Why Is Austria So Boring?

Mon Jan 21, 2008 1:46 pm

Why is austria so boring?

We have the swiss, who like to eat triangular chocolate, yodel and make cookoo clocks

Germans, who like to wear laderhosen, munch on bratwurst while swigging litres of beer

French who drive their tanks backwards, eat frogs and snails and stink of garlic

Scots who dress impeccably in kilts, eat haggis, while downing endless drams of whisky, all while behaving like the true civilised human beings they are

even english who like to tie bells to their feet, shake their legs around, cry when their team loses at football, then drink a pint of beer and start fighting with everyone in sight.

But then we have austria - what the hell is a steriotypical austrian? What do they bring to the world? They appear to be nothing more than australian wannabes....

We have the Austrians who like to ski, climb big mountains, yodel (as well as the Swiss), go to the opera then to bed early, and finally who like to eat Wienerschnitzel with Viennese whirls for afters...

And without the Viennese Waltz, we wouldn't have Strictly Ballroom !  Silly

Vienna is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is ranked with Vancouver as top out of 127 world cities for the quality of life.

So, although Austria might appear boring, under that facade I reckon there's a certain smugness, pride and satisfaction.  Smile

I visited Austria in 2006 when me and Dazultra did our little road trip around Europe. Funnily enough Austria was the country we spent least time in, 6 minutes. We literally drove across the border, took a photo of the car, had a quick pee in the snow then returned back to Lichtenstein and on to Zurich.

Right after I took this a guy approached me and asked if I wanted to buy a belt? Weird place.

Austria's fricking awesome!

I went there four times last year and have another 2 trips booked for this year and will probably end up going at least once more ont op of that.

My reason for going is that my gf's family own two very nice ski apartments in Schladming so i go for the awesome snowboarding and the great local beer!

I seem to know the BA staff at SZG by name now! lol

Austria is a small and nice country which you learn to be proud of to be a citizen when you have lived somewhere else like I did.

And btw. once again regarding belts. This is kind of belts I sold/troubleshooted over the phone to/with US-customers.

not this one

which LHRjc and Myt332's parents should have used much more often in the past to get some sense/respect into them.

You know I never get it with these ads - why is it they always show somebody using it who has absolutely no need of using such a device? Instead, perhaps they should picture a really fat, ugly person working out with it, so that when a really fat and ugly person wanders into the store, they recognize the picture on the packaging and realise that perhaps they should not go to the cake counter, and instead should buy your slimming product. I think it would work a treat! Big grin

Not Austrian here, living in this country for 3 years now.

There is in Vienna what you are looking for, only that some of the things don't come to you, you have to go get them. If nightlife and clubbing is what you're looking for, I was surprised to find that clubbing lasts till dawn sometimes even on weekdays, in many clubs and areas. But you only find out if you know people. That's what makes the difference. Spend a week in NY and you'll have a blast. Spend a week in Vienna and unless you have a bunch of austrian youngsters waiting for you, you'll leave with the little diesel cars and the quiet roads as the only impression.
If you're looking for loudness, traffic, color and attitude, you're in the wrong place. All the capitals surrounding Vienna have more of that than Vienna itself (except maybe Vadiz and Geneva!).

Spend an evening at the opera on a Tuseday evening though and it will be sold-out packed. Every venue that plays classical operas, ballets and theaters is full every day of the week or weekend every time i have checked. Amazing. And going to see these classical pieces as opposed to movies is a good habit, to learn something of more cultural value!
Go to any rock concert though, and you'll find with surprise that again tens of thousands headbanging till 6am is the norm. But regarding classical music, Austrians have brought you the valse music rythm and it's dance, as well as a large chunk of the world's classical music compostions through the likes of Mozart Schubert Strauss's Haydn etc etc.

If you're really looking for what more Austria brought you, just look at the field of psychiatry with Freud and Asperger. Then you need not forget that Austria was ruling an empire that stretched all the way to mexico at one point. Ever heard of the holy roman empire?  Wink

Now all that being said, if you want to drive to the nearest airclub, grab an airplane and fly over rivers and mountains all the way to France or Spain, or just hop from one airport to the next while clicking away on your camera, there's nothing like Austria! The thoroughness yet the amazing reachability of it all are great.
Skiing is also a major winter contribution from Austria in the world. The number of stations around the capital at high or low elevations is amazing. Tyrol, and the alps on the other hand, are fascinating for ski or snowboard.

And this Viennese product is not boring (although half-German):

That being said, I'll skip the food gladly though although I enjoy it thoroughly today, I realize again whenever I look at my favorite cuisine in a fine restaurant of other cosmopolitan cities.

I think I have to translate it for our friendly neighbours from up north as well.

A Eitrige = Käsekrainer (Cheese sausage - Krain is a region)
Bugl= Scherzel (Beginn oder Ende) vom Brot (Begin/End of a Bread)
sechzehna= 16. Bezirk (District of Vienna) which is Ottakring (therefore Ottakringer Bier)...now its also called Blech.
