Benazir Bhutto Dead

Thu Dec 27, 2007 1:32 pm

According to the Pakistan Interior ministry Benazir Bhutto has been killed in a bomb attack. What next for Pakistan?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/7161489.stm - says she is wounded but the news ticker on the main page said she is dead.

All bets are off for Pakistan - this is just another bad hand everyone saw coming. Not at all surprising given that several people I know who have spent considerable time there don't expect the country as we know it to exist another ten years from now.

Apparently she was shot in the neck and possibly the chest. Others were killed or injured with her. She was to appear rally for her party.
Most probably Musarharif will have to call for another 'emergency rule' situation due to her assassination. One has to also wonder who did this and how it will affect the country. It also takes out the leader of one of and the most powerful opposition party in Pakistan, one of the world's most politically powerful women, the one time head of state of a critical country in the world.
Condolences to her family and to the country.

It's a sad day for poor bleeding Pakistan. We haven't seen that sort of assassination in this country in a while, but those of us who are old enough remember it well and how awful it was.

I'm stunned. This is going to get worse before it gets better.

According to Swedish TV she was shot in the head as she was leaving a political rally, then the assassins blew themselves up, taking another at least 16 people with them. Reports are conflicting as to how she died, as some sources say that the bullets came from the explosive charge, not a firearm. Very sad indeed.

She did offer hope of some stability in Pakistan. I have been watching news reports which show her getting into an SUV minutes before the assasination. I would have imagined that after the attack on her immediately after her arrival and also keeping her high profile in mind, she'd be in a bullet proof car. Reports say that 2 motorcycle borne assassins armed with AK47s fired about 5 shots at her with the fatal shot hitting her neck. After the shooting apparently a suicide bomber came up to her vehicle and blew himself up. She came into hospital with both bullet and bomb splinter wounds and was declared dead. Its unbelievable that a leader of her stature in such a high risk environment would be without a bullet proof car.

I pray that her soul rests in peace. And I wish Pakistan well both for its own sake as well as for the region because there couldn't be a worse situation for India than a destabilized Pakistan.

I predicted she would be assassinated upon her re-entry to Pakistan and I also predicted the delivery method would be a suicide bomber. This is really the last thing Pakistan and indeed the region needed right now. RIP. I'm curious to see where this leaves the country?

Thank you, though she offered no good prospects for the country, that's a fact.

She had evoked probably more curses than anyone else in the country. Just see some last threads regarding Pakistan to see what I mean. From ordinary people to the thugs that his family/party had disagreements with. Really anyone could be responsible. I didn't have to end this way, it could have been better for all, but now that she is gone, and the danger she posed by coming to power taken care of, I pray for her to get thought the difficult time her soul must now be going through. Indeed she has a lot to answer for. Sad day for this family, yet another member dies an unnatural death.
To those not from Pakistan holding her in high regard, I say, you could have had her, would have been better for both her and Pakistan.

I pray for my country, and for all its people. May Pakistan live and prosper..Amen!

$, $$, $$$, $$$$ and more of it. The only exception I can think of is Benazir's niece Fatima Bhutto but then probably not applicable here because she is not in politics. She had been speaking out against her for quite some time without any apparent political reason.

I'm in KHI right now, all I can say that it's a political mess. Traffic jams, riots and the whole lot. A 3 day strike has been announced which means no shops will be open for the next 3 days.

I'm trying to get out tomorrow, a day earlier than my ETD however it's going to be pretty hard getting to the airport given current conditions.

There are dozens of parties (local) in Sindh you'd never have heard of who had scores to settle. Musharraf is just one suspect, these people didn't live a peaceful life. But of course you'd never know that watching CNN etc.

I was hoping for her to be badly defeated at the polls. Now careers will be made on her dead body just as she made hers on her father's body.

Most likely the islamists who loathed her as a secularist and probably even more so as a powerful woman.

Pakistan's secret service is notorious for being infiltrated by islamists, so it is quite possible it had a hand in this as well - either on orders by Musharraf or "freelancing" on their own, but my wild guess would be that they had left the bloody work to the usual young islamists.

A new page has been written in the history of pakistan and this time with Benair Bhutto's blood much like what we saw with her father and brothers. I won't go in too much detail but do agree with everything Bravo45 has posted in this thread, she was a corrupt leader who would have taken Pakistan down hill. Period.

But Bhutto was one of the few people who had the charisma to be a leader, her personality was attractive especially due to the way she carried herself. I personally met her a couple of years ago on a EK flight from LHR to DXB and did tell her how corrupt a leader she was, in return she smiled saying 'we are all entitled to our own opinions young man, but that does not make them right.'

May God bless Pakistan.

This is just so awful, even though she supported the Taliban in 1996, she promised secularism and improved rights for women. Perhaps this was why she was killed.

To me the Tali loving terrorists that infest Pakistan is showing signs of progress and strength, and as we previously discussed on A.net, the thought of Taliban controlling a nuclear powered country is just such a horrible one, that no one can even grasp the prospect of such a scenario.

Now that the future of Pakistan looks worse, than it did before, I can only hope for a quick roundup of Taliban and Al Qaeda scum in that region, or else...

Boaz.
