EDI Mini Meet 25/26 October...the Aftermath

Mon Oct 27, 2008 4:24 am

Finally back home after 18 hours of travel. Next time I hear one of our executives talking about how the planes just aren't full I'll invite them along on one of my jaunts!  rotfl

Left EWR on flt 36 Thursday night riding the jumpseat as I figured. Not the most comfortable way to cross the pond but the flight deck crew made it interesting and I think we all learned a little bit about each others jobs and maybe got some ideas that can help both groups. TAF for the eta didn't look so hot and a sigment for turbulence was issued by Shanwick control not too long before we got close to the coast but that all fell apart and it was a beautiful arrival with the sun shining and the wind straight down the runway. I got to my hotel with no problem and since I didn't get any sleep on the plane took a nap. That afternoon I took a walk down Princes Street and then caught the bus to Leith to look over the HMS Britannia. Got there a little late and it was closed for the evening. The meet started off in good fashion with a drink at the Hilton and dinner at Merkats with NightHawk, David L, and myself. Mty332 and LHRjc showed up round 10 or so after delayed flights and bumpy landings. We went out to a pub and closed it down heading back in around midnight.

Saturday the wind was way up and the rain was coming down in sheets. We tried to visit the castle but near the top were turned away by staff as evidently when the wind speed rises above 53mph they shut the place down. Seemed awfully silly to me since I was in a hurricane with winds over 80 mph the month before. So the decision was made to amend the walking plans and to go to see Concorde at the aviation museum. A beautiful plane being taken care of out in the middle of nowhere. Then it was back into town and since we had time and indoor things seemed to be on order for the day, made the tour of the Queens Yacht. Not bad, a beautiful ship that served her owners well. Dinner at the shopping mall next to the yacht and then back to town and drinking at a pub called Tron. Not a bad little place, pretty girls and funny Halloween costumes for both sexes to look at. I highly recommend the seats next to the stairs that go down to the toilets. You'll get to see the whole crowd that way.

Left EDI this morning on CO flt 37, which was out 10 early . Seat 2F, that's business first for those of you not in the know, on a CO 757. Never did get the ship number. Arrived on time due to headwinds and spent 3 hours looking for a way to IAH. Finally departed EWR for MSP with a seat on an expressjet and transferred to flt 2965 and the jumpseat on a fully booked flt from MSP to IAH. Got into IAH just after 8pm local. A long day of flying indeed. Can't find my SD adaptor card, Gavin, do me a favor and look around the floor of your car. So I will have to wait until tomorrow to post any pictures. Lots of good ones.

Will do - glad you made it home safely. How full was your EDI-EWR flight in the end?

I was a bit apprehensive about barging in on a bunch of people who seem to know each other but I must say it was a good laugh, especially the Saturday. I think RJdxer is right - that pub puts you in a good mood very soon after you walk in the door.  Smile

I skipped the earlier activities on the Saturday because, as I pointed out, if I want to wander around Edinburgh in atrocious weather, I have plenty of other opportunities to do so. And wouldn't you know it - we've got glorious sunshine and only a light breeze today.  grumpy

I even managed to survive a very brief discussion with Nighthawk about Scottish independence. At least, I think I did. Did anyone see him writing anything in a little black book? I also got confirmation that MYT332 is a trainspotter in spite of his protestations here to the contrary. I don't understand it myself.  angel

All in all, I'm glad I didn't chicken out - cheers, guys.

It was while we were explaining 1603 and 1707 to RJdxer. It was very brief. More specifically, I made a couple of comments and survived... apparently.  Smile

I'd probably have gone too far in an in-depth discussion and might not have been here to talk about it.  Smile

I know the weather was bad but did you actually make it to the airport for a bit of spotting. Or was the point of the trip to meet in EDI and get bladdered?

Sounds like everyone had fun. Hope Myt332's landing onboard his Dash8 wasn't too horrific

Failed on both counts - unless the others managed either (or both) on Sunday.

Quoting Nighthawk (Reply 3):

I could have but I thought you were all setting off at different times throughout the day. Ah well, next time.

All rows in the back had window and aisle pax so that's why I decided to bite the bullet and move up to BF even though the highway rob....departure tax goes up accordingly.

We did that from the HMS Britannia. Why stand in a field outside LHR with a blanket wrapped around you when you can stand on the deck of the Queens yacht with a multitude of bars within a minutes distance? I have a pictures of one on final with Nighthawk actually smiling!  bigthumbsup

You can drop it in the package with the hoodie sweat shirts I will order for my daughter. I'll send along enough to cover the tops and the postage to get it here.

OK here goes.....

A nice Thursday night at EWR.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02441.jpg

Getting ready to coast in to EDI

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02443.jpg

Arriving EDI. The crew were a great bunch. My thanks to them for a nice flight.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/edi01.jpg

I guess you know you're in Scotland when.....

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02472.jpg

The next day a happy but already soggy lot.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02494.jpg

This was a close to the castle as we got. Turned away because of a little breeze.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02505.jpg

So it was off to Concorde.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02552.jpg

Nighthawk brought his girlfriend with him.

LHRjc and Mty332 touring Concorde.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02525.jpg

Outside it was Comet and Vulcan. Neither getting the attention of Concorde.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02556.jpg

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02563.jpg

Then it was off to see the HMS Britannia. Nothing like using the Queens yacht to spot from!

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02582.jpg

I'm still not sure what it is but it's definitely elaborate.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02597.jpg

The Queens bouncers!

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02669.jpg

After a hard minutes worth of bouncing you need a beer in the wardroom.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02676.jpg

David L joined the group for the pub crawl to Tron Saturday night.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02715.jpg

Descending into EWR on the way back. Fall colors are out in force!

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f294/DrHansZarkov/edi%20meet%202008/DSC02736.jpg

Thanks again for a lot of fun. Next time maybe the weather will cooperate a little more but still a trip more than worth the effort. It was my pleasure to meet David, James, and Alex and hope to see them again sometime soon. Also good to get with Gavin again. Next time though let's try Concorde in Barbados so we can at least spend an afternoon at the beach as well! JRadier, see what I'm drinking? You could have had one too! Speedbirdie has ducked me yet again. Guess we weren't    enough guys.    Someday.

Well 45knot winds in a Turboprop, have a guess! Thankfully I'd had a few to drink before hand so I found it all rather fun!

It's the ships bell and binnacle! They Royal Family always got their group photos taken there hence why I suggested it. An example is here.

T'was a fun weekend though, even the 56mph wind and driving rain on Saturday was amusing. Well it was for me but I'm strange..

So that's what we are supposed to call it!  laughing

No joke. I still can see the blonde clear as day. It's tough to beat a smile like that. You missed the waitress at the grill at Britannia. Although Gavin may disagree she was also a high scorer.

Quoting David L (Reply 16):
Thanks for that image.

She had an inner beauty, as they say!  rotfl

Saw Gavins room, nice, but I bet you didn't get a little rubber duckey to play with in the bath tub like I did in mine! Hence the difference in price!

I think we were all happy to have had a chance to go onboard and look around. It would have been fun to ride, David L you're a lucky man.

Nice pics, even if due to the torrential rain and 56mph winds I look rather bedraggled in them all.

All in all a fun weekend, was nice to see some new faces as well as the old. Thankfully after easyJet scared the crap out of me by texting me to tell me my flight would leave 1 hour earlier than scheduled, it turned out to be a false alarm due to the fact they hadn't changed their clocks... quality!

PS Where's the picture from the castle with the "Guess Who" person in  Smile

I won't ask how you knew that. She only spoke about three words. But I guess that's all you would guys would need. It would take me a little longer. All the different accents in such a small area has always amazed me in regards to the UK. Since I don't speak French, am only learning Spanish, and don't know any other language I wonder if there is a country the size of the UK where so many different accents happen in such a small area?

I sat next to a nice Scottish gentleman on the flight back who was kind enough to go into detail about the political relationship between Scotland and England. Between him and what you folks were able to provide you filled in a lot of gaps. I must confess, as you already know, I had a great misconception about the relationship which was exposed several times during the meet. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

Speed boxes, I've mentioned them to several people over here and they all agree, the first Friday night about 2 am, most would be shot off their poles.  rotfl  In addition the empty vans? They would be stripped carcasses by morning. rotfl  rotfl
