SXM Meet: June 2009

In the thread Meets 2009 a few people mentioned they wanted to have an SXM meet this summer, additionally former member Trekster wishes to go to SXM for his birthday - so why not get the ball rolling and combine the two!

Anyone fancy an a.net meet, over the week of 10th June? Either the weekend before/after, or for the hardcore - the whole week!

Our vacation bid is later this month. My first week will be for the LHR meet weekend as it's my wife and I's wedding aniversary time. She's always wanted to see Kennsington Palace and Dianna's grave site so we will be trying to combine the two. Second week is mine to do with as I choose so I will bid for this. Until we know for sure I will leave my name on the maybe list.

Oh I would love to go and be part of the meet. I will add myself as tentative considering that it's still a ways away. Maybe I can hop up to Barbados and see Concorde too or find some kind of triangle air fare?

I hope accomodation prices are not too sky high near where the airport is and Maho Beach area.

Trent and I are planning a Thailand holiday next June, and my last exam in school is on the 8th June.

If it turns out we can't make Thailand, then we'll look at coming to SXM for the meet Smile

Expedia quotes around £700 with Air France, so much as I'd love to go to SXM (and have the chance to laugh at trekster getting ridiculously drunk on his birthday), I figure it's more than slightly out of range for a broke student based in the UK. Big grin

Since meets like this are so far from everyones home, generally speaking, it's usually more like the entire week or at least 5 days and people come and go as their schedule dictates.

It is only a bit unusual to use the Wednesday of a week for scheduling an A.net meeting.
Seeing that it is only 3 hours flying time from MIA and around 4 hours from ATL / NYC, it can be assumed that some people might want to head to SXM over a weekend only, but then there the weekend before and the one after the 10th of June to choose from.

Speaking for myself, I was looking into staying only a few nights on St. Maarten and then head to some other place in the Carribean (or to make it a side-trip from a trip to the U.S.).

well which one of those can you make? I am flexible and can make both, so theres no point picking one. Why not wait until someone comes along that can only make one of those weekends, then we will pick that weekend.

I was wondering if this was the reason why a Weds had been chosen

AF flies the A340 daily, KLM doesn't fly the 747 but the MD-11 (twice weekly, one of them on thursday IIRC) and Corsair flies there on Sunday

I thought KLM flew the 747 into SXM now instead of the MD11. Never mind, they're both nice aircraft.

Saturday's usually the best day for traffic. Mid week is usually pretty quiet. When I've been i've tended to arrive friday, shoot the crap out of sat and sunday and then chill for the rest of the time. Mid week can literally have just 2 heavy arrivals (757 size) in a day.

Clubbing in St. Maarten....hmmm.....i think you might be a little disappointed on that one. This is the Caribbean afterall.

Fortunately there is a club (Bliss) as such, just behind the Sunset Beach Bar, as long as you understand you wont get the typical UK/Euro club music...more of an Hip hop flavour, and don't expect it to be open every night. Oh and not forgetting the strip joint a shortish walk from Maho beach if that's your thing. I seem to remember Bamboo Bernies (again behind the SSBB) running a night or 2 as well with a much more euro flavour, but again this is hit n miss as it was pretty much shut down when i was there in Oct 07.
I guess you could try Philipsburg, but just don't expect to get back the same night, more the next day, public transport aint exactly readily available come nighttime (when i say public transport I mean the local mini bus).

I prefer to spend the evenings supping on endless supplies of cold beer instead at the SSBB into the small hours in the warm breeze with good company, and the sound of the waves rolling in, aahhh blisss...

clubbing or not clubbing, it doesnt matter, we got some beginner band playing the best of pop music carribean style last year and if you connect it with the proper alcohol, its good.

as for traffic I believe Sunday is the best, or it was in spring 2007, when I visited

Ah man, if you're talking about the SSBB that's most likely to be Percy Rankin and the Bonfire Band....they rock!!!

As for me attending......it's a maybe for now. The Maho is somewhat pricier than normal, even for a supersaver room. I was paying £67/night in 2007 and it's currently on Expedia at £137 a night for June 09...ouch!

I just checked airfares out of some northeast airports ...airfares aren't bad.

If you book some combination packages (hotels/airfares ... and the hotel criteria is 4 stars out of 5 and no more than 2 miles from Princ. Juliana) ... you're looking at roughly $1,200 from Hartford, $900 from Providence, $700 from Boston, $700 from New York Kennedy.

Not too shabby.
