Fox - yes Fox - has just called OHIO for Obama.

Obama has won NY, Minn and Wisc, so (excluding Ohio) he has 171. Ohio would take him to 191.

The Pacific coast states - and Hawaii - would take him to 268. Just two to go. If RI goes with him (4), that would be enough, but there's still Florida.

Georgia has gone to McCain ... oh, and ND too.

With 50 percent of the vote counted, CNN says that Obama leads in Florida, 52 percent to 48 percent for McCain. If Obama wins in Florida, and with Pennsylvania already going for him, I think he wins the Presidency. bigthumbsup

Obama's still 4% ahead in North Carolina, too, with 40% counted. Rhode Island called for him, as you'd expect.

I figure Obama will get 50-51% of the general vote and probably 290-300 electoral votes in
the end. McCain needs to pickup a Blue State and there's not many of those left. I'm sure
there will be a couple of lawsuits, my guess is that Ohio would be one of them.

Obama now has Ohio and Pennsylvania.

The networks put 200 electoral votes firmly in his column (to McCain's 90).

In addition to that 200, Obama is guaranteed all of California's 55 votes, plus 7 from Oregon, 4 from Hawaii and 11 from Washington state.

200 + 55 + 7 + 11 + 4 = 277

I expect the networks to call it earlier than in previous years!

As I see it, always assuming that Obama wins all the states that Kerry won, Ohio tips the balance. Kerry finished with 252 electoral votes, Ohio will take Obama to 272 (270 needed).

On top of that, Obama is still in with a good chance in Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. And, according to the pre-election opinion polls, Colorado and New Mexico (both won by Bush last time) are likely to walk into Obama's stable as well.

On the face of it, it'll probably be 'all over bar the shouting' in an hour or so.

ABC news and the rest now calling Ohio for Obama. That will just about do it.

Congratulations to Sen. now President elect Obama. Hopefully he will see the error of his ways before he tries to implement some really bad economic policies but, unlike some from the other side have maintained about our current President. President Obama will my President.

This election has pretty much ended the United Sates as the Founders envisioned it. We are now, by virtue of this election, no longer a nation that says that all persons are born with equal and unalienable rights, but after that it is up to the individual to make the most of their life. We are now a nation still born with equal and unalienable rights, but starting now we will be depending on the government to insure that those rights are carried equally through our entire lives.

Two quotes come to mind on this night.

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

We are obviously past the 200 year mark but the public has realized that they can vote someone in who will give them everything they want. With the large majorities in Congress the day of completely loose fiscal policy is upon us.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

We are at the apathy turning to dependence stage. How long it will be before we end up in fiscal bondage is anyones guess but considering how deeply we are in debt as a nation now, I would be suprised if the baby boomer generation made it through retirement and into the grave without seeing a total financial collapse of the government.

But those are arguments for tomorrow and beyond. Tonight, congratulations to President Elect Obama. Best wishes for a good 4 years.

This is expected. If you looked at the county-by-county results, all the rural Republican counties were tallied 80-100% very quickly, The DC area was announced very late...and it is still under 50% reporting.

It's over. I'll eat my crow now for my post a few months ago, as opposed to later this evening when I'll be tipping back a few to dull this one.

A few things before I set out for the night.

1) Nice job, blue America. Yeah, I'm sure you all have visions of your government handouts in the mail right now. At what economic cost? It will be heavy and it will be very severe. Health care, energy costs, oil prices, high school level economics books, food prices, jobs, and taxation levels are all quite interrelated.

2) John McCain should go out and apologize to every Republican personally for the shitty way his campaign has been run. His campaign and McCain himself was weak and ineffective -- reach across the aisle my ass. That's one thing you won't see Pelosi or Harry Reid do over the next four years. This RINO never should have been nominated, and if it wasn't for the Dope from Hope (Huckabee), Romney would've won this election easily. Go back to Arizona and lay in the sun for a month.

3) Partially, it is good that McCain and the elitist, liberal wing of the Republicans are taking a beating tonight. I think its a good wake-up call for the GOP, although my question is at what price for the country?

4) Lets give a warm round of applause to the mainstream media. They were finally able to get one of their own elected after their failures of promoting Gore and Kerry. You simply cannot discount a media that was actively routing for Obama, refusing to do basic research into his past, and could nary mount a criticism against him. He was the anointed one, most certainly.

5) I expect an Obama presidency to be everything I imagined (Jimmy Carter-esque failure) and more. I do hope I'm wrong, but I'm usually right. America: You chose him, have a great time.

I take virtually the opposite view, RJdxer. It's not their fault - the issue probably didn't even occur to them - but the Founding Fathers utterly contradicted themselves by leaving slavery in place; indeed, a high proportion of them owned slaves. And even though Emancipation in the 1860s, and Civil Rights in 1964, achieved a lot, they didn't entirely redress the balance.

For that reason I think that this electoral outcome is something that everyone in the United States can feel themselves extremely proud of. And I hope that it will lead on to true reconciliation, integration, and a genuine partnership between all the different races and ethnicities that make up the people of the USA.

So yes, congratulations to Obama. But warmest congratulations to ALL of you, as well.

What I wrote had nothing to do with race. The founding fathers owning slaves has little to do with the sprit of the Constitution or America as it has operated up till present. Have there been racial imbalances? Of course but the main stay of the country was that when you started out on your journey it was up to you to make the most of it. That ideal, as I see it, is now all but dead. The ideal now is that the government will be there to prop you up through your journey and to make sure that no one citizen gets too far in front of the rest.

The Obama presidency will be a disaster with a weak Carter-esque forgien policy, a Clintenese disregard for the miltary, a LBJ disregard for prudent economics, Schumers neo-nazi 2nd amendment policies and Mondales space policy. You will see you first amendments rights taken away when bad legislations such as the miss-named "Fairness" doctrine is forced through congress without a proper vetting because of a veto-proof majority of idiots.

We will sink further into economic ruin as buisnesses and people flee the US for countries that won't have the oppressive taxes that will come on most Americans to pay for programs to support deadbeats, illegal immigrants and crack addicts.

I don't think he'll be able to..The economy is so bad that even some of his advisors were wondering whether they could pull those plans of his off. Obama is naive on the economy, but I doubt the people advising him are that bad.

Al Qaida is very happy and I expect us to be attacked within a year. They know Obama will do nothing. Our taxes will go up at least 10% and when Obama's health care system fails and most of the businesses move to India and Malasia to get away from the heavy tax burden the Dems will put on them we will definately be in a bad way.
