Fridays Thread: How Often Do You Exercise

Fri Jul 25, 2008 6:55 pm

Recently my doctor told me I needed to loose 30lbs from my 220lb (I ate too much fast food). Being that apartment complex has a Gym, I decided to exercise between 5-7x a week in order to accomplish my goal. I will lift weights for 20minutes and do the tredmill or do the running epilitic. Now, how often do you exercise and what activities do you do?

The what?

Hmm, well as for me I do boring sit ups every morning and run 4 miles around the wonderful British countryside about 4 times a week! It's not anything spectacular but I think it's spiffing!

I hate the idea of paying for gym membership when what I need is right outside my front door and free! Plus, the gym is boring...

Six days a week at the gym for me. 45mins-1hr on the eliptical, 15mins-30mins of laps in the pool, 15 minutes weights. I also jog 4-5 miles on the day I don't go to the gym.

Also, I try to do at least 60 situps a day.

Honestly, Dont do it 5-7x week. You will never be able to keep up.
Better do it conscientious 3-4 times a week for a 10 weeks than 5-7 for 2 weeks.

I used to go to my gym about 4 times a week. But the last time I went was like 3 months ago. I really need to force myself to just go instead of making excuses not to like I have been for the past 2 weeks.  expressionless

I try to hit the gym around 3 times a week. Around 30 mins on the Elliptical and 45 mins on the weights. In addition to the gym routine, I play a lot of sports over the weekends ..well in BOS thats only possible for like 4 months. Other than that, I do around 40 push ups every morning. Works for me for now!

I don't exercise very much at all. The most I ever really do is whats known around here as "the stairs", which is more or less a set of stairs linking a bunch of streets along a hillside. Provides a really good cardio work out, so good that I can't even finish the damn things ... lol!

I'd love to join a gym, but I'm deathly afraid of them ...  worried

When I was training for traithlons I would do a simple swim 800-1600m, then run 3-8 miles MWF, with a 15-20+ mile bike ride or spin class and another run on TTh.

I don't go nearly as much as I should or could these days, but it is usually biking around 10-12 mi and swimming 800-1200m a couple times a week. It is too much cardio though; I need to lift more.

I don't exercise that much. On Wednesdays and Thursdays when I deliver newspapers I walk or bike. There is an exercise facility near my house that I would like to go to. During the fall I play soccer. And during the winter I shovel snow.

I do yoga about 2x per week.

I walk 2 miles about 3x per week.

I spend 2 hours mowing the lawn once per week.

In the winter, I curl 3x per week.

I try to stay active. My problem is that I like food too much.  Smile

Scarlet,

I am with you on that one. My problem is I eat more than I should. My only solution is to give up bad foods for good foods. Example, if I eat fast food and go out in the same day, I will take it easy and eat some fruit that very next day to offset the bad food.

Somme foods I eat a lot:

Grilled chicken
Turkey sandwich on wheat bread
caesar salads
Colt cub sub on wheat bread from subway
water

Three times a week 30min treadmill, and a few series of situps and pushups. I try not to depend much on the car by taking the subway three times a week.

I don't like gyms that much, I've never been able to find one with half a decent trainer, though I'm aware that I need to lift.

Should do more exercise. I eat less than the recommended amount of calories, watch the fat intake, but walking to work and back each day is only 5 miles - there was one point at which I got into going swimming a few times a week - I'm planning to get a month pass to the pool, so I'm compelled to go there often enough so I can get value for my money!

I typically spend about and hour to hour and a half on the treadmill six days a week. I should be on it right now, but I'm just too tired.

There was a period of time freshman and sophmore year of college when I'd run 5-6 miles 4 days a week and on the other 3 days I'd lift weights and play 2 hours of waterpolo with all the associated swimming (probably 4,000 yards or so). By junior and senior year, I'd gotten a bit lazy and toned that down to just 3 waterpolo practices a week and maybe 2 days of running if that, which interestingly made me look more fit! I think I was burning myself out from overexercising when I was going hard 7 days a week, and now with rest days I seem to get the same or better results for less effort. Anyway, now I'm in need of getting back to that because I haven't been in a pool doing any real swimming since my senior season ended about 3 months ago, and I've been trying to play tennis for 2 hours every day but that has only happened about 4 times a week so far. One more thing about weight training- it is a great thing, but I've found that I get the same sort of results by simply getting myself a pullup bar, doing 50-100 of those every day, 200 situps, and 300 pushups. It is repetitive and probably doesn't work all of the muscle groups that you can hit in a weight room, but it does give you a great deal of strength and saves having to share time and space with boneheaded gym nazis.

currently developing abs muscles is the challenge.

Your solution will never work out. It's like taking a poison one day yes and the next day not to recover. You have to give up with the crap at all. Maybe grant yourself 1-2 times maximum monthly a visit to the crap heavens just to reward yourself for the effort  Wink

Lucky bugger! I'm 6ft and 88kg, that's still going down though - a couple of months ago I got on the scales at work and they read 101kg, time to stop eating so much when you get into triple figures  Embarrassment

Now I'm back living in Devon for the summer and possibly more I'll be picking up cycling again, I'll normally do a minimum of about 20 miles every day, sometimes more like 50 or 60, and all of it over Dartmoor which is hilly/mountainous to say the least. The only problem is you have one very numb backside after coming off a full day riding through streams and rough terrain, plus you're bound to get a puncture at some point, and if the trails very rough it'll rip your tyres apart pretty well too... not to mention your legs/arms/face if you fall off.

Also play golf when I have time, usually once or twice a week.

3-4 times a week, I hit the gym before I go to work.

I usually bike to the gym as opposed to taking the bus or driving, and at said gym I usually spend an hour or so there before heading off to work.

Work itself gives me a fair workout. On several occasions during the work week, I will be lifting weights upwards of about 120 pounds over short distances.

I go to the gym every day, twice a day. Even during the week, before I start work in the morning, I lift weights. After work, more lifting weights. After working out at the gym, I'd head for the beach to swim a half mile-800 meters. I'd head back to the grm to jog on the treadmill for 8 miles. Did I mention I ride my bike wherever I go? So, that's like 8 miles of cycling.

I go to the gym quite a bit, five or sometimes six days a week. To start with, I have a quota of six miles per week running on the treadmill, broken up in sessions as I see fit, though in most weeks I do eight or nine miles. Sometimes I substitute the stationary cycle or the elliptical trainer for treadmill running. In fact, for the last couple of weeks I've been using them exclusively, just for a change of routine. When making this substitution I apply a formula (a strictly ad hoc thing, based on how hard the different exercises feel) under which one minute of treadmill running = two minutes of stationary cycling = three minutes of ellipting. As running the 6-mile quota takes a total of one hour at my typical pace of about 6 mph, that means to get the equivalent amount of exercise I have to use the stationary cycle for two hours, ellipt for three hours, or some combination thereof. When I use the stationary cycle or the elliptical I set the resistance at a mid-range level and try to maintain a pace of 19 mph (cycle) or 10,500 strides per hour (elliptical).

As for weights, I do deadlifts, stiff-legged deadlifts, calf raises and either squats or 45-degree leg presses every five or six days, while doing bench presses, cable/barbell rows, and overhead presses every third day. In addition, I try to use the gym's heavy bags and speed bags on a regular basis.

Ok heres my work pattern....help suggest an exercise time schedule.

Mon -Fri i work 2300-0800hrs or until the last aircraft departs which ever is later....In case of a snag its a longer delay could be 16-32hrs.[that day exercise is out]

I try to rest for 6hrs,ideal should be 10 hrs.

Just too tired after a night shift to exercise & not sure if exercising prior to a night shift is good,so currently settle for afternoon.

Then theres the Aircraft related studies & outside work that takes some time.

I'm a bit of an expert on weight loss.

First of all, EXERCISE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN DIET. I have seen people lose weight on a steady diet of fast food. I don't recommend this for many reasons, but the fact is that as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. This is a simple physical fact.

Second, DON'T ROUTINELY EXERCISE ALONE. If you exercise alone, it simply becomes self-flagellation and it's not fun and you won't keep up with it. Find a group. Find an Ultimate Disc team or a basketball team or, in my case, a swim team. That makes exercise into a regularly-scheduled social activity shared with others, which makes it fun and makes you look forward to your workouts. A number of studies have actually demonstrated this advice to be true.

Third, the evidence from the medical literature is that in order to affect and maintain a weight loss of about 50 lbs, you should engage in at least ONE HOUR of vigorous aerobic (cardio) exercise -- ready for this? -- FIVE times weekly. (in spite of what most doctors parrot to their patients from some poorly-done nutrition and lifestyle course in med school, like the one I took)

I swim for 4,000+ yards five times weekly with a team. In the last three weeks I've lost 8 lbs as I've finished residency and now can swim appropriately hard.

You need to work up to that slowly or you'll wear yourself out and you won't continue. But basically, the idea is to change your metabolism from that of a sedentary fat guy to that of an active athlete. You do that with regular, intense exercise.

I recommend the following exercise, as well: in the next week, consume animal flesh only one meal per day.

I should do it more often. For the last 4 month I also ate too much fast food, and I'm getting fat.  Wow!  Wow!  Wow!

Before I was at the gym 3 times a week, and I had a lot of fun. I also did rides with my Mountainbike from time to time, and I tried to go swimming once a week.

Now I'm moving to Switzerland, and I'm looking forward to do more sports and loose some weight. Don't wanna be a fattie..

I do it the easy way. Just make myself active throughout the day and not bother with official exercise. A good walk at either end of the bus ride every day; go up/down stairs several times a day (I'm the type who'll only use an elevator if I have to); bike/walk if I can (basically only go by car when theres no other reasonable options); make an effort to get up and go play something at lunch instead of just sitting around; and so on.

I have seen people lose weight on a steady diet of fast food. I don't recommend this for many reasons, but the fact is that as long as you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. This is a simple physical fact.

True that, during high school football and waterpolo season when I was running and swimming like mad, I'd literally eat anything and everything and keep getting skinnier. It was a combination of my 18 year old metabolism and the exercise, but I loved it!

Wow, you're a weed!

Proud weedie. At least I'm not fat.  Wink
And I know that if I don't have a good exercise habit I will become fat when I'm older.

See it on the bright side, my target weight is 80 kg, so you're closer to my target weight that me.  Smile

Then Again I joined the military.

I think that is a good way to get in shape, a bit dangerous maybe.  Smile But the Swedish military seems boring, I think the US is alot better.

(I know of a lot of people who have had injuries as a result of running).

Try the treadmill, it works and absorbs lots of impact.
