Honorable Professions

Fri Mar 07, 2008 1:02 pm

Let's do a poll:

How do you rank various professions in terms of honorability and respectability? To keep this simple, a simple 1 to 10 rating, 1 being on par with a criminal, 10 being best. You can take anything into account, but basically how much respect to you feel for someone just based on what they do.

Police Officer -
Corporate Lawyer -
Criminal Lawyer -
Surgeon -
Accountant -
Engineer -
Politician -
Soldier -
Teacher -
Marketing -
Journalist -

We'll do an averaging later on. Here's my input:

Police Officer - 9
Corporate Lawyer - 3
Criminal Lawyer - 2
Surgeon - 8
Accountant - 5
Engineer - 7
Politician - 1
Soldier - 10
Teacher - 7
Marketing - 4
Journalist - 2

I noticed you have left Sales out of this list.
Is this because you do not consider it a profession?

Quoting Dreadnought (Thread starter):
Teacher - 7

My sister teaches reading and she recently got teacher of the year. She gets the kids who have the lowest reading levels and by the end of the year they are reading at higher levels. I am proud of her and help her grade papers whenever I can.

Quoting Kmh1956 (Reply 1):
Police Officer - 10

I know several they attest it is a dedication and it is not about money. My friend who works traffic says he likes the friendly community interaction he gets on his patrols. I have been considering that profession but think truck driving is more along my lines.

I couldn't include every profession, and the list was rather off the top of my head. As for your question - interesting. Having done it myself (or rather I TRIED to do it), I see it as more of a natural ability than a learned profession.

Just about every profession has honor of some sort associated with it . . .

However, in keeping with the sentiments of this thread I'll make my entry . . .

Police Officer - 10
Corporate Lawyer - 1
Criminal Lawyer - 0 (Defense) 8 (Prosecution) - there IS a difference.
Surgeon - 8
Accountant - 2
Engineer - 5
Politician - 1
Soldier -10
Teacher - 10
Marketing - 4
Journalist - 3
Nurse - 10
Firefighter - 10

I find it awesome that most ranked the "soldier" as #1 if not sure as hell close to it. It is beyond true through experience, that the soldier recieves so much more honors than any other profession. I recieved more "Thank yous" and handshakes, and questions, etc than most lawyers, police, LAWYERS, surgeons, ... simply while walking down the streets of Toronto . I think the Soldier stands out more than a Lawyer or a Surgeon, teacher, etc

Police Officer - 7
Corporate Lawyer - 0
Criminal Lawyer - 0 (Defense) 0 (Prosecution) - there IS a difference.
Surgeon - 9
Accountant - 0
Engineer - 5
Politician - 5
Soldier -10
Teacher - 10 (ONLY IF THEY ARE BORN TO DO IT)
Marketing - 10
Journalist -0
Nurse - 7
Firefighter - 10

Police Officer - 10
Corporate Lawyer - tbh this depends on the issue - If a lawyer is representing someone over hot coffee spillage then 0 - but if someone were to fall at work on the fault of the employer and become paralysed I think the lawyer would be a 5.
Criminal Lawyer - Defense - 0 - Prosecution-4
Surgeon - 9
Accountant - 4
Engineer - 8
Politician - 3
Soldier - 10
Teacher - 8/9
Marketing - 7

Oh please. The notion that FA's can do no wrong and are the glue that hold our society together is pure crap. What's "honorable" about being a FA? Yes they have a safety related role in the operation of aircraft but it's no more important than a teacher, a doctor, a school bus driver, or a day care provider.

I find it rather disturbing that so many people are giving criminal defense lawyers a ranking of zero. I'm sure the good folks working with the Innocence Project would just love to hear that you consider them as moral as criminals.

It depends on how much communication you have with your customers. If you provide answers to their questions in a prompt and efficient manner and provide updates as required. I would think that would be honourable.

Police Officer - 10
Corporate Lawyer - 7 - These are not the ambulance chasers, they defend against the ambulance chasers.
Criminal Lawyer - 4 (Defense, they serve a very real and important purpose) 7 (Prosecution)
Ambulance Chaser (Trial lawyer) - (1)
Surgeon - 8
General Practitioner - 10
Accountant - 7 (I started with a 5, but my wife is a CPA and really, they serve an important need in society, and at home)
Engineer - 8
Politician - 5
Soldier -10
Teacher - 10
Journalist - 3 (8, if you can find me an objective one that doesn't color his/her reporting with editorializing)
Nurse - 8
Firefighter/EMS (face it, in most communities, they are one in the same) - 9
Sports star - 6
Movie/TV/Stage types - 4
Artists - 2, get a real job

The list, is of course, not all inclusive, nor do I want to over generalize, but a list such as this really does force this. I have met scumbag firefighters and cops and I do know a trial lawyer whom I feel is quite a bit above the masses.

Like the old saying: If you can read, thank a teacher, if you can read in English, thank a soldier!

That made me laugh but it's true.

I'll add Used Car salesmen as -7

Negative 7? That's because you haven't had the chance to buy a used car from me.  Wink

And what about Pilots? Nobody mentioned them, but we're, after all, on an aviation website!  Confused

Disclaimer: I do not judge people by their profession, with 2 exceptions, of which later. But in an abstract, philosophical sense, here goes:

Police Officer - 9
Corporate Lawyer - 2
Criminal Lawyer - 3
Surgeon - 10
Accountant - 5
Engineer - 10
Politician - 1
Soldier - 1
Teacher - 10
Marketing - 2
Journalist - 4

Some more:

Priest, televangelist, mullah - 1
Relief worker, Peace Corps volunteer - 10

Two professions are IMO beyond contempt, and I will never associate with anyone working as:

1. Executioner/torturer
2. Muttawa (Saudi religious policeman)

Thankfully, none of those vermin live within 2,000 miles from my home anyway.
