and certify...

I bet it already is. A stupid stearing wheel in his rig isn't going to make it any worse.

in trucks, the steering wheel is more horizontal. in a car, it'll touch your knees.
with power steering, a bigger wheel won't make much difference. therefore comfort won't be that much improved. it will maybe even be worse, because your arms are stretched.

the above is a rational answer to your query. my answer would be: wtf?

So, a steering wheel like that will make you LESS comfortable. Chances are, that it will cut into your thighs or knees, and even if it doesn't, it will intrude on the field of vision through the windscreen. The only thing that will improve is, if you have a floor gear-shifter, that it will be really close between the steering wheel and the shifter. But to exploit that, you will have to hold the wheel below center.

But go ahead with it if you feel it would make you happy. You do, after all, live in a free country.

I do not think it is a good idea. Even if you are able to adapt it to your car, it can cause you loss of control and eventually have an accident.

If you want to customize your steering wheel, try MOMO (www.momo.it)

Also, what about the air bag. Last I herd semis don't have airbags, and even if they did it would not be calibrated to your vehicle.

According to their website, no. No rims for any Dodge smaller than a full-size pickup.

I'm not a fan of the Dodge Caliber, but doing something like that to a new car is just ridiculous. And I'm not really sure how you think a big rig steering wheel will make driving your Caliber more comfortable???

Reasons why not to:

1) It probably won't fit/won't leave any room for your knees.

2) It will destroy any possibility of resale.

3) You won't be able to put an airbag in and overall it won't be safe.

4) Chicks won't dig it.

5) It can only make the car worse to drive.

6) You'll look like a complete tool.

How in the world does an 18-wheeler wheel fit inside a car like a Dodge Caliber anyways?

That steering wheel wlll be hitting the windshield not to mention your belly, no man don't do it. Poor car!

This is something you'd see on Beavis and Butthead or the Simpsons. Never thought someone same would do something like this to their car

8) Dodge will use it as a means with which to void your warranty, which on the Caliber you will most likely need.

Short answer, yes.

Air bags are a different issue. They are required at manufacture, but I don't know if they are required one the customer takes delivery. I know its legal to install airbag switches, to turn off the airbag for small children, etc.

One thing about living in British Columbia (I wouldn't say it's good nor bad) but, we don't having anything like TUV so if you want to put a different steering wheel or one of many other possible mods to your car, you don't have to look for a TUV seal or have it approved by TUV.

However, Hunter, having driven an International (which is converted into a bus) for the last year and now driving a Dennis Dart, I can assure you, those steering wheels are not designed for comfort.

My advice, which may just be my preference, but if you don't like your stock steering wheel, go for something that is a bit smaller, thicker and softer. I know that many cars today have rather large, plasticy, thin wheels that make driving a pain. My Honda Accord's wheel was like that and I dreaded it. However, the stock wheels in my Mustang, Passat's, Peugout and now Golf 4 are great wheels.

I agree with many of the above, if you want comfort, go for a nice wheel from manufacturers such as Momo, they offer many varietes, colours that will fit your car, won't affect your warranty and even have airbags.
