When May Hydrogen Be Cheaper Than Oil?

Mon Feb 04, 2008 5:06 am

I realize that both may continue to rise but figuring they will cross at some point, so relatively when may the price of hydrogen become cheaper than a similar priced barrel of oil?

15-20 years, sooner or later?

ALMOST NEVER.

Once Oil is tangibly running out, yeah, but then it will only be RELATIVELY cheap. The days of $1.00 for 35ish miles of fuel are LONG over, unless MAYBE you count solar electricity, but even then...

If the US Gov't would stop subsidizing oil, it could well be cheaper right now. All you'd have to do is buy a new car.

But then, if they stop subsidizing oil, oil would come back down, so hydrogen would go up (relatively).

At least from the little knowledge I have, that is what would happen.

Hydrogen is not an energy source!

It is only a medium of energy transport (and not a particularly effective one, at that).

Generating hydrogen requires actual sources of energy, including fossil oil as one of them.

OTOH you can generate Hydrogen by electrolysis out of (sweet) water using electric current.
The source of that electricity needs to be looked into.
The use of hydrogen might not be a too economical one (trasporting hydrogen is rather engergy intensive), but once your options have run out and you are generating hydrogen with electricity from renewable sources, things might have to be reviewed.
Visions are for constructing large arrays of solar panels in regions with lots of sunshine (near the equator) and then transport the hydrogen by tanker ship

As the first three years study of hydrogen tanker development, conceptual design of 200,000m3 hydrogen tanker based on the LNG ship technology and some investigations on the insulation and support system for hydrogen tank were carried out by the joint shipyard team in WE-NET program.

I know BMW have a hydrogen powered seven series. However isn't pumping hydrogen into your car a dangerous task?

BMW had to get a robot to pump hydrogen into the car because they deemed it dangerous.

Back in the late 90's, we had a discussion about hydrogen as a power source in my high school chemistry class. My teacher proposed that we create huge solar energy farms in the southern US to create the electricity to generate hydrogen. Then the hydrogen gas can be piped to the rest of the US through existing natural gas pipe networks.
