Tonight, I was informed that two of my friends wouldn't be rejoining our regular sessions at the local pub.
They were killed by an IED while on patrol in Southern Afghanistan, but it is unlikely that their sacrifices will ever be publicly acknowledged due to the fact that they were not recognised as regular British forces, while fighting every much as bit as anyone else attached to the British contingent in Afghaistan.
The people I would like to thank, other than my friends David and Richard who fought the good fight, are the military medics who tended to them, the civilian medics who received them at their base and the multitude of friends and colleagues who enabled them to not only work day to day in the harshest environment possible, but also took damn good care of them when it mattered.
Gods speed my friends. A glass will be raised to you tonight.
I would like to make it clear, to those who keep count and may bring it up, that both David and Richard were perfectly clear on my personal feelings regarding these issues, and did not have a personal issue with them. We were still friends right up until the end.

That's US Army speak for "Military Occupational Speciality". Young MCOFlyer neglects to remember this is an international forum and that the accronym MOS means something different to everyone . . . . it doesn't even mean the same to the US Air Force, or the Corps, or the Navy . . .

They were civilian contractors acting as bodyguards for western translators working for the British military presence. Both spent the last decade in the British Infantry - as what, I couldn't tell you because I don't really know.

As good a reason as any to raise a glass tonight when I finish work. And a better reason than many.
My thoughts go out to the families of your friends who are left behind when this happens. Their loss is greater than anyone's and they join the increasing number who are trying to come to terms with this. Sadly, the loss of life will go on until the job is done.

At the risk of hijacking a very serious thread, I do NOT celebrate St Patricks day. If St George got the same hype as St Paddy then maybe I would but he doesn't!
So I stand by my previous statement. A toast to ALL soldiers and civilians embroiled in the conflict in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.
