Quoting AirCop (Reply 52): Left due to arthritis, which caused him problems, which even with today's babying of pitchers wouldn't have prevented. |
Actually, this is probably the exact thing that is prevented today.
Quoting AirCop (Reply 52): and besides he left on top, final season 41 starts; with a 27-9 record and an ERA of 1.73. |
This is true, but he left because he was making himself sick with all the cortisone
Quoting AirCop (Reply 52): for some reason it takes a left hander longer to develop |
I think that is a myth that probably exists because of Koufax specifically and perhaps also because Unit wasn't much till he was about 26. Glavine was a beast at 23, Carlton at 21, Santana at 23, Tanana at 21, Zito at 22...
Quoting AirCop (Reply 52):
Meanwhile in Phoenix, with Webb, Haren, and early showing of Randy Johnson pitching in spring training, and if Micah Owings pitches like he did down the stretch could be interesting in the NL West if the D-Backs can get enough offense.

There is talk of making Owings a part-time position player to take advantage of his bat, sort of like a mini-Ruth. Then again, I will take Penny, Lowe, Billingsley, Kuroda and a healthy Schmidt or Loaiza plus Saito/Broxton/Proctor/Seanez any day over the D-backs staff
