Facebook Bans Breast-feeding Photographs

Tue Dec 30, 2008 12:31 pm

Facebook bans breast-feeding photographs

Excerpt from article:

Facebook said the pictures violate the company's policy on obscene, pornographic or sexually-explicit material, because of the display of the aureola - the dark skin around the nipple. Reportedly, it had also threatened to terminate accounts of people who do not comply with such policy.

"We agree that breast-feeding is natural and beautiful, and we're very glad to know that it is so important to some mothers to share this experience with others on Facebook," said Facebook spokesman Barry Schnitt.

The company insists it is not about obscenity, but more about safety. The policies are to ensure the site remains safe, secure and trusted by its users, who also include teenagers.

I don't see how breast-feeding is in anyway, obscene, pornographic, or sexually explicit... there are mass protests against this on Facebook and my guess is that this ban will be lifted shortly.

I agree that it shouldn't be banned....however, it begs the question as to why someone would want to post such a photograph anyways!

Well, they are just saying it is not allowed to have naked pictures of people. That's pretty simple. It is not wrong to be naked in general, but facebook does have a pretty clear rule about pictures. Does it matter why you are naked, not really.

There are far worse examples of inappropriate content throughout Facebook and I find this particular attack on breastfeeding mothers ridiculous.

While I don't particularly care one way or another whether it's band, WHY would you post a photo of yourself breast-feeding???

Am I missing something?

Lots of new mothers struggle with breast feeding and look to various groups on Facebook for support. It is natural for these individuals to share successful moments with friends and family... and let's not forget, it's a normal and natural process...

Not sure why people get so offended by breast feeding... most of us were breast fed too!

OK, well thanks for the explanation. But Facebook does have a pretty clear photo upload policy. Oh well.

Considering some of the images I have seen on Facebook, it would appear this policy is not enforced across the board.

I was never breast fed. People look at me in horror when I tell them that.

Anyway, women breast feed in public all the time, and once in a while, you see a bit of areola if you look hard enough. Who cares? It's just a boob. Men have them too! I'd really like to meet the people who are so outraged by seeing part of a breast. It's not like it's "Moms Gone Wild on Spring Break".

I would argue that the people who find breast-feeding 'pornographic' are the people we should be worried about.

Exactly... it's just a breast... who cares?

What are these uptight people supposed to teach their children? That breast feeding is naughty?

No doubt. You find more exposed breast in the Victoria's Secret catalogue. If people find a baby nursing "hot"... then they have other problems!

What's next? Guys posting pictures of them "cock-feeding" their girlfriend a protein shake??

"Why can't I post my pictures? She was hungry, we all need to eat to survive."

Maybe instead of taking and posting pictures of their kid giving them sloppy seconds, these mothers should be interacting with the kids. If a mother has enough class to post pictures of her titties on the internet, she's probably one of those "pregnancy pact" sluts and there's no father in the child's life.

Yes have seen far worse on profile pictures but that is for facebook to decide on. Some people may even find photos of their relatives, friends and colleagues intoxicated more offensive.

I can't stop laughing at your post. Sloppy seconds...breastfeeding? Comparing a baby being fed naturally by their mother to fellatio? Your sarcasm was hilarious.

You were kidding right?

To be fair, so is the act of making a baby. Morality is relative.

And no, I am NOT advocating the posting of actual porn be allowed on Facebook or MySpace or Bebo or anything.

Because breasts have been placed on a higher pedastal than a vagina.

I agree

I started up a German style shit-eating porn group on facebook and it's going strong, with several members, (including Cartman's Mum)

Yeah right...!  Wink

Let's face it, there is still a certain stigma associated with women breast feeding in public. And yes, I agree that it's a perfectly natural thing to do (although I will admit to being embarrassed beyond belief when my cousin decided to breast feed her son in a Pizza Hut in Cambridge...with me sitting opposite!), but why on earth would anyone want to post pictures of it on Facebook?? Next they'll be wanting to post photos of the conception, claiming that it's a thing of great joy and beauty, and perfectly natural (calm down Myt332)!!

News feeds, and lack of privacy controls. If I remember right, the first line of Zuckerberg's apology letter went something like 'We really messed this one up'.

They actually did come through on that one.

Besides which, Facebook is free. I don't really expect my voice to mean particularly much to the owners of the site. Nor do I particularly care.

Maybe that's just me, though.

LMAO... farcebook.com safe? They constantly make updates to the site that compromise personal security... when they decided to move facebook from campuses to the world they left everyone's security settings on the lowest level... you could search someones facebook by searching google and they would be none the wiser if they didn't check their settings.

I think this current move is nonsense... it's all about protecting their asses and not their clients.
