Shoes Thrown At President Bush - Video

Sun Dec 14, 2008 8:01 pm

On his unannounced visit to Iraq...one of the reporters hurled shoes at GW Bush.

Talk about the security lapse....I wonder what else could have happened!!

Sorry, how is there any security lapse in this? I'm thinking pretty well every one in that room was wearing shoes, doesn't take much to take them off and throw them at someone. You can protect people such as the President from some things, but you can't protect him from human nature and their emotions.

Personally, I thought the video was quite amusing

It centainly serves as a wake up call of how easy it can be to have access. This is a blessing in disguise for incoming Obama who has many "racist" enemies in the US.

But I'll say one thing for Bush.He never hid for any issues, including saying goodbye to our men and women in color.

next security procedure: no shoes in aircraft cabin, can only be stowed in hold baggage.

What I'm surprised at is secret service officers didn't quite make their presence felt after the incident. As soon as the first shoe was thrown....they should have been surrounding Bush and pushing him to the floor. What if the second object was not a shoe but something that could really hurt him?

Other than that....I was ROFTL after watching the video.

Assumption ahead: Being that it was a pretty crowded room, I would not be surprised if as soon as the first shoe was thrown that agents were already working to get to the man. Furthermore, if you notice after the man is in custody there were something like a half dozen agents surrounding him and the other speaker.

The guy threw both shoes in about 2 seconds, I would think the secret service would have to pretty well be standing touching shoulders with GWB in order to react any faster.

Access for who

To the POTUS.There was very poor security screen to protect him that serves as a warning.
At least someone in the front row looking at the core of reporters.

Quite the leap you made there PSA53. I didn't see the word or any inference to "hero" in Scrubbs' post.

Anyway, isn't freedom of expression great? With all the shit he's pulled in the last 8 years, Bush should feel like a heel. Gotta give him credit, though. His reflexes were pretty good.

Yup! Seems like he still does not understand what he has done!

The fact that hitting/beating-up with a shoe is considered, in many cultures, one of the most degratory things that can be done to a person, says a lot about what some (many?) people think of Bush. I am in no way condoning the actions of the reporter...but for me it does drive the point home as to how unpopular Bush's past actions have been.

Bush handled it with remarkable grace. I guess afterwards he said That was a size 10 shoe he threw at me, you may want to know."

Good for the President, to handle it with a sense of humor. Nice try by Talibani to deflect the shoes.

If it is justified...then by all means! Bombing the Taliban back to stone-age after 9/11 was justified...Iraq is not ! But that is another topic on its own.

Back on topic: it was quite hilarious how Bush dodged the first shoe tho! I wonder how he figured out the size  Confused

Pretty much nailed it on the head.

After watching the video I’m shocked at the SS response, or lack there of. What if the shoe throwing was a distraction for someone else to harm the president? Probably would have worked as about 5 SS agents and about a dozen reporters all focused on the shoe thrower, while the president was left seemly to fend for himself.

It's almost a symbolic act of closure, and it was most likely intended to be exactly that. The symbolic "stoning of the devil" is an integral part of the pilgrimage to Mekkah every muslim is supposed to undertake at least once in their lives. I would be quite surprised if many muslims didn't see this (fortunately harmless) event in that context.

Even though the act itself is 'sole-less', the guy had pretty good aim! Bush was quick, light on his toes, appears he saw it coming.

The Secret Service did their job. Watch the video again. You can see Bush tell agents that it was ok. If they had dove on him, it could have created panic. I think the situation was well handled. It is not the first high figure to have things thrown at him/her.

Huh? Using that logic if the President had been shot at and the President immediately said “I’m Okay”, the SS would be okay to back off because the President said so? I couldn’t care less what the POTUS said, the SS is paid to protect him, give him cover, escort him away, then sort it out later. No they did not do their job.

As I'm fairly convinced, by most definitions in use today, Bush and his administration could successfully be convicted of war crimes, a couple of shoes is getting off lightly. I suppose Obama has little to gain by launching an action against the outgoing administration, but it would be a good message to send, helping to restore credibility to the US internationally.
