Dear Spanish Friends, I Envy You

Sun Mar 09, 2008 7:15 pm

You are a good country, well governed, and now with these elections, if results confirm the polls, you'll continue on your modernization journey.
Freedom for catholic and even for atheist, and good economic policy, PACS and good life.

A dream for us Italians.

I have to say that even the other man is better then Italian best politician, so I really envy you. You are growing and we are going in a grave. Good luck.

I agree - Spain is my favorite country, for the above reasons and more...

Huh? How's that exceptional? Don't tell me atheism is illegal in Italy?...  Confused

Nah, come on. Granted Italy has a disturbing amount of pricks in its government... Eppur, si muove! There's still enough of good stuff in Italy to make me seriously consider moving there one day.  Smile

Well Zapatero seems to have won a second term in governement, with his socialist party, the PSOE, falling just short of winning the majority. Must say I'm delighted. Not that he's the best politician around, but I could not have stuck seeing that Rajoy (leader of main opposition party the right-wing PP) governing, and to be honest the final 4 years of Aznar before Zapatero was elected in the last general elections have put me of the PP for quite some time I think.

He has a lot to do though, and I think this second term will be tougher for him. I don't know where F.Piper got his impression that the Spanish eceonomy is in a robust state, as all news/financial sources are pointing out the major economic slowdown hitting Spain which is expected to get much worse unless something radical is done. Spent the weekend in Madrid, and I must say morale about life in Spain and the Spanish enonomy was the lowest I've seen in a long time amongst my Spanish friends.

I think many foreigners who go to the Costas (or elsewhere in Spain) on holidays, which are great places for holidays, get a very false image of the reality of life in Spain. I lived there for 10 years, and visit it frequently as my wife is Spanish, and sadly the economy, while it has improved to a massive extent over the past 30 years, is not as great as many think. Many Spaniards still have to get through each month on ridiculously low salaries.

Anyway I wish all the best to Spain over the coming 4 years of Zapatero, as Spain is undoubtedly a great country and teh Spaniards are wornderful people.
Long live Aer Lingus!

And gay marriage, don't forget! What freaked me out was seeing tv-news reports where the Catholic Church in Spain were telling people to vote to save the Spanish values and morals, ie. vote for someone who wants to abolish same-sex marriage.

Suppose it just sucks to be them right now, with gays marriyng left and right, corrupting the entire Spanish way of life...

Cheers

Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.
