The Unveiling Of The New Dodge Challenger

Thu Feb 07, 2008 2:47 pm

After doing a Search and discovering this thread was archived/locked: https://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/1807117

The New Dodge Challenger was unveiled at the Philly Auto Show yesterday. I missed this event by 3 days. When I was at the Auto Show last Saturday; this wasn't on display yet.

What this vehicle needs is a Confederate flag on the roof and "01" on the doors.

A $41,000 Dodge? With an automatic transmission?

Looks good. Too bad it will be a typical Mopar POS long before you pay off the $ 41,000 loan.

Very nice looking car. It's gonna turn a lot of heads driving down the street, no question about that.

The first thought that popped into my head when I saw the interior photo. They shouldn't even offer this.

I have to say, it looks good. But it'd look better in black, without those ugly ass wheels.

I'm not quite sure if Dodge is making the right decision by limiting production of these cars. These novelty models (PT Cruiser, New Beetle, etc.) do well their first 1-3 years but take a dump after that. I wonder if they will be able to recoup their investment by selling only 6400 cars the first year.

Yup! Retro is "cool" and sells... but only for a brief period. Assuming they don't botch the launch, like Ford did with the Thunderbird.

It looks good, but it'd be way better off as a manual. I don't think I'd be willing to put down 41K for it either, especially because up here they'll add a hefty delivery fee.

It is only marginally better looking than those things they are building that look as though they passed through a compacter in the design stage. What are they? Magnums ? Those are by far the ugliest things on the road today. Except perhaps.....No, they are the worst.

The reason it's an automatic is because of the demograph they're targeting with these"what is old is new again" cars: Aging baby boomers.

This retro craze in car design is getting ridiculous...

You know there's a problem when the only designs coming from the manufacturers that look sorta good these days are copies of 40 years old designs...

What the hell's so hard with drawing an original nice looking car nowadays?

Why are people so shocked at the $41,000 price tag when this is a MUCH better car than all others in this price range?
Look at the over-priced garbage coming out of German that goes for $41,000.

Er...well, it's personal preference I guess, and a car like this one has a certain appeal, but dynamically and technologically there's just no comparison.

Quoting Francoflier (Reply 16):

People are always nostalgic. As long as its executed well, what's the problem? The new Fiat 500 has absolutely nothing in common with the original except a vaguely similar shape. And it looks absolutely great. A lot of the classic American muscle cars looked and still look absolutely fabulous, but they're pigs to drive simply because they're old and don't stand with modern cars (and how could they?). So if you can have that classic shape in a modern chassis and drivetrain, why not?

It's not as if you don't get any new design. Chris Bungle (ahem, sorry, Bangle) can hardly be accused of conservatism at BMW, Aston Martins are new and unutterably gorgeous, Honda came out with a radical design for the Civic (NOT the US coupe one, the hatchback), some of the Cadillacs are quirky in design if not especially good as cars, The Opel/Vauxhall/Saturn Astra is quite progressive as a design, the Citroen C4 is a real departure in its class.

The Audi TT quattro?
I rented one of those things last year (rental car company ran out of the requested Mercury Grand Marquis and my only choice was the Audi or some minivan).
The acceleration was worse than my old 1987 LeBaron which only had a 2.2turbo and had about as much space as a Ford Pinto. Yet people will spend up to $50,000 for that piece of junk and never complain about the price AND the poor gas milage it gets.

I'm hardly a fan of the TT, but you are completely missing the point if you just look at acceleration. For one thing, there are several engine options, for another the TT is technologically light years ahead of a Mustang or Challenger. That's one of the reasons it's more expensive, because the American cars are just cheap and cheerful bung a big engine in and all will be well concepts.

By all means prefer the American car, it obviously suits you very well, but there's a reason why other countries are surging ahead and American manufacturers are being left behind. It's because your cars are absolute crap, and don't even begin to compete outside their home market. The irony is that US owned products, even if it's Ford Europe, are perfectly good. But for some bizarre reason you prefer your Noah's Ark-era fast-in-a-straight-line-but-sod-all-else concoctions.

Well I could not agree more. My dad even traded his BMW for a Lexus. I would not be surprised if he trades his SC430 for a Challenger. I would like to know who creates for those crazy designs for Toyota, Audi and BMW.

The only car I would buy that is Euro is a Mercedes for their diesel engine.

Back to the car. Kudos to Chrysler/Dodge. A refreshing change from the clunky bloated pimpy looking cars of the past several years and that fugly Pacifica SUV. Maybe the tide is turning and hopefully we'll get away from those ugly fat SUV's and their funky crossover fugly ducklings on wheels.

No problem at all. I find these cars good looking and that is why I don't understand why it's so hard for the manufacturers to come by with good looking designs anymore.

What I mean is: Which car produced nowadays will deserve a remake 40 years from now? I can't really see any, they're all much too bland.

By trying to come up with designs that everybody would like, they're succeeding in making cars nobody likes...
