Actually that photo doesn't look that bad, but the view you get when you're on I-95 (I guess it is the other façade), against the industrial backdrop, is just absolutely hideous and gag-worthy. Definitely the worst part of any Boston-NY trip.

I remember back in 1971 when EVERYBODY complained about the Transamerica Pyramid being "out of character" in the San Francisco skyline. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and this building is what identifies the city itself.  Smile

Other than the buildings in Temple Square, downtown Salt Lake is one ugly town. Most of the skyscrapers are quite ugly. Then there's Energy Solutions Arena (home of the Utah Jazz). Somehow the architect thought that adding some windows toward the bottom would prevent the building from looking like a giant concrete box. That didn't work.

There are some extremely ugly condos very near CO's headquarters in Houston. Just a few years ago, right across the interstate, some moron built a row of two (maybe three) story tall condos which look like they have corrugated aluminum siding. There only a few years old, but are really hideous. I'm sure anyone working at 1600 Smith St. knows the ugly little buildings I'm thinking of.

The problem with the FBI HQ is that is a 70's-80's style monstrosity flanked by buildings all built in the 1930's or earlier. It is simply hideous where it is located. Contrast it with the simply beautiful Canadian Embassy down the street - a modern structure that fits in very well, and you have to wonder what the architect was smoking when he/she designed it.

Plus, it's falling apart. Large chucks of the facade have broken off, and yellow tape is everywhere.

The Burj succeeded in resembling a sail, which is does, and representing the "new Dubai." All of it's developments are so recent that a modern look to it is fitting.

This is key in making buildings look ugly. Imagine taking many of the new skyscrapers in China or Dubai and putting them in Chicago or New York. Definitely, they would lose their feel.

Come on, it's not that bad, for Frank Gehry standards at least. Granted the building was poorly designed, leaks when it rains and they have to basically cordon off the area beneath those metal ramps when it snows so people don't get hit in the head with huge chunks of ice but I've seen much worse. It is still better looking than a lot of buildings around MIT and the rest of Cambridge (I actually had a colleague of mine who passed on a great house because of its proximity to a huge grey and red eyesore nearby).

I think MIT is now sueig Gehry because of design flaws such as those that Pyrex is mentioned....Remember the Frank designed prison on "Simpsons"?

Not some stupid spire stuck on top like that thing they're building in New York or those other hideous structures in Dubai.

Well it was either that or have the TV and Radio towers sticking out of the top.

Anybody remember a couple of years ago when the City of Juneau, Alaska sent out RFP's for a new capital building for the state? This got put to bed three years ago, but the designs where something to behold.

Apparently a tribute to the eggs laid by the Alaska legislature. This one the one that actually won the competition.

Looks like two air conditoners stuck on the side of a building, maybe for the hot air emitted by the occupants of that building.

Looks like main temple of some planet Captian Kirk is about to land on and ignore the prime directive on.

And the last, one.....looks like the rehashed that scottish parliment building that was posted earlier. I wonder if it was intended as a tribute to the Turnigan hights subdivision circa March 64?

I and most of the state hated this designs, and didn't think the older 1931 building was that bad.

Correct. Apparently MIT payed Gehry's studio $15 million in fees originally (his usual 10-12% of the price of a building). MIT is also suing the construction company who build it, who defers all blame to Gehry, claiming they warned him of the design flaws in advance (the "I designed it, you engineers are basically just hired help to build it" attitude prevalent in some top-name architects). Still, it is strange how this can happen in one of the top engineering and architecture schools in the world.

I saw a tv show about the John Hancock Building in Chicago. There was a woman who was trying to get it stopped from being built saying it is the ugliest building ever and would ruin the skyline of Chicago. She failed but then went on to be one of the first buyers of a high floor apartment. When asked why she bought into the building she had tried to ban, she said that if she lived in it she would not have to see it everytime she looked out her window.

And to prove it, here's a pic I tookt in 1978:

I was just remarking on how it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the pic of the hotel in North Korea. The architect must have had it in the back of his mind when he designed it.

And, knowing how much you like '70s stuff, here's one from the same folder to make your juices flow, though knowing how much you like the ladies, I certainly don't mean my lean, slender, moustachioed, flared, cuban booted, blow-dried 1970s self, but the cars. I suppose I should have been more specific, but what I really was referring to was the likes of our very own Libery Hall:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y193/Braybuddy/lh.jpg

a truly awful 1960s lump which completely destroys the skyline of Dublin. Thankfully it's going to be demolished soon.

They used to use a lot more glass in US Embasy buildings, but after the bombings of the Embassy's in Africa, they figured out that broken glass causes a hell of a lot of cut injuries.

I think there is a move right now to cut back on the use of glass.

I hate the Gherkin!

I propose the Ministry of Finance building in Paris (by French communist architect Chemetov). To me if looks far worse than La Grande Arche.

The new Bastille Opera House can be part of this thread too.

How about Burj Dubai?

I totally agree that Dubai architecture is ugly. You have to remember that everything in Dubai is built by modern-day slaves imported from Bangladesh and other poor countries. They are treated to awful conditions, innumerable work hours and being paid zilch.

I will have to find a picture of the Millefiori skyscraper in Monte Carlo. That is a hell of an ugly building too. It just ruins the whole place!!

This is the Millefiori  bomb  the building that ruined Monte Carlo (completed in 1969).

There is far too much construction going on but I think this one beats them all.  Angry

This is the old Bata Shoes International office near my house. A couple years a go it was a very cool building. Since then it became run down and now it is being torn down:

I guess that one goes to show how you can ruin anything through neglect...  sarcastic  It should be a preserved landmark, not torn down.
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

Some nice sky scrapers in DXB...

Agreed, that row of skyscrapers in DXB contains some gems actually. Someday everyone will agree on that. And the Burj Dubai is nice too IMO.
