Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!

Time for the 50th running of the Great American Race!! I am bias, but will key in later with my pick. Who do you guys like? I wish the Super Bowl or Nascar was mid-season, but I'm not complaining. Boogity boogity boogity boys, lets go racing!

The only certain pick is from my buddy, ANCflyer!  yes

ANC is going for Smoke obviously, whose chances I like.

As for me, I'm a well known Kasey Kahne fan, and have a cold 12 pack of Bud sitting next to my TV.

I think the best best would be on one of the 3 Hendrick cars for this event but who knows, the Big One can be the great equalizer in this race. I'm looking forward to an afternoon of great racing regardless.

3?

All Hendrick Cars are threats...

#48 on Pole
#88 3rd
#24 8th
#25 9th

All these drivers have a chance of winning as cause they drive Hendrick Power!  yes

Would love to see #24 win but #88 will do just fine! Big grin

champagne  This is for FXramper and MEM Ops letting him off and flying him in from ATL... Thanks FX for bring my brother home and thanks to QF and AA for getting myself & wifey in on time from MEL/LAXBig grin

Mears' car is now the # 5 that Kyle Busch drove last year.

I think it's going to be a wild race... the COT makes for some pretty good racing on the plate tracks, at least. Giving them some extra power hasn't hurt, though.

Also, for those with DirecTV: The NASCAR HotPass is free on channels 790-794 for the Daytona 500

Johnny Sauter is down in the Nationwide Series for now, so it doesn't really matter to me who wins, but I usually root for the underdogs. I think this is Junior's year though, so that's my guess for the championship.

I'm not putting Mears in the same class as the other 3. I could be wrong though. But I'd have Jr., Johnson and Gordon as favorites for pretty much any race this season.

I agree. Still over 40 minutes until Green. That's the only gripe I have with NASCAR broadcasts, their pre-race gets very tedious sometimes.

True, but it's been my favorite energy drink before Junior announced his '08 sponsor. I'm not a diehard Junior fan either, but as you say, it's amazing how loyal people are to their drivers (tattoos, painting their car, their wardrobe, etc.).

I'd much rather shop at Lowes . . . we don't have one in ENA however . . . so Home Depot it is, until next spring when a Lowe's will open here.

Maybe it's just me then. I certainly won't be inking a #9 on my arm any time soon though, the jackets and hats yes. Did you see in the pre-race where they were asking Dale Jr. questions and one guy asked what he was supposed to do with the #8 tattooed on his arm? I was mildly amused.

There is a limit of course to anything - the last thing that would cross my mind is getting an Orange #20 permanently (more or less) attached to my skin . . . just doesn't make sense to me . . .

Remember, Smoke used to drive a Pontiac . . . I hate two seat cushion for stadium use, both are Pontiac #20 Racing. Then, well - they went to Chevys. Now of course, it's a Toyota . . . so . . . never mind brand loyalty because someone "drives" that car/sponsor/color . . .

1/4 of the way into the race and Shrub is in the lead with Hamlin, Gordon, Junior, and the rest of the pack behind him. Hornish Jr has probably been the most impressive rookie so far, however, he's in 41st at the moment...

That high line always comes in later in the race...it worked for Harvick last year, and it worked for Newman tonight. Disappointed for Smoke, but very happy with Newman finally getting back into Victory Lane.

Btw, the pre-races have always been long...it's just nowadays the networks televise them in their entirety. Used to be the show would start with the "start your engines" call.

Good job Newman and Busch!

Here's my awards for the race:

Winner: Ryan Newman

Best Car: Kyle Busch (4th)

Best Team: Penske (1st,2nd,15th)

You'll get 'em next week: Tony Stewart (3rd)

Rookie: Sam Hornish Jr. (15th)

Whoa! He made the top 5? : Reed Sorenson (5th)

Whoa! He made the top 10? : Robby Gordon (8th)

Did the announcers even mention his name?? : Bobby Labonte (11th)

Heartbreak: Casey Mears (35th)

Best Charge: Kurt Busch (43rd ---> 2nd)

Best Non-Top 35 Driver: Brian Vickers (12th)

I just came up with the "award" thing right now, so if you guys like it, I could continue it, or if you detest it, I won't do it again. Oh, and if you don't agree with the winners of the awards, it's just my opinion, so please don't flame me. :|

It seems longer now because they start the race at 3:45PM instead of 1PM like it was for the first 45 years or so... (and I wish they still did)

Congrats to Ryan Newman and Penske Racing, they came through when it counted the most. And a little redemption for Kurt Busch helping his teammate beat Tony Stewart.

Not in Daytona Beach over the weekend. Didn't want to deal with the worst of it. I flew home Friday night and am flying back into town tomorrow night.  Smile I didn't have to work race weekend this year and didn't have tickets for the race either so I bugged out of town.

I did meet up with NASCARAirForce last year over the 500 weekend to do some spotting of all the Biz Jets coming in though. Weather would have been much nicer for spotting this year than last.  wink

Overall an exciting race. Clearly I'm happy that Kasey Kahne made the top 10. But another thing that makes me happy is that there were 5 Dodge's in the top 10, when last year we didn't see many Dodge's up top. Hopefully this bodes well for GEM and other Dodge teams, certainly it does for Penske.

Too bad for Smoke, Busch got the last laugh today, but throughout the season it'll be Smoke whose got more wins I'm sure, couldn't have been easy to swallow given the events of the past week.

Considering that I've been a DW fan back since he was driving the #11 Mountain Dew Buick...back in the days when it wasn't cool to be a DW fan, I can overlook the fact that he's not a great analyst.

What upset me a bit today was that most races we'll turn down the TV sound, and turn up the MRN/PRN radio broadcast...but the local radio station appears to have dropped its NASCAR coverage.

Like hell. Not one wreck for the first half of the race. And no "Big One"

I think that safety features, such as the body harnesses, and the flaps which prevent the cars from flipping (they used to flip all the time - you never see that anymore) have been remarkably successful. And now you have the new CoT car which appears to be far more stable.

This means that we can get rid of the restrictor plates. Let the speeds come up, and make for an exciting race again. This was the first Daytona where I was fighting off sleep (although the last 15 laps were pretty good)

Moose135, re DW's wins: what not too many people realize, or would admit (because it'd pretty much be blasphemy) is that Richard Petty's team cheated their way to his 199th win, which I believe was at Charlotte. IIRC NASCAR determined that the engine in his car was too big, but didn't dock the win (as they had been in the practice of doing). DW was second that day.

Allison was the arch-enemy in those days, he and DW had their rivalry going, esp in the early 80's.

And yes, the restrictor plates need to go.

I turned on my TV this morning and I saw they were racing NASCAR, i'm sorry, but from a viewers point of view, this bored me to death. All you do is race on an oval, there doesn't look to be much skill involved, you just put pedal to the metal all the way around. A proper race is with V8 Supercars or Formula 1.

I'm going to get flamed now..  duck

F1, that's that silly european thingy where they have the winning order established after about ten laps, right? You're right, that's soooo much more exciting. Not.

At least in NASCAR, there are exciting finishes where anything can happen, even on the last lap. Especially on the last lap.
Not much skill required.........pul-lease. Do we have to have this debate every year? How many former open wheel guys are racing in NASCAR now, and aren't they all saying its much more competitive?

I think JP said when he made his NASCAR debut last year that he was really impressed with the competition in NASCAR. And open wheel racer's really seem to be making a push for NASCAR in recent years, Patrick Carpantier, Juan Pablo Montoya, Jacques Villenuve, Hornish and Franchetti to name a few.

I'm not going to berate F1, and it's better now that Schumacher is gone (any time he raced it was a pretty good bet he'd be 1 or 2), but I agree with you, there's not as much excitement for me at least. Is the technology better, yes, but as far as excitement and having no idea who is going to win each week, I'd take NASCAR over F1 any day.

I think that most people's gripe with NASCAR is that it's predominately left turns, but there's so much more to it than that.

There is no "proper" auto race. NASCAR, F1, V8, Rolex, they all have their own style which makes each series unique.

Well said, and I wasn't dogging F1 in my first post, just poking back at someone to stir the pot. F1 is intersting to watch, but I just don't get the same spark.

I can understand how you find it boring but to say it doesn't look like there's not much skill involved shows ignorance on your part. It is like golf or any sport. Some will find it boring but to say you can't the skill involved is just blind.
I personally enjoy F1 more than anything else, but NASCAR requires its own unique skills.

Sitting inside a car that can reach 210 mph, and the temperature inside the car can reach 130 degrees F with a helmet and drivers suit on, AND trying to hold it in for 500 miles!?! Now that's just the fatigue stuff, the reflexes and other skills are a whole different ball game.

You left out"going 210 mph six inches off another car's bumper" and trying to dodge 41 other cars.  wink

It may be little off topic but is anyone else sick and tired of hearing the waltrip brothers? It is barely the first race and I already can't wait till they switch to ESPN.

Good race overall, like to see some new faces at victory lane then the same old dominating drivers, although I am a Jeff Gordon fan.

Oh yeah, forgot about that! Big grin It's amazing that they don't wreck more often. When I play NACAR 08 for PS2, and I'm racing at Daytona or Talledega, I usually slip up and wreck someone 1-3 times a race. (The damage doesn't slow the car down in the game  Sad )

I can still hear DW's voice in my head from yesterday... Big grin

The surprise of the 500? How about Sam Hornish? He was in the top 5 for a while, right up there with the Gibbs & HMS cars. Impressive!

NASCAR's open wheel refugee class of 2008 has its first washout. Jacques Villeneuve has already been "released" by BDR & is expected to announce he's going to focus on the 24 Hours of Le Mans & maybe run the Busch (I'm still calling it that) race at Montreal.

AllegiantAir--
Just a couple of notes from your awards...

Quoting AllegiantAir (Reply 30):
Best Non-Top 35 Driver: Brian Vickers (12th)

Actually that would go to Kurt Busch, technically, as Sam Hornish has the 2 car points for the first 5 races this year.

Quoting AllegiantAir (Reply 30):
Whoa! He made the top 5? : Reed Sorenson (5th)

Out of the top 5 drivers, Reed would be the unlikely one, however he really had a strong SpeedWeeks and was consistently running in the top 10 in all races he was in. Think he's a great bet to get his first win this year.

Quoting Duff44 (Reply 31):
It seems longer now because they start the race at 3:45PM instead of 1PM like it was for the first 45 years or so... (and I wish they still did)

Duff44-They used to start the race around 12:15pm eastern time before the lights were installed. CBS would come on the air, you'd have about 10-15 minutes of pre-race interviews, the invocation by the Rev. Hal Marchman and then the race would get underway. The Gatorade Twin 125s (now the Duels at 150 miles) would also start earlier in the day and the second race from time to time would finish awfully close to dusk.

Good race overall and I'm still waiting to see where the debris was in that first yellow flag period...
