Don't break anything jumping off the bandwagon in July.

Nicely done...

Quoting AirCop (Reply 48):
Warren Spahn, Juan Marichal, Sandy Koufax 300 plus innings plus 20 plus wins were nothing for these guys. In 1963 Spahn and Marichal went after each other for 16 innings until Willie Mays ended it with a home run, 1-0.

Exactly.

Which is why baseball salary problems is all screwed up, Hernandez is nothing more than a .500 at best with a ERA in the 4-5 area, and the number of big hits he allows can drive a manager crazy.

I disagree that baseball has salary problems, because they are able to sustain such rates. Even the Twins were able to open the checkbook for Morneau.

Quoting Halls120 (Reply 49):

For Spahn and Marichal, yes. Koufax didn't last all that long by comparison.

Very true. Sandy was really only a star over a 6 year period. If any pitcher of that era could have benefited from some of today's restrictions, it would have been him.

True, but remember he was with the Brooklyn Dodgers at 18/19, for some reason it takes a left hander longer to develop, and besides he left on top, final season 41 starts; with a 27-9 record and an ERA of 1.73. Left due to arthritis, which caused him problems, which even with today's babying of pitchers wouldn't have prevented.

Meanwhile in Phoenix, with Webb, Haren, and early showing of Randy Johnson pitching in spring training, and if Micah Owings pitches like he did down the stretch could be interesting in the NL West if the D-Backs can get enough offense.

Actually, this is probably the exact thing that is prevented today.

This is true, but he left because he was making himself sick with all the cortisone

I think that is a myth that probably exists because of Koufax specifically and perhaps also because Unit wasn't much till he was about 26. Glavine was a beast at 23, Carlton at 21, Santana at 23, Tanana at 21, Zito at 22...

There is talk of making Owings a part-time position player to take advantage of his bat, sort of like a mini-Ruth. Then again, I will take Penny, Lowe, Billingsley, Kuroda and a healthy Schmidt or Loaiza plus Saito/Broxton/Proctor/Seanez any day over the D-backs staff  Wink

Glavine was a great pitcher

I wonder how much better the Kings would have been had Glavine decided to play hockey rather than baseball  scratchchin  ...
