On the day that Tottenham Hotspur sacked Juande Ramos, they announce that Harry Redknapp will become the new boss!

Harry Redknapp will be unveiled at White Hart Lane on Sunday before Spurs' game with Bolton Wanderers!

What a shame that it's not only the players who move solely for money purposes. I have always respected Harry Redknapp while at Portsmouth, but now I just hope Tottenham continue their poor form, get relegated with Redknapp out of a job. No doubt he'll then go back to Portsmouth and expect to be let straight in (again).

And what were Tottenham thinking by sacking Ramos? He's been their best manager over the past few years, and their poor form is solely due to the fact that they failed to bring in sufficient replacements for those who left (Keane, Defoe, Berbatov, Robinson - some of their best players).

Since the Carling cup he managed to win three league games and oversaw the worst start in Tottenham's history. Thats why he was sacked. Was he totally to blame? No. The board have to take a portion of blame. But the days of giving managers time has long gone.

Jol managed two fifth place finishes (the clubs best premiership placings) and was responsible for two of the three european qualifications, including missing out on the Champions League by a whisper. So silverware, no. A better team? as you say, Yep.

The German Bundesliga is probably the fourth strongest league in Europe, behind England, Spain and Italy. The amount of times that teams from those respective countries have won the Champions League/European Cup can also back that up (Italy, Spain and England with 11, Germany with 6).

The International team has nothing to do with it.

Agreed. But post CC Ramos had all these departed players still there and still could not inspire the side.

I can point to Jol being a successful manager for consecutive highest place finishes, the fact he created a side which banged in a 100 goals, has carried his coaching style to Germany with current success and for being the man most Spurs fans wish was still in charge.

Look, we can agree to disagree all day. I do not accept that Ramos is our best manager of recent times because he simply wasnt IMO. I believe it was Jol.

I don't know if Redknapp is the answer, but he will at least get them to play with a sense of self-respect.

I seriously doubt he moved solely for the money. Isn't it just possible that he wants the challenge of restoring the fortunes of a club with a much bigger reputation? As long as he's sure he'll be given the opportunity to do it his way, I don't blame him at all.

Well if they were working with the same team, then it only proves that Ramos was able to get the team playing better. Jol was sacked after a poor run of form, Ramos took over the same team and led them to silverware.

At the end of the day, I don't really care which manager was 'better'. I'm an Arsenal fan, so whoever was the worst Tottenham manager will always be my favourite. I'm just saying that more people remember trophies than 5th place in the League, and for that reason many will praise Ramos (or at least they did at the time).

Ok in all seriousness... I think Harry has taken on a hell of a job.. I wish him luck... Ever since I've been into football (or soccer for our US friends) Spurs have always been up there with the best... I just hope he can turn it around for the fans sake.

Well, he certainly wasn't attracted "solely by the money", was he? You might want to read the next sentence in my post for a possible clue as to why he didn't take the job. There's been a perceived problem behind the scenes at Newcastle for some time. As I said, money does not seem to be the main incentive for Harry Redknapp.

Tottenham are just a joke of a club, they've had nearly a dozen or so managers in the last 15-20 years, which has got them nowhere. All this delusional talk of breaking into the top 4 and challenging Arsenal is just fantasy. They sold one of the deadliest strike forces in England, (Berbatov, Keane, Defoe) and brought in inadequate replacements, now they're wondering where it's all gone wrong! Bring on Wednesday.

Ramos mistake all came down to team selection and playing players such as Bentley in the completely wrong positions....You buy Giovanni and Bentley, both young talented footballers and then relegate them to the bench along with the likes of Lennon??

The problem with spurs has always lied in our defence. As was seen last year, one of the highest scoring teams in the league as well as one of the highest conceding. Now this year with Bent up front , its hopeless. It just shows in Spurs' record how much the back four really miss Ledley King. Lets hope Redknapp will turn it around.

Can't wait for Wednesday, hopefully it will be a cracker.

I am no spurs expert, only watch them when they are on sky.
But you must wonder how you can take a side as talented as the one martin jol had and sell it off piece by piece and expect quick results?
To gel a team takes time, to build a system takes time.

Martin jol was a great manager, he has a proven trackrecord that speaks for itself. Ramos was different. he did a good job with sevilla, a club famous for its strong scouting system. he came into a model and did the best with it.
I am not sure if Spurs had an idea about what he stood for and what sort of environment he had produced in or if they only looked at his previous two seasons.

Selling Berbatov, who was the best forward I watched in the premier league the last two years and selling keane the same summer is nicely put not optimal timing...

well now they have corrupt harry and his dealings and wealings. Cockney harry with his sort of play in spurs. Who would have believed that. My hope is that one of his first transfer targets will be Sol Campbell, would make me laugh if that happened.
They are sure to be in for a ride of transfers and cheap fixes. the bad news, harrys teams have a tendancy to fall aprt the years after he leaves due to him buying old and expensive and then running away. The good news, not many managers are better at getting the best out of a squad of unknown africans.

the thing is, Spurs is a massive club and they have alot of potential, lets hope they can pull through and start living up to its potential.

As a Spurs fan, the appointment of 'Arry, doesn't fill me with confidence. I think he knows how to motivate players and get the best out of them, but tactics wise i think he is nieve.

I also think the Board of directors at Spurs are also quite cunning aswell. Bring in Redknapp before the transfer window and see what he can do with the team, rather than in January along with £30-£40million to bring in players. (which no doubt would be....Crouch,Dafoe,Campbell and some other player thats he's heard about, but never seen)

Some of you have mentioned that he is only in it for the money.... Before appointing Zola, Redknapp was offered £65000 a week to go back to West Ham by there now almost bankrupt (allegedlly) Icelandic owners, but that didn't entice him away from Pompey

Obviously money is a factor - he's not going to take a big pay cut - but the evidence strongly suggests to me that there was a lot more than just the money to his decisions to turn down Newcastle and West Ham and accept the Spurs job.

The difference between now and previous attempts to lure him from Fratton Park are the FA cup and the UEFA cup campaign. Portsmouth have got as far as they can for the time being and Harry knew that, he also knows that the only way for Portsmouth now is down and I suspect he didn't fancy being a part of that because the Fratton crowd would soon turn on him because of the time he spent at Southampton.

I have followed Portsmouth for nearly twenty years and I have seen some rubbish in my time but although the media tries to portray Harry as some sort of footballing deitythose of us that go to Fratton Park week in week out know that the support has been split between those that forgive him for going to Southampton and those that don't. It took succesive top ten finishes and an FA cup win to finally persuade most of the Harry haters that maybe it was time to forgive and forget but there were a few die-hards who continued to go against the grain-it seems they were right.

He said he wouldn't take over from Garham Rix as manager, he lied.

He said he would never go to Southampton, he lied.

He said he would never come back to Portsmouth, he lied.

He said the Pompey job would be his last in football, he lied.

I am grateful for the success he has brought us and the recognition that he has brought to our city, but I wouldn't trust him any further than I could throw him. Tony Adams may not have the experience and charisma that Harry had but at least we have a united club once again.

They had no option in the matter. As it stands Spurs are just not that big a club and therefore they're unlikely to hold onto players such as Berbatov and Keane when the likes of Man U and Liverpool come knocking. It was clear Berbatov wanted out ages ago and nothing was going to stop him so to be honest they should have sold him for good money early in the summer and actively sought a proper replacement rather then end up short after the end of the transfer window.

It's annoying how the larger clubs can cherry pick players like they do but sadly it's a fact of life in the 'Champions League' era.

I was firmly in the camp that a crap team was 90% down to the players and 10% the manager. It does not matter who the manager is, a good player is still a good player. I am being forced to rethink my veiws now that Ramos has gone , they seem like a different team over the last 2 games to the team that I saw against Stoke and in the UEFA cup.

I'm not sure it's that easy to assign such a proportion anyway. It varies from team to team and from game to game. You have to look at the players bought and sold, team selection, substitutions, tactics, training methods and team morale, all of which are greatly influenced by the manager. Put me in charge of a top Premier League team and I think you'd see them suffer a lot more than 10%. Smile

Regardless of who Ramos sold, I still believed Spurs had the players to be sitting in mid-table, at least.
