Video Of Dutch Pache In Action Stirs Commotion

Thu Mar 06, 2008 11:38 am

A leaked video of a Dutch Apache helicopter giving air support to US ground combat troop in the south of Afghanistan has stirred a lot of commotion in The Netherlands.

The Dutch secretary of Defence has said he's bothered by the leaking of the video, because it shows Dutch troops to be actively involved in front line fighting, whereas left wing opposition parties are talking about war games being plaid by Dutch soldiers in a war aimed at protecting US interests.

I thought it was generally known that the Dutch were engaged in front line battles in Afghanistan?

So, let me get this straight: they spend God knows how many millions on helicopters which are sent to a war zone ... and people are surprised that they're used in combat?

And from a country which is one of the most liberal on earth, fighting people who are probably as illiberal as it's possible to be, I thought the public would be pretty happy to see Dutch AH-64s firing into Taliban positions?

NATO provides security forces in Afghanistan. Aren't the Dutch in NATO?

remind them on our behalf our fighting the Germans to protect Dutch interests (far more than US interests anyway).

Remind them also what the meaning of "allies" is.

I don't suppose you recently checked just how large a proportion of our armed forces are on deployment to hot-spots around the world including the worse parts of Afghanistan? Putting allies in brackets (I think that's what they are called) is hardly supportive of the work our forces do. We are usually one of the first to go in, and one of the first to go out.

Where's that "not that shit again" picture when you need it!

We get it, you brave dudes fought a war 60 years ago, all alone, with absolutely no help of any other country at all, you went in and liberated us and we now still have to pay for it, OK OK... thank you, we love you, we want to lick clean your boots and will never ever in not a hundred million years question any of your actions what so ever and you may remind us at any given moment, no matter if it's appropriate or not, of that great sacrifice you guys made.

Apologies for that to the rest of you, but sometimes it gets on my nerves a bit. Especially coming from people whose views on history are most likely largely defined by what Hollywood made of it.

Anyway, back to the topic...

Actually, the Dutch have it pretty rough in Afghanistan! The Norweigans refused a NATO order to move from Southern Afghanistan because their troops lacked combat training and combat equipment!

What are the Dutch supposed to be doing in Afghanistan? Planting tulips for peace? Silly

You miss the point. Allies help each other, even if it is not in their direct interest to do so. And I would further point out that it is indeed in Holland's interest, as Holland, in spite of being one of the most immigrant-friendly and welcoming societies in the world, has suffered from Islamic extremism itself, to the point that the right of free speech is now in jeopardy in that country.

Holland should be proud of what it is doing in Afghanistan - fighting against the same ideology that is threatening their freedoms at home.
