Friday's Other Stupid Thread: Your Favourite Apple

Fri Feb 01, 2008 7:10 pm

No, I'm not talking about these:

I'm talking about these:

As Im munching on an incredibly tasty apple right now, it got me wondering...what's your favourite type of apple?

Mine is Braeburn. Crispy and tangy and crunchy and delicious.

Braeburn is okay when I have to buy apples in a supermarket.
But I prefer to pick my own. This autumn we picked about 60 kilograms of Gala apples and stored them in our basement. A few dozen apples are still left.
One these are consumed, we will go back to the farmer and buy batches of 3 to 5 kilos of the same type (which were stored professionally).

BTW, that farmer has about 15 different sorts of apples available for PYO.

Gala or Braeburn

The message you were about to post is too short and probably not of any higher value to the topic at hand. You should think long and hard before posting a message in this forum and make it detailed and a valuable addition to the topic discussed.

McIntosh or Fuji.

Funny fact:

All McIntosh apples can be traced back to a single tree near Morrisburg, Ontario.

Golden Delicious is an oxymoron!

Royal Gala is tops for me. Red Delicious is a close second. Ambrosia rounds out my top three.

My top three would be

1. Braeburn - nice mix of tart and sweet. Good and juicy too.
2. Granny Smith - Reminds me of Mom's apple pie. We used to have a Granny Smith tree in our backyard and they are the best pie apple there is.
3. Fuji - A nice crisp apple

The commercially available Red Delicious that we all are familiar with is just mediocre. Interesting read on the evolution of the Red Delicious from its original form to its present form here - http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...e/2005/08/04/AR2005080402194.html.

I don't care about the names, but I like sour apples. Like the green one in the first post.

Empire and Rome apples. I miss the apples we would get from Kashmir and Afgahnistan in my youth - fragrant and tasty.

Pacific (or New Zealand) Rose is my number one.
Pink Lady is a close second.
Anything else without "Granny" or "Delicious" in the name is third.

Grapples (pronounced grape-L):

Basically a Fuji apple injected w/ grape flavoring
If you look at this photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/snappilicious/2200367716/, you'll see the tiny holes where the tiny needles poked the apples.

I like Fuji Apples. There is an Orchard in Lapeer County Michigan that sells them for $20 a bushel. That is a lot of apples. They stay fresh in the refrigerator for months.

Excellent choice; also my favourite. Golden Delicious are not golden, and certainly not delicious, and Granny Smith are uninteresting.

Cox are nice, but not always as juicy and satisfying as I'd like them to be.

I tried these for the first time last October when I went up to New hampshire, and my daughter and I went apple-picking. Now, this is one sweet apple!!! Unfortunately, I can't get them in Bermuda. (the apples I buy here are grown for shipping anyway, so they're crap)
