What Makes You Typical For Your Nationality?

Tue Mar 11, 2008 1:35 am

Hey,

what makes you a Brit / Italian / Frenchman / Russian / American / Japanese or whichever applies to you? What characteristics usually attributed to your nationality do you share? Or are you entirely atypical?

I'm German because I

- proudly sport socks in sandals on a daily basis

- secretly believe Lufthansa to be the world's best airline but would never say so

- consider beer my primary source of nutrition

- spend considerable time to pontificate and lecture people about what's right and wrong in the world

- hate meeting other Germans abroad and hate even more when they recognize me as German

- deny any national pride yet wave the flag like a loon whenever football provides an excuse

 Smile

What about you? Are you the Ugly American, the Frog-eating Frenchman, the Libidinous Swede, the Conservative Japanese, the Silent Russian? Or are you a breed of your own? Let's hear it!

I am a patriotic, country music loving, conservative, gun owning, fatty food eating, red blooded American. And I am proud as hell.

I'm American because I...

-Didn't own a passport until I was 23 years old.

-Would rather see all of what my country has to offer before visiting foreign lands. (Unless those foreign lands border the Caribbean Sea.)  Wink

-Drive a vehicle that probably has worse fuel consumption than any fully-loaded European vehicle operated full-time in first gear.

-Don't give too much thought to energy efficiency, unless I can save in the wallet. And even then, it's a hard sell...I probably won't like what I'm getting for it.

-Would break any Ikea bed after only a little normal use...And I'm considered "normal" by American standards. (One little screw holding up each side of the frame to the headboard...what were they thinking??)

-Feel the same way about Ikea chairs.

-Think Ikea is an invasion, and they need to take their rickety shit back from where they came.  Big grin

- I love & hate Finnair
- I like beer
- I am pragmatic
- I need a lot of personal space
- Patriotic but not nationalistic, flags are for special occasions only
- I look rather typical Finnish

As a New Zealander I
-have lived in London working on my OE
-travelled overseas before I visited the South Island of New Zealand.
-don't trust politicians to do anything for me
-self righteously believe the world is falling apart, except NZ.
-Love sitting on the Eden park terraces drinking beer while watching the cricket

I'm American because I:

  • love baseball

  • am friendly and immediately welcoming to people I just met

  • think of towns two hours away as part of my local area

  • Identify with a second nationality due to my heritage

  • have a choice of 30-125 different beers in each bar

  • can turn right on red

I was born in Bulgaria in 86, one month before Chernobyl  Smile

I am extremely proud of my country
I am extremely proud to be an American citizen.

You know you are Bulgarian when...

You don't want to have or do any business with Bulgarians.

When you make jokes based on your own tragedy.

At your wedding you know only about a third of the guests.

Your father calls you a dummy for not knowing how to do something he can't do either.

There is more alcohol in your liquor cabinet than at the local bar.

You can hear your dad snoring from across the street.

Both your parents had to walk to school barefoot in the snow, 5 km uphill - both ways - and over rocks and they make sure to remind you every time you get in your car.

Everyone is sure you're Greek or Italian.

As soon as you tell a neighbor you're Bulgarian they usually scream STOICKOV with a weird accent

and so many more..

Or are you entirely atypical?

Yup! I'm Toast, and nothing but Toast, because:

- I pledge allegiance to no country
- I abhor patriotism
- I have never felt I "belonged" to any particular society
- I have no religion
- I have only lived a few years in my country of birth
- I am fluent in several languages but not in my "native" one
- Nothing in my looks or behavior betrays my origins
- Nobody has ever correctly guessed my nationality
- Whenever asked, I call myself "citizen of the world" even though this annoys people
- I have never sought contact with expats from "my" country
- I have never felt homesick and am determined never to live in "my" country again
- I will drop my citizenship the second it's legally possible.

There you go... I hope the world will eventually grow out of this "nation" BS...

But even if that happens, maybe 5000 years from now, I bet the descendants of today's Germans will still be wearing socks with their sandals...  duck

- Proud and patriotic

I'm Italian because...

- I think that things such as pizza with pineapple or pasta with ketchup aren't even proper food, in fact I'd ban them if I could
- Starbucks fits in the above category, i.e. an aberration
- To me, coffee (espresso) is a religion, and there are about 100 different ways to prepare it
- I cringe when I see people cutting their spaghetti or eating them with a spoon
- Being 5 to 15 minutes late is more than OK
- An espresso and a croissant constitute the perfect breakfast
- I find it very hard to talk whilst keeping my hands in my pockets
- Drinking a glass of wine or two with your meal is healthy and does not automatically make you an alcoholic
- I've been drinking since I was 15
- I like to dress well
- I've been all over Europe but there are plenty of places in Italy I've never been to
- When I was in high school, writing your own excuses for missing a day of school was standard practice

I'm an atypical Italian because...

- I know that my friends will be late whenever we meet, yet I always turn up on time (or about 5-10 minutes late, which is still early anyway)
- I couldn't care less about soccer
- I dislike meeting other Italians abroad and being recognized as Italian
- I hardly ever get a tan in the summer
- In the winter, I don't complain about the cold weather all the time
- In fact, I like the winter just as much as the summer
- I rarely have multi-course meals at home
- I do not wear sunglasses indoors or when it's cloudy Big grin
- I dislike watching movies dubbed in Italian
- I find it immensely irritating when people cut in line
- When abroad, I have absolutely no problem eating ham, cheese, eggs etc for breakfast
- When abroad, I avoid Italian restaurants because they're rarely any good and I don't want to eat Italian food anyway: I much prefer to go for local cuisine

I'm German because...

- Half of my family is German
- As a pedestrian, I actually pay attention to traffic lights and don't cross the road if it's red (unless there are no cars, that is)

Quoting Rara (Thread starter):
hate meeting other Germans abroad and hate even more when they recognize me as German

It would probably help if you didn't do this:

I'm a typical American because:

- I own and operate two cars
- My favorite of my two cars has seats for seven of my closest friends plus me and gets barely 12 mpg around town
- I only speak English, and with my regional dialect even that's debatable (  Wink )
- I don't own a passport

I was born (1947) and bred in the UK.

I served my Country (RAF)

I love roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, rhubarb (in Yorkshire pudding with treacle) and Yorkshire pudding.

I smoke and defend my right to do so.

I miss the UK aviation industry.

I absolutely hate football, tennis and people who jog to work. (I'm old for goodness sake!)

I have the deepest respect for Margaret Thatcher and Enoch Powell (He had a wonderful insight)

I deplore the needless loss of life in 'modern' conflicts'.

Lastly. I am enjoying my free bus pass and prescriptions. (At least I've got something out of my time on this mortal coil

Well, actually, thats un-American. You see, the proper American thing to do would be to threaten lawsuit, back down, lawyer hears about potential lawsuit, file anyway, win several million dollars, continue to bitch afterwards, setup a foundation for poor Americans who can't afford healthcare, take in more then half of the money for yourself, spend the rest elsewhere, poor people only get +/- 10% of donated money, call it a day.

I guess for the most part, yes:

For one, I'm punctual.
I believe that if you have a problem, YOU have to find the way to solve it.

I am a rather atypical German. Ok, I am a beer drinker, I like to drive fast, and I make a religion out of the Bundesliga but other than that I have no typical German characteristics.

I think that I would make a good Italian since I read Airdolomiti's post:

I was a failure as an Indian...

1. Hated Bollywood with a passion.
2. Actually liked Indian Airlines.
3. Spoke Hindi like a dimwit.
4. Wondered how it'd be if the Brits returned.
5. Was never 200% sure of everything I said.
6. Made a face at a cow once.
7. Kept my socks on in flight.
8. Once stood in line to catch a bus.
9. Knew the value of Pi to only ten decimal places.
10. Engaged in pre-marital Speech (actually talked to a girl without subsequent marriage!).

...then moved to the US where I became a total failure as an American:

1. Just didn't 'get' Starbucks, Peanut Butter, Lite FM and all manner of pets.
2. At Super Bowl parties, annoyingly ask how Football is played, 25 years in a row.
3. Did not own a AMC Gremlin.
4. Absolutely do not enjoy picking up dogsh$t from the sidewalk.
5. Still trying to figure out 'Work Hard, Play Hard'.
6. Don't use gel in my hair.
7. Failed at cultivating a "Street" accent like Marlo in 'The Wire'
8. Would say "Haalf" instead of "Haff" for 1/2.
9. Don't have a burning desire to visit Tuscany - had enough with the Olive Oil, Basil and burnt bread!
10. I happen to know that Montana is actually a state in the U.S.
11. Bonus: Never been to Cheesecake Charlie's.

I am American, born and bred, but have lived over 10 years abroad. The one thing that marks me most typically as being from the "old country" is that I can't get over my addiction to carbonated colas.... I usually buy a diet generic local brand which is cheaper and frankly tastes better than diet coke or pepsi. I have a very unamerican, healthy diet save the 1.5 liters of cola I down on average each day.....

I'm English because:

I find myself whistling The Great Escape theme tune all the time
I religiously follow the Premiership/REAL fooball (ie using your feet, not hands)
I love English food, and can't see what's not to like about toad in the hole, roast beef with Yorkshire puddings etc
I consider Chicken Tikka Massala an English dish! (I know technically it was invented in England, but that's not the point)
I actively don't consider myself British (not sure why my flag is British)-England is very different to Scotland and Wales
I laugh at Americans talking about expensive fuel, when ours is over twice as much
I use lots of sarcasm/irony, often misunderstood by my American neighbour at uni (also means I didn't think the Office was a documentary, which apparently some Americans did? Read that somewhere)
I have a natural inclination to make digs at the French
I often think things to a great extent, but tone it down a great deal when I express that view
I always make the best of a situation, and hate complaining to shops/restaurants/airlines/anything else
I am bloody good at queueing, and do not moan or get impatient in a queue. Ever.

I'm American (specifically New Englander/suburban Bostonian) because:

- I say "wicked" a lot (well, I used to till everyone in LA started giving me shit for it...but I'm slowly bringing it back into my vocab)

- I get pissed off when someone is going less than 80 mph in the fast lane.....in a 55 zone.

- I drive a Honda Civic. Funny, that.

- Red Sox. Enough Said.

- The Pats.............well, it's almost baseball season  Smile

- I played soccer as a kid, but am hardly interested in watching it at all.

- I grew up in the suburbs, and don't know what I would have done had we not had a big backyard to house our football and wiffle ball games.

- I'm an asshole.

- You're an asshole, too.

- I used to buy Natty Ice because it was cheap and 6% alcohol.

- I'll bitch endlessly about the snow for 6 months, then bitch endlessly about the humidity for 6 months.

My last name is Scottish
Some of my family (clan) comes from Scotland.
My alcohol tolerance is high and I am a happy drunk.

Dutch (The Netherlands)/Norway:
I have big feet and blondish hair.
I speak Dutch when absolutely needed (never) and French.
I think that sex in the park is a freedom of expression and artwork.  Wink

In another life, I think I was Italian because:
I like to dress nice
I never cut spaghetti and I love Italian food, eating dinner at 9PM, spending time with family, siesta, etc.
I also like Italian leather (especially the nice wallet I received for my birthday present.)
I like to drink cappuccino until 9:30-10AM and then after, I am an espresso addict.
I learned to speak Italian somewhat and am still working on it. (Native Italians, ... feel free to try and test me.  Smile

Lastly,
American:
I love the NY Giants and NYC!!!

I'm typically English, because:

I'm fairly understated
I have a sense of fairness
In a neutral situation, I'll support the underdog
I drink tea, and hate coffee
I take an umbrella with me when I travel
I like football, and cricket, despite any team I follow being compete rubbish.
Despite moaning constantly about the NHS, I'd rather have it than not.
I wouldn't complain in restaurants etc.
I've got family in New Zealand.
I like bitter (the beer)
I like fish and chips, roast beef, and doner kebabs.
I'd like not to need to commute by car.
I've been on booze cruises to France.

Even though I have lived in the US for 12 years, I'm still pretty typically Canadian.

I don't drink coffee, I take tea my dear
I can speak French reasonably well, especially if it has to do with hockey or what's written on a cereal box
I curl
I wear Roots quite a bit
I don't like unthinking conspicuous consumption and feel like I should apologize for making a big purchase
I say "I'm sorry" when it's not my fault
"Sorry" is pronounced "S-oh-rry"
I say "about" in the Canadian way
I can respond to partial quotes of Canadian commercials ("It's Patrick! He took out life insurance!")
I am very polite, find interruptions to be rude, and have no trouble with a silence in a conversation - that's just the other person thinking
I am aware of news outside of my country (funny, I get this news through the Canadian news magazine I have delivered to me here in the States)
Basic healthcare should be a right that is extended to everybody
I trust my elected officials to act responsibly and make good decisions
The rights of society should always be considered along with the rights of the individual
Personal ownership of handguns is bad
A -40 day can be beautiful
When I give feedback at work, I do so indirectly. I don't say "you made a mistake and this happened". I say "here is how the project can go better next time."
I take off my shoes when I go to someone's house, and if they say I don't have to, I walk around feeling very rude
But that was when I ruled the world

So you've got a tea-drinking umbrella-carrying train-travelling NHS-using kebab-eating binge-drinking camping-holiday-going RP-speaking ex-public-schoolboy at your service here.

British, I suppose.

I am Mexican because:

-I eat tacos even for breakfast.

-I say "guey" in every sentence.

-I am a crazy soccer fan. Even more when the Mexico national team plays.

-I drive aggressively and recklessly. (I can't help it)

-Started drinking and smoking when I was 16.

-I am used to getting drunk every weekend. I only drink rum.

-Sometime I like Mariachi and Norteño music.

-I am very respectful to elders.

-There is no problem if your a couple of minutes late.

-I lie when someone is waiting on me and calls me asking where I am. I say I´m about to get there, when I am actually just leaving my house.

I'm atypical German because I:

Drink beer and had it since 14
Plan every aspect of my day and apologize profusely if late for anything
Drive fast
Get pissed when anything runs late (bus, flight, friend)
will kill for a plate of Sauerbraten mit Spaetzle/ Knoedel
Find most breads in the U.S. to be pure crap
Eat unlimited amounts of sausage products without worrying about my nitrate intake.

I'm atypical Swedish because I:

Know who invented dynamite
Realize the Swedish Chef from the Muppets is an actual person (I think he does catering around Sweden)
Always cringe during Christmas where I will have to eat some lutefisk
Can stand in 20 degree weather with no jacket without flinching
Have only two expressions: smiling or blank
Reach for my pocket 20 times a day as mobile phones ring all around me
Laugh hysterically at people in IKEA for half-assing the names of the furniture
Use mmm as a conversation filler
The air in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious because it's the same the angels breathe.

Yeah, that's pretty much true. They actually probably apply to significant portions of the rest of New England too....aside from Western CT (damn Yankee fans).

Hah....truth be told, I don't actually watch basketball at all either. I used to now and then, but I've completely lost interest.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".
