High School Students: What Classes Do You Have?

Tue Nov 11, 2008 8:47 pm

Since there is already a thread for college students I made this one for high school students. So what classes do you have?

My classes (1st term):
1st hour-Body Shape and Tone (kind of like gym)
2nd hour-Auto Shop
3rd hour-German
4th hour-Science

2nd term:
1st hour-Physical Education
2nd hour-Drivers Ed
3rd hour-German
4th hour-Science

My classes are more than a hour long which is why I don't have many classes.

Also doing IB but only 10th grade next year I will have to choose higher and lower level. However this is what I foresee:

Higher Level:
English A1
German A2
Chemistry or Biology (depending on which I perform better in, I'm leaning towards Chem)
History or Geography (leaning to History)

Standard Level:
English
Biology or Chemistry (probably Bio)
Maths
Possibly Economics
and TOK (Theory of Knowledge as it is compulsory)

I've been through the IB Bio/Chem curricula.. Just my point of view, I'd rather do HL Bio and SL Chem. Maybe it's because I like Bio a lot more, but chem at HL level is going to be rough.

I go to a really good grammar school, so it is expected that we do at least 4 AS. I do GCSE Chinese in my free periods. Anyway, I can handle the work of it all together. I won the prize for best in year for Biology, which I am really pleased about (I have never won anything like that before), but again, A level is a big jump in difficulty. I can cope with the homework, but there is always something to do. I have for instance a 500 word essay which I am doing at the moment about Public Transport in Spain vs. Public Transport in England, I have got to find out about the history of the periodic table, and do a load of practise tests for chemistry, I have to revise about the heart, circulatory system, gas exchange in Mammals, cellular membranes, exocytosis and endocytosis for Biology and a 3 page essay about the causes and impacts of population aging in the UK and a 6 page essay on the social, political and economic causes and impacts of flooding in an area - the hardest of all because there is nothing to say, both for geography. Plus I have to sort out my presentation for my chinese oral... Fun! :P

Oh yeah I've heard that a lot. Is it true that Chemistry is among the hardest higher subjects that you can take? At my current and previous school most ex-students find this to be true. My borther did very well on his IB getting 42/45 and he did higher physics and got a 6 but I think that was mostly due to his interest in the subject and eagerness to work. I'm hoping this will apply to me as well but I will think long and hard to decide. Thanks for the advice!

I hate chemistry with a passion (well, anything outside biochemistry), so I would never do that. I've heard that SL chemistry isn't that hard. I personally think Biology is harder than chemistry.. it's more memorizing and understanding (often difficult) concepts, whereas I view chemistry more like math: when you figure out how to do it, it's not that difficult to remember how to keep doing it.
Try going to the IB website and viewing practice exams for HL Chemistry and Biology, and see which ones you think you'd better better prepaid for and/or which ones you would enjoy more.

From what I have heard from friends is that Chemistry is much much harder then Maths HL, and could possibly be rated as the hardest subject to take in IB after Maths HL
