....had a freakin wisdom tooth out yesterday morning and I ain't sayin' much today besides "More codeine please" but it comes out as "mawph codeeph pweeph".

Had all four removed a few months ago, didn't need any pain killers afterwards. Just couldn't eat anything but ice cream, pudding, yoghurt and cold soup for a few days grumpy

In all seriousness, having your widom teeth pulled is apparently either hit or miss: if you're lucky, no pain or very little. If you're not, it's several days (or even weeks) of excruciating pain...

So did I.....under local anaesthetic. Same as when I have root canal...local anaesthetic. Back to work (as a receptionist)right after.

As was I - but this was back when I was a youngbuck of 19 years old. Not to mention, they were not impacted, so it was a pretty easy job.

Don't worry, it's giving me great confidence for having one of mine out! Apparently it is flat on it's side and they will need to remove some of my jaw bone to get it out, that's going to be just great fun I bet grumpy

I had mine out, under a general anaesthetic, and I think getting over the ga was worse. Didn't feel any pain from where the teeth used to be. I did have a spectacular yellow bruise around one side of my face where someone had to hold me down to remove a (or more) reluctant-to-be-removed tooth.

Well now Cialini, that was about as dumb as Darryl Strawberry. I had all 4 out under local too, because of the shorter recovery time and the fact that I was going to Europe 10 days later. The first 3 came out easy, whereas the last one was what my dentist characterized as one of the most difficult extractions of his career. I still didn't take pain killers for long, because they make me feel like sh!t

I had 3 removed at once, during my discharge dental exam(the Dr. said "why not do it now while its free", so I did.) Local, and 3 days bed rest(had to spend it on the ship---damn it). The other was removed a year earlier due to pain.

Impacted or not? Mine were impacted. Back in the dark ages, I went in for all four under full anaesthetic and eventually woke to find that only two were gone. The gnasher basher and the patient were both at their limit after two had been removed - a hammer and chisel job apparently. So I had another trip for the upper ones - turned out they were not so bad. Not sure but I suspect it could have been wuss.

And the efflux of time may have saved you a portion of the agony too.

Sweet Jesus, no. It was fine where it was but lately has started causing trouble, and I didn't want to be away from home and have a blowup.

The Dragon Lady had a few impacted ones back in the day and it was a freakin nightmare getting her through that.

OK, makes sense...a nice legal high. Reminds me of when I had my daughter; the girl in the bed next to me said 'when they come around at night asking if you need any painkillers, say yes.' I didn't know why until that night.....absolutely wasted, and it made my stay in hospital much more enjoyable....
By necessity my daughter had to be formula-fed, so there was no danger to her either....

Yeah, well nobody ever accused me of being the sharpest knife in the drawer errrrrrrrrr anyway. I had mine out in the military. I came too and started arguing with the Major because I thought for sure he only took two of my teeth out. I gave up the fight right about the time I was going to get into trouble. Wink

Right on. I had to have mine surgically extracted because they were impacted. I took two days of pain killers, then stopped.

I'm going to be going to get mine (I assume all 4) out sometime at the start of the summer. I haven't had a consultation with the dental surgeon yet, but my dentist has said (looking at the X-rays) that it most definitely needs to be done. She says I'll just be under "conscious sedation" which means I'll be awake, but so drugged up I couldn't tell my mother from Adolf Hitler.

I'm not looking forward to it at all, but meh... what has to be done has to be done.

Well, start counting your blessings then. I guess impacted teeth are less common these days with preventive X-rays being taken. But back in the "good old days" the gnasher bashed figured out they MIGHT be impacted by counting and if some were missing, you got a dreadful "Ohhhh wonder where they went?".

What is really great about long-impacted teeth (that is impacted and not noticed for a while) is that they mow down the roots of the ones next to them - as well.

But just cos my mouth pain all those years ago was awful, does not make your mouth any easier to bear. Trouble is, I cannot remember any hints. Except that cloves really do numb the inside of the gob. If you smoked, a couple of kretek cigarettes would be recommended. Other than that, an apple pie with cloves, or just paint clove oil on.

Other than that, think of the more advanced method in the third world, piece of string and a door knob, and someone to shut the door.

I had all four snatched out two Fridays ago. Alls I had was soup and bread for a couple of days.. I don't know why I didn't try yogurt or pudding..

My grandfather was a blue water sailor all his life and a master mariner. He had stories about this stuff, all of which were pretty awful. He also had one tooth which he was rather proud of.

Come to think of it, B, do you remember when you were a kid about knee high and the old folks would be sitting around chatting and grandmother would serve the coffee or tea?

I remember that grandfather and grandmother had a rather nice silver service with a house flag on it in cloisonne. A house flag is the flag of a shipping line. Well, they had one.

It was only years later I learned that grandfather was a deck officer on a ship that got torpedoed by the Squareheads. Before she went down he liberated the silver service.

The advent of better dentistry and especially fluoridation has transformed dental health. In my youth, not too many beyond 60 had their own teeth.

Hope the head is starting to accept its fate. Just as well the nervous system is tuned to start to ignore the pain after a while. Big grin

Happened a couple years ago (2006) during my Christmas Break. Some gift that was. grumpy

I looked like a frikkin' chipmunk for four days because of the swelling, not to mention the codeine I was taking screwed my sleeping patterns up. PLUS...I couldn't have anything remotely solid for at least 4 days. Thank God for my parents stocking up on my favorite: lime Jello!

I guess it was worth it, because they didn't impact at all, and I was (relatively) pain-free for most of the recovery.

What was happening was that I was going to bed at awkward times: I would take a couple codeine around, say 4:30PM, feel drowsy around 6:00PM, then fall asleep. About 10 hours later (4AM) I would wake up, jaw would flare up and I would go take another codeine, then my "day" would begin. The problem with that is, is that I normally don't sleep more than 8 hours a night, and getting up at 4AM has its consequences on your circadian rhythm (especially when the surger was only about 6 days before I had my winter exams).

Nope - I was even younger - I was 13 when I had mine out, under full anesthetic since they had not yet even begun to emerge, to prepare my mouth for my braces. I remember barfing blood on the way home and being completely miserable. My dad got fish and chips from my favourite fish and chip shop for me to eat that night. I think I just looked at him. I was grotesquely swollen for at least a week. It was miserable.

A month later I had to have my appendix out. What a summer! Went to one day of high school - grade 9 - my appendix went that night. Missed the first month of grade 9.

I had mine out at 19, all four at once. Two were impacted, and the other two were crowding. I sat in the chair, had a gas mask put on, remember watching the ceiling spin for about 10 seconds, and then woke up completely dazed and confused.

I bled for three days, used pain killers for five days, and was generally miserable for about a week. My sleep patterns were also messed up, as I slept for a solid day afterwards and then napped alot. For some reason I could not stop bleeding. It would seem to die down, then it would burst again.

What really irks me is that my brother had all four out only two weeks later, and was fine after one day. Little prick...

One benefit was that I milked my misery for everything I could get out of my parents...food primarily, but also movies and control of the TV.

I had commandeered my section of the house AKA the basement suite used for guests.

Nothing says recovering from surgery like drinking coffee, eating mashed potatoes and gravy and watching The Price is Right, when Bob Barker would get pissed off at all of the blue-haired biddies that couldn't spin the Showcase Showdown wheel all the way and got booed by the audience.

That was one of the upsides to recovering. Big grin
