My Major Health Scare This Week...

Mon Aug 04, 2008 1:04 am

On Monday, all seemed normal at work... busy as a bastard and trying to scout out a conference room for a meeting I really didn't want to attend. My supervisor and myself went up the back stairs to the engineering dept, and all of a sudden I felt this massive burning sensation in the left side of my chest. WTF? I'm only 30, this can't possibly be what I think it is... I was able to make it back downstairs to my desk hoping this pain was a bad pepper or something I had for lunch.

It wasn't... I had my supervisor escort me to the medical area, and the next thing I knew I was headed to the hospital in an ambulance. Through Monday night into Tuesday morning, the doctors determined that I did not have a heart attack, as all my enzyme tests looked fine, but suspected I had a blocked artery in my heart, as my EKG readings were not normal or consistent. An angiogram on Wednesday morning confirmed my diagnosis... fortunately I only needed an angioplasty and not a bypass.

After being transferred to another hospital (the one I was first rushed to does not perform angioplasties) they completed the procedure, then later had to perform another surgery to repair 2 pseudoaneurysms that developed.

Here I am on Sunday, finally at home. A lot of pain, worry, and hassle that could have been prevented by yours truly, but because I had the "it can't happen to me" attitude, it did.

I have the greatest support system any person could have to get me through it. My mom was there every day thinking of the right questions to ask, my supervisor and a couple of my coworkers visited me in the hospital, and my best friend/roommate has taken care of me since I got home. There is no level of thanks I can ever give to these people for the sacrifices they have made and help they have given me. I can't rewrite the past, but I can ensure for their sake (and my own!) that it never happens again.

Hey Duff, really sorry to hear about that. I'm glad things seem to be better now. Thank Goodness for that. Life can be so scary at times with things like these. But what's important is that they caught it in time. All the best buddy, take care. Thanks for letting us know you're okay.  Smile.

All the best,
Dave
