BAH, those are some expensive Grapes. I wonder how they taste. I wonder if they would pair nicely with some square Watermelons. Japan is such an intriguing country.

That's nothing - a local megagrocery about half an hour from my place had five showcase watermelons on display and for sale for around $300 a pop when we were last there a two weeks ago. Upon a return visit over the weekend, we found three of them had actually been sold. Crazy stuff.
Certain varieties of oversize peaches and apples from Nagano will typically sell for $10-$12 each and distance is not a factor. Nagano is the next prefecture north from Nagoya and it costs us just as much as Tokyoites pay, should we make the boneheaded decision to actually purchase overpriced fruit. I recently came across mangos from Okinawa that were $25 as well.
For a country that claims it doesn't outwardly display its wealth on an individual to individual basis like Americans do, there's a lot of blatantly high price-driven consumerism among the middle class here.

Really...right now we've got some nice looking mexican mango here in central Iowa at about .88 each in all the local markets. I get to enjoy one for breakfast nearly every day. I top up my supply about once every four days and get change back from my five dollar bill.
Of course they don't hold a candle to the ones my grandfather got from a neighbor in exchange for the limes he had growing in his back yard....there was an informal trade among his neighbors in Coconut Grove lo these 40 years ago. One would have an avocado tree, another lemons or oranges, another coconut and one guy who didn't have anything brewed beer. The south Florida mangoes of my youth spawned a lifelong addiction and they smelled divine.
