Any Fans Of The Muppet Movie?

Wed Oct 22, 2008 1:44 pm

Hi Everyone,
I think like a lot of you out there, we've all been stressed out by the economic times and frankly where this world is going in many ways...

Last night I came across an old VHS cassette we had of the Muppet Movie. My copy was recorded from TV in 1985, so it was funny to see all the commercials from that age, especially the Chrysler K Car ads

This might bring Superfly some Memories: Dodge Boys and the K Car:

The movie itself was magnificent. Maybe I'm waxing lyrical here, but it seemed like a simpler and innocent time. I still remember the songs from the movie and even words after 22 years!

Watching Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear in that Studebaker is just hilarious!

Any other fans?

It's been a long time, but I still remember it fondly.

"I'm lost."

"Have you tried Hare Krishna?"

If I remember correctly, this was a running gag in the movie.

And I think "It Ain't Easy Being Green" is a moving song. Here's the last verse:

"When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why? Wonder,
I am green and it'll do fine, it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be."

Rest in peace, Jim Henson.

The muppet movies are just a vague memory for me, but I have some DVDs of the TV shows which are great fun, especially the guest stars.

I may have seen this, though I'm not sure. The clips on YouTube seem vaguely familiar.

I have seen The Muppets Take Manhattan and that one movie where they end up in London for some reason. Wonderful childhood memories. I guess now I need to start hunting for those movies on DVD.

Interesting trivia tidbit from New Mexico Magazine about The Muppet Movie:
Other than its opening scene, which was shot at Lake Sherwood, California, the movie was filmed exclusively in Albuquerque, NM.

I personally think that the Muppets Christmas Carol
should be compulsary for all children under 10 in School.
They should be made to watch it at Christmas Time.
Its the best Movie ever.... Big grin

That's it!! That's the one I've been trying to recall the name of all day. I watched it so many times that my parents threatened to ban me from it.  Big grin

Silly thread. Silly movie.
And one of my all time favorites. I saw it on a cold frosty day in Dallas and then got the music album. Now as a parent I hear "Rainbow Connection" being done by Sarah McLachlan on my kids CD's and realize what a really wonderful song it is.

The music was mostly composed by Paul Williams. I only ever knew him as a second rate actor but he has quite the list song credits.

Kermit: Hey, Fozzie, I want you to turn left if you come to a fork in the road.
Fozzie: Yes sir, turn left at the fork in the road.
[drives past a giant fork]
Fozzie: Turn leeeeft!
Kermit: I don't believe that.

And for aviation fans:
Kermit: [watching Gonzo fly over the fair with a handful of balloons] Gonzo! what are you doing?
Gonzo: About seven knots!

It's interesting that Jimmy Webb was resurrected, but not Paul Williams. Yes, some of his songs are twee, but others are heart-tweaking. The Bugsy Malone soundtrack is another fun Paul Williams composition!

I was hooked when I heard this line when Fozzie is driving...

"A bear in a natural habitat... a Studebaker."

Ah man, is that the original Muppet Movie? I seem to remember seeing it long long ago. Is that the one where the French guy is after Kermit to cook him into frogs' legs? And one of the muppets (forget which one, maybe Fozzy?) becomes huge at the end?

Vague memories....long time ago.

In other news, my family had a Plymouth Reliant K for quite awhile. You'd floor the accelerator from a standstill, and the car would literally stand there for half a second (WITHOUT the wheels spinning) before it started slowly accelerating  Smile

YES! I am a huge fan of this movie, and own an actual DVD copy. (There may even be a song or two from it on my iPod) There is something about the Muppets, with all of their innocence, songs and humor that have let them stand the test of time, and still entertain us in such a different society today. Those performers are so talented and versatile. Even though I have seen behind the scenes footage on youtube which shows how these Muppets actually come to life, I still look at them as real characters and individuals, which is a testament to the great work all of those guys have done. As far as the movie goes, I think it is one of the best Muppet Movies along with Muppet Treasure Island for some odd reason. The cameos are great. I am glad to see that there are many other fans on this site.

My favorite quote from the Muppet movie would have to be the finale:
Kermit: [singing] Life's like a movie, write your own ending...
All Muppets: [singing] Keep believing, keep pretending; we've done just what we've set out to do, thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you!

For the Secret of NIMH, he wrote the lyrics for the theme ("Flying Dreams"). Interestingly enough, when he sings the song during the credits, it fits the movie perfectly. When heard outside of the movie, it's somewhat dark. But that didn't stop Bright Eyes (sung by Art Garfunkel, from Watership Down) which is VERY popular in the UK.

As for the Rainbow Connection, it's a great song. It's one of the songs I'm trying to memorize for piano playing.

Count me in as a fan of the Muppets and the The Muppet Movie. What better start to a film is there than Kermit sitting on a log in a swamp playing the banjo and singing the Rainbow Connection. Wasn't that song nominated for an Oscar?

Although the Muppets were intended for kids there were quite a few jabs at contempary adult issues at the time and tons of one liners poking fun at life in general.

One of my favorite Muppet scences comes from the Johnny Carson show. Rolf the dog was Johnny's "guest" and he and Johnny were talking about life and such and Johnny asked Rolf if he had ever been in love. Rolf responds "yes, she was a real bitch"...Johnny fell on the floor laughing.
