Along the lines of this thread: Coverting An Automobile To Natural Gas
Does anyone here have a Civic GX (compressed natural gas)? On paper it looks like a good alternative to the hybrid. Buy a filling pump, whose cost is offset by rebates and tax credits, and you never need to go to a gas station again. That almost sells me right there, forget about the money savings. Of course it doesn't work for long road trips, and the performance isn't too hot, but it's great as a 2nd car.

Price: $18,710, $22,600, $24,590 (tax credits offset fill pump cost)
MPG: 25/36, 40/45, 25/36 (gas gallon equiv.)
Overall MPG: 29, 42, 28
$/100k miles: $14.2k, $9.8k, $5.9k (as per EPA)
Range (miles): 345, 465, 200+
HP: 140, 110, 110
Too bad nobody makes new bi-fuel CNG cars anymore.

Another benefit--- in the U.S., a $4,000 tax credit which I believe is double the credit for a hybrid.

I might consider dumping my 07 Sentra when I move to California after I graduate at the end of 2009. This is of course, if I can't get my hands on that new FCX Clarity. Too bad the latter is ugly as sin.

I think that's what offsets the ~$4000 (?) cost of the CNG filling station (Phill).

They're pretty hard to come by. Especially in Texas. You might have to see if a Honda dealer in California can request one on their next allocation for you.

I recall someone telling me they're limited to NY & CA, but I don't see it on the Honda website.

I wonder what the range is. The fueleconomy.gov site, on its page for the Civic CNG has two widely differing numbers (333 and 170 miles) on the same page. The Honda site says 220-250 miles.

Honestly, I have trouble stroking a check for $24k and only ending up with a Civic. Nice car, but really.

Research this. Hybrid motor vehicle credit begins to phase out in the second calendar quarter after the calendar quarter in which at least 60,000 of the manufacturer’s qualifying passenger automobiles and light trucks have been sold, It affects a lot of vehicles...but none more than the Prius. Not that anyone buys a car strictly for the credit.....

Pay half for fuel, refuel at home overnight, (maybe) can use HOV lanes, a possible tax credit...
The thing pays for itself if you keep it for 100k miles (borderline w/o the tax credit). Plus it's kinda cool.

It's not a hybrid... RNOcommctr was saying the $4k tax credit was double the [current] hybrid tax credit.

I would have already bought the Civic were it not for that dumb "space craft" front end that they redesigned with the refreshed body style a few years ago. I have driven some schnazzy cars but all I want now is the 96-05 Civic or the 08 Accord.
