Tell Me This Technology Won't Be Used For...

Tell me this technology won't be used eventually for domestic surveillance purposes...

It's a DARPA Project called "Combat Zones That See", which is claimed to be able to maintain total surveillance over a combat-zone to protect american troops. As part of DARPA's requirements, it is to be done with off-the-shelf electronic equipment and such. Of course one doesn't have to read far into either of these links to realize that this technology could easily be used for the purpose of domestic-surveillance that almost anybody would call Orwellian.

To make it worse, much of the technology already exists (cameras in major cities and such). This is not ficticious, sadly, in any way -- this is real. Even defense-experts have stated that they felt the technology had a purpose more suited to domestic-surveillance and law-enforcement than defending battlefields...

I hope so. Look at London's surveilance system. While such systems don't have a good record of detering crime, they often make it much easier to catch suspects.

So tell me Andrea, should we stop developing surveillance tools and technology because they can be used in domestic situations for which there is no warrant? By that logic phone tapping technology should have never been developed. How about cameras? Recorders? Satellites? Binoculars? Telescopes? ETC.

Please. Stop being paranoid. Just because a technology exists, doesn't mean it's being used for nefarious purposes. There are adequate checks and balances in place to discourage casual, illegal usage and sanctions for those caught using them illegally.

And for the record, I believe the program that the administration is using is perfectly legal. This is a war. Once we all, the civilized world, understands that, the sooner the enemy can be shut down.

I am contemplating having radical cosmetic plastic surgery. My picture has been taken numerous times over many years and is doubtlessly in uncountable numbers of databases around the world. When this new imaging technology is mated to facial recognition technology it will be an easy matter for the government to bastardize it and track my every movement.

After I have had my surgery, I will not allow my face to be photographed unless I have applied special effects makeup or applied adornments such as shaped eyeglasses or jaw inserts. When I go out in public (and around my house when my webcam is on) I will wear special effects makeup in random patterns so that they will not be able to put together a pattern of my movements.

We cannot allow the government to pattern us and control our lives with the information they are attempting to gather.

At what cost? At the cost of eroding every last aspect of privacy and freedom us American's possess? You realize that if the government is allowed to reach the point where it can freely spy on the public without warrant, can disregard our civil-liberties as it sees fit, it will become more dangerous than the terrorists it's supposed to protect us from?

Ever read about Josef Stalin and the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany? They didn't have the technology to literally track every single human that moved in a city even. And they caused immense suffering and misery.

It's a lose/lose situation unless we figure out a way to defeat the enemy without trampling over everybody's rights.
