The Blues

Sun Dec 07, 2008 12:32 am

What can I say, I got the blues. Money trouble, woman problems, people that done me wrong, even the sky is cloudy all day. If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all.
On the other hand, as I was listening to a blues song in which this guy was bemoaning that his blue jeans all have holes in them, and as I looked down at the big gaping holes in my own jeans I thought "I can relate to that". Unfortunately, so can a lot of other people these days. Well,
BB King feels our pain
. And so do ZZTop and Vieux Farka Toure and many others. So grab your cheapest beer, sit down and show us the music you listen to when you're down.

Nothing like some Allman Brothers or Howlin' Wolf for me.

I'm going through something similar. I like 'In Memory of Elizabeth Reed' a lot at the moment...

Hopefully they'll clear up. But I find a beer never really helps.

The blues are for the birds (ha)! Just follow the simple rule: Never apologize for wanting to be happy. And never feel guilty for putting yourself first. And if that means loving some blues, then so be it.

I listen to Bruce Springsteen. "One Step Up, 2 Steps Back"

"When I look at myself I don't see, the man I wanted to be...Somewhere along the line I slipped off track. One step up and 2 steps back..."
I love dem planes....

When I'm feeling depressed, I usually listen to the following tracks:

"Away From the Sun" 3 Doors Down
"Breath" Breaking Benjamin
"Don't Belong" Cold
"Weak and Powerless" A Perfect Circle

Then once I'm feeling a little better, I move onto more "neutral" songs by artists like P.O.D., Tom Petty, Chevelle, Linkin Park, etc.

Back when I was an undergrad and felt it a bit more often, I actually had a playlist I used to put on (yeah, sad, I know) which gradually changed in mood from downright depressing to moderately cheerful. It took about two hours or so, but by the end I'd usually be in a better mood.
Have you ever felt like you could float into the sky / like the laws of physics simply don't apply?

What's sad about that? That's exactly what I do. Start with the depressing music, then work my way to songs "neutral" in mood, and then eventually upbeat songs again. It works like a charm.

While it's obviously not true blues, I did just go see AC/DC last night.

And my neck, shoulders, back, legs, and voice are all paying for it today. But it's all worth it.

They have some seriously bluesy stuff, especially on the last 2 albums. Just good old blues-influenced straight-ahead no-frills rock and roll.

They slowed some song tempos down on this tour. And that makes the songs groove even harder. The pocket was gigantic, and the rhythm section (Phil Rudd, Cliff Williams, Malcolm Young) are as tight as ever.

And it's hard not to be happy when you're listening to AC/DC.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".
