It occurred to me, looking at my map, that I have never been south of the equator! I am going to have to fix that!

I thought I hadn't... until I found out 20 years after I'd been there that RAF Gan, in the Maldives, was just south of the equator. D'oh!

Edit: Forgot to add Turkey to the map.

Leaving out countries I've transferred through, but not actually entered, the list would be:

Canada
United States
Mexico
Cuba
Guatemala
Argentina
Chile
Brazil
Peru
Uruguay
Venezuela
Egypt
Kenya
Lesotho
Morocco
South Africa
Austria
Belgium
Bulgaria
Croatia
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Liechtenstein
Macedonia
Monaco
Netherlands
Norway
Poland
Portugal
Russia
San Marino
Slovakia
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
United Kingdom
Vatican City
Bahrain
Israel
Turkey
Cambodia
China
India
Indonesia
Japan
Philippines
Singapore
Sri Lanka
Thailand
Vietnam
Australia
Fiji
French Polynesia
New Zealand

And every single one for pure pleasure: life's been good!

There haven't been any five star hotels, unfortunately, but there have been nice ones, dumps, buses, trains, boats, cars, camper vans, tents, beaches, hammocks, brothels (unintentionally), private houses masquerading as hotels, friends, strangers and probably every other sort of accommodation you can think of. The most fun trips have been the least planned. For longer trips with friends we'll usually pick a destination and a departure airport, then make our way from one to the other, making it up as we go along. Package deals are fine and I've done my share of them, but it's a great feeling waking up in the morning and heading off by bus, train or car not knowing where you're going to stay that night.

And amazingly, in 36 years and hundreds of trips there's only been one flight emergency, one close-shave on the road, one minor and three attempted robberies and one successful scam (I hope I'm not speaking too soon here). And while there have been some dodgy hotels, I've never had any trouble with any of them. And no matter where you go, people are only too willing to help you out if you're in trouble. Says a lot about the basic decency of people the world over, I suppose.

Outside of outright dangerous places, there isn't a place on the planet I wouldn't visit, given the chance. And it would be very, very difficult to pick a favourite. Almost everywhere has its good points, although some have much more than others, of course. But, if I were to pick a favourite I think Latin America would shade it. It has everything. And it's great fun.

China (lived in Shanghai and Canton for a bit)

Macau (during Portuguese control)

Cambodia
Thailand
Japan

Oceania:

USA (currently lives in CA)
Canada
Mexico

US
Canada
Mexico
Belize
Jamaica
Turks & Caicos*
Cayman Islands*
Australia
United Kingdom
Germany
France
Italy
Spain

hope to add either Hong Kong or Peru to the list in 2008, and New Zealand in 2009

* - yes, technically British Overseas Territories, not countries, but I count them anyway.
Have also visited two of my country's self-governing territories, PR and USVI.

Was also technically in the Dominican Republic for a day, but it was on a cruise line's private island - no real contact with the country itself, so I don't count that
