RIP Phil Hill, American Racing Legend
I apologize that this thread is late. Mr. Hill, the first Amercian Formula 1 world champion has died at the age of 81 on the 28th of August. He also won the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Sad to lose Phil Hill and Paul Frère in the same year.
I always looked forward to both of their contributions in Road & Track.
Interestingly, Phil Hill provided a foreword to later editions of Paul Frère's book "Sports Car and Competition Driving". I bought 2 copies earlier this year (one for me and one for my father) after Paul Frère's passing. I'd recommend picking up a copy if you're an enthusiast.

Well I am sorry to hear that. It was announced that he was too ill to attend this year's Historic Car races at Laguna Seca, just a few weeks ago though I guess he did attend, it wasn't really a public appearance.
It was Phil Hill who first sparked my interest in Formula 1 when he was driving for the Ferrari team. I also recall his LeMans victories with the late Olivier Gendebien. I feel privileged to have seen him win a race at Laguna Seca just a few years ago, drifting a wooden-spoked 1922 Sunbeam down through the esses.
