UK Pump Prices Hit £5/$10 Per Gallon

Wed Mar 12, 2008 4:42 pm

Quote: AOL News

"Motorists filling up on motorway journeys have been paying as much as £5 a gallon for their fuel after prices continued to set new records.

The AA said prices at Cherwell Valley services on the M40 were recorded at 110.9p for a litre of unleaded, above the 110p threshold for a £5 gallon.

The average price of unleaded petrol in the UK is 106.2p a litre, with diesel 112.7p - compared to 89.02p and 92.29p respectively for the same period a year earlier, the latest figures from the AA showed.

Motorists can expect more pain after oil prices in New York reached a record high of more than 109 US dollars a barrel on Tuesday.

With petrol 17.18p a litre more expensive than a year ago, it is now costing an extra £8.59 to fill up the typical 50-litre fuel tank.

The AA added that the monthly cost of petrol was £18.41 higher than the same period last year.

Much of crude oil's recent rise - up more than 20 US dollars in the past month - has been fuelled by investors seeking a hedge against the dollar's weakness."

When is this lunacy going to stop?

Actually fuel prices went a bit down in my region. A few days ago Diesel was 1.34 - 1.35 Euro per liter, today it was 1.32.
I noticed that the petrol stations over here raise their prices in the morning and on fridays, but prices drop again in the afternoons and on sundays.
The reason is very simple: People, who are in a rush to go to work in the morning and discover that they need to fill up, have no time to go loking for the cheapest petrol station. In the afternoon, after work, they are more relaxed and will drive a bit around to get the best deal.
Also, on fridays many people want to travel, but on sundays they are at home again.
Then there exist strong regional differences, e.g. the German petrol stations near the border to Luxemburg, the Czech Republic or Poland have to compete with their colleagues across the border and e.g. Luxemburg has much lower taxes on fuel than Germany. On the other hand petrol stations near the borders of the Netherlands or Denmark, where fuel is more expensive than in Germany are more expensive too.

Prices here in Austria will rise for sure. Reason: The Easter-weekend is coming.

But here the average joe earns around 900-1000 EUR per month working full time. Compare that with Hungarian-Forint 311 per Liter Diesel and an income of 300-400 EUR per month if you work full-time and you don't live near the Border to a western country. (A little bit to convert  Wink)

Well that makes my local Esso (€1.19 a litre) €5.42 a gallon. Seriously though, do people in the UK still think of petrol prices in gallons, even though they're priced in litres?

I can say for myself, and I was brought up on the old imperial system, that it is the price per litre that I am interested in now however when it comes to consumption figures I have to convert it back to MPG for it to mean anything to me.

It is like measurements I can work in metric, but for me to imagine it in my mind's eye I have to convert it to good old feet and inches . There again I often catch myself converting prices back to pound , shillings, and pence.

I know it is a shame, but there have been a lot of changes over the last 30 odd years  old

IT is funny though, as almost from my initial introduction into aviation, here in the UK aviation has used the metric system for fuel, weight etc, and when dealing with aviation matters I think and imagine things in metric rather than imperial

Our prices just went up today, with unleaded being $1.78. Now costs $17 more for a medium size vehicle per fill compared to last year

No change here in Saudi Arabia, it's still about 40 halalas a litre, which is 0.4 Saudi Riyals for a litre, which is about US$0.11 for a litre, so thats about $0.50 a gallon?

I suspect it is just a convenient milestone to use for headlines- previously it was the £1 per litre, next big number/volume combo is the £5 gallon and so on. I personally only use gallons for economy calculations, it doesn't factor at all into buying fuel.

I don't think when filling up that people think in litres or gallons, they think in terms of money. They think in mpg, but see a price in litres, so the way they think is that it costs £50 to fill a tank that cost £40 a few months back, or that they think they get less fuel for the £20 they put in.
