Mosin-Nagant Owners - Where To Get A Scope Mount?

Tue Aug 26, 2008 5:12 am

Before I get flamed for "butchering" and sporterizing my 91/30, I am not doing any permanent mods nor did I trash the original wooden stock, I'm just trying to build a cheap scout rifle...

Anyways, I cant find a mount that can take the recoil. I tried a weaver mount but it shakes loose after only 10 rounds. Makarov.com used to make one that mounted on the rear sight mounts directly (no stupid screws to loosen up) you just have to punch out the pins. It sounded really promising until they stopped making it before I could ever buy one. PU mounts are out of the question since they cost hundreds.

Any ideas?

Yeah I was going to flame you but I do give you credit for trying to locate a non modifing mount.

I have to M-N's (91/30 and a M44) and I don't think I would look them, but you might want to get a copy of "Shotgun News" there are usually several different options available in the back of that rag.

Forgot to mention I tried that. Instead of lasting 10 shots, it lasted 20. lol

I hardly think that doing a few mods on a fifty dollar Combloc rifle constitutes butchering.

Put it together with the red stuff and it'll never come apart again. Jet motor mechanics know.

Hello All

I own about 10 Mosins and have tried all the different mounts. I think the best is the Russian PE mount. Attaches to the receiver and you can still use the iron sights. The mount will cost you about $100 and you have to get a gunsmith to install it.

The problem I have with the Mosin is the recoil. I purchased a muzzle break off of ebay and it flew off the end of the rifle after 8 shots. Unfortunately it did a good job with the recoil for those 8 shots. I am thinking about treading the end of the barrel and installing a AK muzzle break. Most of the gunsmiths I talk to say it works.

If you are worried about cutting up you Mosin just remember that there are millions of them and cost about $125.

Enjoy you Mosin.

Cheers

The price has gone up then. When these first started coming on the market in quantity from Finland I bought half a dozen for around $60 each. The two I ended up keeping were a couple of arsenal reworks with VKT barrels that are tack drivers for sure. They were reworked, test fired and into the grease they went until I retrieved them fifty years later. I also picked up a Chinese M1944 carbine copy, and that sonuvabitch is seriously recoil oriented. It will just plain knock you silly. It is not a nice experience.

I got mine for $69. My local gun shop has them from $69 all the way up to $500 for the original sniper version.
