Seven simultaneous attacks with guns at hotels (and such places?).

Ten people killed and 20+ seriously wounded.

No info about terrorists (yet).

well, given the situation in India, probably some religious extremists.... be it Muslim or Hindu (not that it matters with extremism which particular flavour it is)

Hindu extremists tend to go after concentrations of other religions - Mosques, Churches and are generally happier burning things down. Co-ordinated attacks at multiple locations suggest Qaeda-influenced perpetrators using terrorism as a blow against India as a whole. Unfortunately, the Indian public may be getting tired of all this and vote in a right-wing Government.

Glad to know you're ok Mel. The attacks have happened at several places I used to frequent - Nepean Sea Road (former residence) and Colaba (school).

The attacks are directed against high visibility targets, not religious establishments. These are unlikely to be Hindu jokers, who simply do not attack these kinds of places, but just take their greviances out on some Muslim ghetto. They also lack sophistication to do bombings or small arms attacks. These are professional terrorists.

Several Jews were reportedly killed at Nariman House, which has been a popular residence for Israeli/Bene Israeli community. The 5-star Taj Mahal hotel is another location where attacks are going on, and a number of British/American citizens are apparently being held hostage.

The current Indian government is an accursed bunch of pussyfooting terrorist sympathizing bastards. The sooner these assholes are thrown out the better  Angry

This is the 1st time...Armed terrorists with automatic weapons are moving around firing at civilians.Earlier the terror attacks were planting of explosives.

Mumbai is a 24x7 city that never sleeps....This attack is a very serious attack, very planned & looks like aimed at UK/US nationals.

Hoping the cops/commandos can control the situation Fast.

Its Night out here & that complicates the situation.

Personally.....Its Anger & hurt among the local citizens.

I don't think so.The group involved is already known to the cops but not declared publically as yet.
Also a top Encounter cop has been seriously injured too.

This is the toughest battle Mumbai faces against terror ever till date.

This battle has to be won & it will.....The problem is how many more casualties before it ends.Daylight would help.

Considering how widespread in the city the attacks have been, the I think that targeting of US/EU nationals looks more like an afterthought to extract more mileage out of the situation that was already dire. Unfortunately these folks who were in these hotels probably came handy as easy targets for the terrorists.

Terrorist gunmen attack Mumbai's tourist areas, killing scores and reportedly seeking British and American targets.

Indian television channel NDTV is reporting 40 western hostages held at the luxury Trident Hotel and others held at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel.
Gunmen have targeted luxury hotels, a popular tourist attraction and a crowded train station in at least seven attacks across India's financial capital.

Since the group escaping in the Black skorda & The Trident eliminated, that leaves the terrorists hiding in the Taj left.

I used to stay at the Oberoi and the slightly cheaper Oberoi Towers (right next door to each other) at least once every couple of weeks, and I usually saw air crews at the Towers. They are connected though by a long corridor, and I have not heard anything that indicates that the terrorists have taken over both buildings or not - they just talk about "the Oberoi", which is a usage usually reserved for the higher-priced section.

My prayers for all the victims and for the police and troops that are going in to face down these fanatics.

It brings a lump to my throat to see the Taj Mahal hotel on fire. It is 105 years old, and was constructed by Jamsetji Tata, the scion of the Tata business conglomerate (the ones who bought Corus and Jaguar/Land Rover). He was offended that the British refused him entry into a hotel in his own country and decided to build one himself that would be grander than any of those he was denied entry to. It isn't just a hotel, but a priceless heritage site.

Please join me in showing solidarity for the people of Mumbai affected by this senseless act. There are still hostages being held in the two five star hotels that came under attack. This could be London, or New York or Sydney or your hometown. The member list of this group will ultimately be sent to the Indian Prime Minister's Office to show our support for the people of Mumbai. You may also send this to your friends only if you genuinely care for the cause!

Is it known who was responcible for that? Were they ever found or identified?

A huge amount of arms and ammo was found on a boat anchored at the Mazgaon docks. Seems that these attacks were better prepared than first thought.

"The terrorists are reported to have escaped towards Vidhan Bhawan, a very sensitive area. The police has also seized a boat at Mazgaon dock, which is reported to contain huge amounts of arms and ammunition."

New reports claim Taj Mahal hotel encounter has ended, and that terrorists have been killed by commandos. About 150 people evacuated from hotel by Indian Army. News items indicate that authorities refused to negotiate and instead focussed on counter-terrorist action despite the risk of casualties.
