Bears In Berlin And Nurnberg -Infantile Media

Thu Jan 17, 2008 7:36 pm

Hi guys ,

I think it's very infantile how the German media is reporting about both Icebears in Berlin in Nuernberg .

Infact every hour in N24 they're reporting on what this damn bears are doing .

There are more important things to report in the news than this ..

What do you think ?

Replace "bears" with "Britney Spears" and you'll know what it's like to live in North America.  irked

Well, polar bear cubs look cute - other than many people, I might add.  Wink

Besides I hear it's quite a task to bottle feed the cubs; it happens rarely, and they often die.

If you deem this not important - ignore it.
If more people will do that, media will stop reporting. Easy as that.

"Media" (including news mags) is nothing else than a form of entertainment. They deliver what people will buy. Right now, there is 2 main issues that you can sell: Flocke the polar bear cub, and teenage mobsters beating up elder folks. Neither does it mean that the cub is of any major importance (though in the end this is also a question of how to define importance), nor does it mean that there is significantly more youth violence now than, say, 6 months ago.

Still, a headline reading "Teenagers harass another pensioner" will sell good. That's why every argument between old and young folks will make a potential headline these days. Not saying that youth violence is not a problem, though.

There is no "the media". There is a huge variety of different newspapers, TV channels, websites, radio stations etc. If the station you're watching caters to news that you find irrelevant, then you're watching the wrong station.

rotfl  You would think that wouldn't you!  Wink

I personally thought he was going to be talking about all of the bear statues that are all over Berlin. (My siblings and I had a good time with those. Every one we found we took as perverse a picture as we could involving the bear. hahahaha)

Priceless!

For those who did not follow that story: a mere year ago, a wild brown bear strolling through the Bavarian-Austrian border region was shot in Bavaria, after authorities declared him a "problem bear" (mainly because he dared hunting some farm animals - in other words, acted like any normal bear would).

In that respect, I recently heard a good one from a German comedian: this whole polar bear cub fuss shows how racist this country still is. If you're a bear and you're white, you're adored by everyone. But if you're a bear and you're brown, you cannot even cross the Bavarian border without getting shot right away.

 Big grin  biggrin

When I was in Berlin last summer, the Knut-mania was still very high. Even in the giftshop of the Berlin wall museum, you could buy Knut memorabilia.... but I must admit, that little bear looks oh so cute and cuddly

Like what....bunch of bigwigs having a conference and nbabbling about something they have no clue about, just as long as they are bigwigs, morons like Sigmar Gabriel rambling about CO2, or Mr. Koch about how to handle Turkish kids or Miss Ypsilanti rambling about...well I have so far no idea what she is rambling about, but she does anyway!

Sorry, but I do prefer those cute Bears anytime!
