A (possible) Tornado Just Went Down My Street

Sat Mar 15, 2008 2:24 am

Here in downtown ATL...apparently it hit the Georgia Dome and damaged its roof. It literally went right down the street in front of my apartment...the whole damn building just started to shake. The shaking lasted for about ten seconds, and then I heard the storm sirens go off in the background. And now....all is calm....except for the numerous emergency vehicles which passed a few minutes ago.

EDIT: Apparently no one has seen an actual Tornado...word is now it could have just been intense winds....lots of damage to the CNN Center complex / Omni Hotel.

Yikes! It may have actually damaged the CNN building itself. Hope everyone is safe! I was just in Atlanta earlier this week with my family, I'll have to give them a call in Duluth and see what they're hearing on local news.

That one has me a bit worried, as it moved right through the area in DeKalb County where my employers' office/warehouse is. That same storm is going right through some areas (Conyers & Covington) where I have accounts. And the radar image they're showing is not pretty at all. There's one over in Douglas County that looks like it may skirt ATL in a short time. I'm a few miles south-southeast of ATL, so I'm keeping an eye on it.

Listening to the local news, it sounds like a real war zone near the Olympic park area.

As someone that has been in a Tornado it isn't any fun it can be really scary. I live in Oklahoma and we have tornado's all the time during the Spring. I know me and my Family we have a Tornado Plan. I did have to use the Tornado Plan a couple of weeks ago when then Tornado sirens were going off by the house.

I am watching the SEC tournament on television and there was some tense moments inside the Georgia Dome a few minutes ago. No structural damage, but there was a considerable amount of noise and movement in the ceiling and upper walls of the dome. They resumed play, hopefully the weather has moved on.

Well CNNs homepage says a "Tornado hits Atlanta" while the article still says a "possible" tornado hits Atlanta...living in Kansas, I've learned it's awfully hard to tell if it was a legitimate tornado (and not just a low funnel cloud or microburst) immediately after the storm...curious to see what it ends up being.

Why do people always say it sounded like a freight train? I've been through a tornado and it sounded like strong winds. And why don't people ever say it sounds like a passenger train? That's more accurate!

CNN article on their Web site says that most windows of the Omni hotel facing Olympic park were blown out.

I stayed at this hotel and it is huge. So that is a lot of damage and quite frightening. Hopefully the injuries are minor to all.

Here is an actual recording of what a tornado sounds like. Granted this one was a monster F 5 that pummeled Xenia Ohio. It is creepy to listen to it with the speakers turned up!

Grrrr ! Because passenger trains don't have so many bad order cars!

I've been through earthquake's and tornado's. There is a difference.
Example, an earthquake is like four SD75M's pulling grain hoppers at 70mph.
Whereas a Tornado is like two GP-9 road switchers pulling a dozen empties back to the yard.
It will require millions of dollars to launch a public education program teaching America how to know the difference.

Mark, you're just the man for the job.  biggrin

In 2002, I became spacially disoriented under a trailing edge while chasing a storm. I quickly regained it when I stopped and looked up. The fricking funnel was right above me. I dove into a culvert damned fast!

Wow...this storm came out of nowhere! I was on campus at Ga Tech this morning, flew out at 5pm and it was sunny...

Thankfully I haven't heard anything about damage on campus, but being only about 4-5 blocks from CNN/Georgia Dome I'd be surprised if there wasn't...

I was stuck going 2mph on I-75 around Delk road for about an hour and a half... some semi flipped near Wade Green Rd. If people would slow down when it rained....

I'm also supposed to be playing (see user name) in the St. Paddy's day parade in downtown tomorrow (later today, by now, I guess) - but the supposed tornado hit the parade router pretty hard, so I don't know if we'll be playing in it...

We were in the HIghlands this evening until about 11:30 pm. and saw no evidence of any storms, just a bit of rain. On the way home, however, we passed a car with the back window completely broken out, and my husband pointed out that it must have just blown out recently because there were still pieces of glass on the roof and around the edge. Sure enough when we got home and turned on the TV, we saw the news.

Oddly enough, we were supposed to attend a party tonight taking place in a loft directly behind the Dome. I'm glad we didn't get caught up in all that mess!

I was 2 miles away at a few bars in midtown and didnt notice anything at all. My freind and I were at one bar ready to leave and i saw the giant red cell on the weather channel they had up, so i told him we should probably find a bar to hunker down at until it passes. About 30 min later my roomate called to ask where i was and let me know of the tornado, so my friend and I drive around a little and found a bunch of downtown streets closed, but not visible damage was some lightpoles and stoplight sings that were blown down. We didnt notice anything from inside the bars only 2 miles away, talk about isolated!
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

I was actually living in Atlanta in April of '97 (I was 14) when tornadoes ravaged the suburbs of Atlanta one evening (especially Norcross, Duluth, and Alpharetta). Our house happened to be approximately 1/2 mile away from an F4 strike. I was on Spring Break, at the time and no one was in the house. Unfortunately, I also happened to be connecting in ATL that evening going between STT, where my parents were vacationing, and PNS (Destin), where my friend was vacationing. After our flight to Pensacola was delayed six hours by severe thunderstorms/tornadic activity at ATL that night before we were able to depart (I think we left at 12AM). I can officially say that was one of the scariest flights I've ever taken. Seeing the storms to the east and west of the aircraft with lighting going from cloud to cloud/cloud to ground, and the moderate turbulence as we headed south. It was certainly an experience.

In fact, because the area around the Georgia Dome/Centennial Park/CNN Center and the historic Cabbagetown district suffered quite a lot of damage, not only is the parade cancelled but also all convention events at the World Congress Center; the SEC basketball tournament games are now being played at Georgia Tech's Alexander Memorial Coliseum with only team members, their related families, team cheerleaders and press-credentialled people being able to attend the game.

There's another round of severe storms slated to roll through this afternoon, so we look to be under the gun yet again. We had a severe storm at my house south-southeast of ATL about 11:15 last night, but it was just heavy rain, wind, and lightning. There was some upper level circulation in it, but no tornadoes were spawned from it.

From the way it looks, the only areas with significant damage are intown. The line of storms that ripped through Downtown and some of the intown neighborhoods to the east were still pretty strong, but there hasn't been any reports of serious damage further east along the storm track than the area around Cabbagetown/Inman Park/East Atlanta/Kirkwood.

Watching some of the coverage last night, I got seriously annoyed at the actions of folks in the background of the shots. There were folks in the background outside of the CNN Center that were waving like folks do anytime a TV camera is doing a live shot in a public area. Same thing was true with some of the crowd shots at the Georgia Dome during the delay. They panned the crowd (many of whom were on cell phones, obviously letting family and friends know they were o.k.) and one woman looked up and started to wave. The gravity of the situation definitely didn't not call for folks to act in this manner. Of course at least one of the stations had to find the stereotypical tornado eyewitness to describe what they saw and heard.

After an event like that, the visitors wave and the residents don't. To the locals, it's a tragedy. To the visitors, it's a bonus adventure. The same thing happened in a town three miles from me a few years back. As the locals worked their asses off assessing and cleaning up the damage, the gawkers did stupid stuff like make faces at the camera.
