2010 Ford Mustang

Fri Oct 10, 2008 10:37 pm

I spotted this 2010 Ford Mustang today on my way home from work. It is the GT model. It sounded very good. This photo was taken at Allen & Sibley Roads in Brownstown, Michigan (Southern Suburb of Detroit). It is common for pre-production models to be in camouflage when they are out and about. This car was actually grey and it could be seen in a few spots where it was not covered by stickers.

What do you think of this car? I like the current model better, which was a big hit for Ford. I wonder if this model will turn heads like previous models when they were released?

The Mustang should always be a rear wheel drive V-8 car. The car should always be about power. When Ford got away from that classic look the car became a turd like the 74-78 models (sorry Superfly I know those are your favorite) and the crappy 80s 4 cylinder models (the SVO was cool).

I agree. The front end looked a bit different too, but not that much. The interior was similar, but the console was very different, but the cluster was close to the 2008 model. I am going to a Ford hydrogen vehicle thing for auto tech techers and students on Saturday so maybe I'll see some cool stuff there.

The Mustang is now facing the first real competition than its had in many model years, so Mustang isn't the only modern muscle-car option available to buyers...

I know the Mustang II was not the best Mustang. The ones from the 1960s were better but the Mercury Cougar variant had even more.  yes
My least favorite Mustang would be the 1994-1998 models. They look too Probe-like.

I am so glad that Ford didn't listen to those out there that want the Mustang to take on a different flavor. Just look at what GM & Chrysler did to 'update' their classic ballsy cars such as the Nova, Duster, LeMans and Charger in the 1980s.

Those are very dull.

I don't know what happened to the phone. I couldn't call SF, but I had no problem dialing locally. I was in the garage later and didn't hear the house phone ring. I'll call on Saturday. Also the IM isn't working.

I've seen other pictures of it and for the most part, it is more or less just a face lift although a drastic one. Supposedly the coupe will be available with a panoramic glass roof which is a surprise since the last time a sunroof was even offered as an option was with the old fox bodies up until 92.

I think that they can be done up quite nice, in other words, they do have potential. But interestingly enough, the Probe was actually supposed to replace the Mustang in the '90s.

Actually, thats a great example. The 99 model received the new edge design which was just a face lift over the previous model, but enough of a face lift to drastically alter the appearance of the car, giving it a much more aggressive look. Which is pretty well what the 2010 model will be over the 2005-09 models.

The 1999-2001 were my favorites because of the split stereo system with the AM/FM cassette deck and the Compact Disc player positioned beneath the main stereo. It made it look more like a home component rack system. 2002 it went to a large square in the middle of the dash and I think it was CD only by then.
I wouldn't mind having one in black with silver racing stripes along the bottom.
Convertible of course.

Talk about reading far too much into a comment.

See:

They took a step backward with the new model. One that, for my generation, takes a likeness to the only thing we remember them as: White-smoke rustbuckets on their last legs, on the verge of taking their final trip to the junkyard.

There's no question about what the Mustang should be under the skin. I wouldn't even consider anything less than a rear-wheel drive V8, manual tranny at that, to fit the role. However, when it comes to perception of appearance, for some this model may instill a feeling of youthful nostalgia...for others, nausea and a case of light-headedness.

IIRC, nearly every Mustang had a 6-cylinder engine of some type available with the exception of the '87-'93 models and possibly the '71-'73 versions (not 100% sure on the latter).

If they keep the current live axel the Mustang will be the same old turd it has always been, Ford needs to replace the live axel with a real independant rear end, I think the problem is Ford US engineers don't have the talent and skill for the job, they should outsource it to Ford Australia who can engineer a decent rear drive platford.

Ford has some great products right now. I was looking at Town Cars on Saturday. When the lease is up on my Chrysler I think I will buy a used ( one or two year old) Town Car. I want one of the last V-8 RWD (solid axle) cars made in the USA. That is the way a car should be.

I'm kinda mixed on that. I did like the look of it, but the stock system, even the Mach460 which I had was average. So if you wanted to do any aftermarket modifications, it was a bit more labour intensive as opposed to the single unit that eventually replaced the split system. Needless to say, although an outdated look, the split system was pretty cool. Kinda reminded me of the system I had in my 93 Sunbird.

In my opinion the 94-99 Saleen is the best looking Mustang, although the 2000-04 GTO looked sharp too.

I find the current Mustang's dashboard repulsive, and the rear and front, ugly. The rear look of this 2010 Ebola Mustang looks to have been improved, thankfully.

The current Mustang needs to be customized perfectly to look proper, like this:

Ugh.. that Dodge Challenger looks like a carbon copy of a 1970s Chevelle, that thing looks just as ugly too. Does Chrysler really expect to sell many of these? I'm sure there's a niche but if the current retro-inspired Mustang hasn't been that big of a hit, I expect this Dodge will be discontinued in 3 years.

I was referring to the 02-05 model which was based on the DEW platform same as the S Type and Lincoln LS.

We had Jaque Nasser from Ford Australia and he helped run the company into the ground. I worked for Ford during that time and he was not a great leader.

But he was a Leb not a real Aussie so Australia can't be blamed for him (why I defending Australia I don't know).

Quoting Falstaff (Reply 32):
I want one of the last V-8 RWD (solid axle) cars made in the USA. That is the way a car should be.

And that's why American cars have never been popular outside North America, why not buy a decent car made in Germany or one of those Pontiacs which are made in Australia.

and it's only 200HP.

That is 50 more than my favorite Olds 307 powered V-8 cars from GM in the 80s. 65-75 more than the RWD Cadillacs with the HT-4100.

Isn't the V-6 they chose originally a truck engine (lots of low end torque)? I thought I read that in C&D.

Yes, it is. The 4.0L V6 in the 'stang is the same engine used as the base engine in the Explorer and as an upgraded engine in the Ranger.

The Pony package is called the 'Barbie' option in Texas!

IMHO, I don't think the Pony Package is as much Barbie as the Berlinetta Camaros of the 70s and 80s were. I've seen more guys driving present generation Mustang Pony Packages (both fastback & ragtops models) than Camaro Berlinettas... at least in the northeastern part of the country. To be honest, I don't believe I've EVER seen a guy drive a Belinetta Camaro ALONE.

While I was at the Ford Nationals in Carlisle, PA last June, I saw some Mustangs Pony Packaged ragtops that indeed received aftermarket conversions that looked like Barbie Mustangs. I forget the name of the conversion packages/manufacturer but these cars were colored in either bright pink, bright flourescent green or a bright beige-yellow clearcoats. Not to sound sexist, but these aftermarket conversions were definitely Mustangs targeted towards females.

I believe that the 4.0L engine used in the Mustang V6 is indeed the same one used in the Ranger and Explorer. However, in the Mustang, it is possible to get over 20 mpg on the highway. While driving from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania last Labor Day, with the top down; I averaged about 27 mpg (all highway miles) which bettered the posted EPA estimate (which for 2007, still utilized the old rating system).

Quoting MIAMIx707 (Reply 36):
Does Chrysler really expect to sell many of these?

You are aware that for 2009, the Challenger offers an expanded lineup that includes more affordable models: 3.5L V6-powered SE, the 5.7L HEMI V8 R/T along with the now-familiar and pricey 6.1L HEMI SRT8.

Quoting MIAMIx707 (Reply 36):
I'm sure there's a niche but if the current retro-inspired Mustang hasn't been that big of a hit

No offense, but IIRC, we had a similar discussion before in another thread. You seem to live in a neighborhood that doesn't buy modern domestic vehicles in general. I would suggest looking around a more middle-America neighborhood before making that type of claim. As I stated in the fore-mentioned earlier thread; there are at least 6 current generation Mustangs within 1 mile radius of where I live (not including mine). Does that mean that the current Mustang is a sales blockbuster? No. But it's not been a sales slouch either. IIRC, the Mustang ragtop is now the best selling convertible in the land; partly due to Chrysler screwing up the Sebring stylingwise.

As far as the Challenger (and even the 2010 Camaro) is concerned. The sales of those vehicles will be dependent upon what happens w/the cost of gas. If it remains stable or drops, more models will be sold. Should the price skyrocket again; sales across the board will take a hit with the standard V8 models (Challenger R/T and Mustang GT) taking the largest hit.

Another factor will be the upcoming CAFE increases AND who gets elected to Congress in the next 2 election cycles (which could either strengthen or weaken regulations). Those factors alone could either restrict V8 models to just the specialty types (SRT8 and Shelbys) or eliminate these vehicles all together.

In the auto business, timing is everything. Had the Challenger and Camaro been released a year or two earlier (before gas prices really went beserk); they would've sold better at the Mustang's expense IMHO.

I have no idea what a Belinetta Camaro is....I likely wasn't old enough to drive then...

And I misquoted...they call them "Barbie lights" on the Mustangs.

If you drive in the west side of L.A....there are a plethora of high school girls driving their conv. V6 Mustangs there.....all pretty much equipped the same way (Pony pack.)...possibly this is how it started. Not sure how it got to Texas (no, it wasn't me).

You must be referring to the smaller supplemental/fog lamps that are only available on the Pony Package.

No doubt bought w/Daddy's (or even Mommy's) money.

When I was in high school (early 80s) I was driving around in a 1969 Ford LTD (302 engine) sedan that I paid $300 for... got 2 years out of it.

So what. Most of them were around before I was old enough to drive too, but I do remember them.

Here's a vintage ad for a '79 Camaro Berlinetta

Pic. of an '83 model

Basically, it was a Camaro with luxury trimmings & appointments; it was available with a 6-cylinder or a V8. The package ran through the 1986 model year.

Nah, you gotta add a few personal touches (not like pic in reply 36  no  ), just a few minor upgrades like an in-dash nav system, nicer exhaust, wheels and maybe a some simple body skirts, just to round it out a bit more.  Wink

Off base in what respect, Ford hasn't built a decent rear wheel drive car in the US, now here is the kicker ever, plus the 02 - 05 Thunderbird was built on the DEW platform same as the S Type Jag however it was a poor selling and not so good car, I don't think I was off base at all.

Sounds about right... my Explorer with the 4.0 gets 21MPG highway, so I'd assume that you'd do significantly better with the lighter chassis.

Okay, that's a little different than referring to the whole vehicle as a Barbie/woman's vehicle whereas the fore-mentioned Camaro Berlinetta, in its day, was indeed referred to as the Girl's Camaro.

The EPA sticker highway rating for the V6 automatic (which mine is) was 26 mpg. The 5-speed was listed as 30 mpg highway (again, under the old rating system). Thus far, I've only been able to achieve 27 once... mainly because most of my driving has been mixed (city/highway) as of late.

No, no, no...I was just referring to the lights. I think Mustangs actually look better with no fog lights at all (the GT foglights look like headlamps). Just a preference.
