That explanation makes the most sense too. Most refinery explosions are the result of carelessness, in which a very small leak can lead to big consequences. BP Texas City and their damn Blowdown Stacks.

Quite a coincidence for me. Just before lunch I was reading the BP and CSB reports of that accident. I was hard to believe that blowdown stacks were still allowed at the time of that tragedy. I assume (!) everything that is vented goes to flare now?

The refinery is just off I-20 on the east side of Big Spring. We passed by it on our never-ending west coast road trip last summer, and I happened to shoot a picture as we drove by.

The relationship of the refinery to I-20 can be seen in the aerial photo from the Big Spring, TX newspaper:

Doesn't look like anyone around here's too concerned any more, but just in case.....from today's Big Spring Herald:
http://www.bigspringherald.com/content/view/110193/60

"An Alon employee, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said Monday the cause of the explosion was a propylene tank leak that could not be stopped, causing a mist-like vapor to gather in the refinery. According to the witness, the vapor got into a cracker heater and an alkaline unit, causing both to explode simultaneously."

I'm interested. Thanks for posting. Sorry for the people who were injured, particularly the passing motorist on the Interstate.
