Your Favourite 2008 Memory

Thu Jan 01, 2009 12:23 am

So, the bells have just tolled midnight here in Ireland (and also Britain)
Happy New Year to all

So, I was wondering earlier what everyone's favourite memories of 2008 were.

Some of my favourite memories of 2008 include;

  • That Time I Got My Hair Done All 'Emo'
  • That Time I Inherited £21000 and decided I would live like a superstar
  • When I Asked My Friend Alistair If He'd Like To Have Lunch In London That Weekend

  • When I Took The Last BA B757-200 flight from Glasgow to London
  • When I Saw Gordon Ramsay on the day T5 at LHR opened
  • Having My First Date On The London Eye
  • The Time Trent flew back to London for the weekend, spending all that money, just to see me
  • When I Flew To Ireland atleast once a month for 6 months.
  • Meeting Tom and Jimmi, some of the best friends I could ask for
  • Manchester Meet 2008
  • Flying to London because I needed space
  • Flying into Berlin Tempelhof two weeks before it was closed
  • Going To See Pam Ann in London
  • Christmas with my boyfriend
  • And Of Course, New Year's Eve in Dublin

My goals for 2009

  • Dye My Hair Blonde
  • Get A New Hairstyle Every 3 months
  • Go To New York and Shop Till I Drop
  • Lose 20kg (3.1 Stone)
  • Get Help With And Get Over My Eating Disorder
  • Get A Real Tan

So c'mon, what are your favourite memories of 2008 and goals for 2009

Happy New Year! We still have a few hours here in Florida but I'm just relaxing for now, the guests aren't showing up til a bit later. Some of my favorite memories include:

-Graduating college, FINALLY!
-Going to DXB and DEL and see my best friends again after 4 years of not seeing them
-Camping in the middle of nowhere in the UAE with said best friends
-Being able to see my family anytime for the 4 months I lived in MIA
-Finally shaking off the remains of an off and on romance that lasted nearly 2 years

That's pretty much all of mine! It was a year of some great memories but also of some that I'd rather not remember.

Well, 2008 hasn't been the best year for me, but I guess the highlights have been:

My first trip to Dubai in January.
My first trip to Cappadocia, Turkey in late Jan/early Feb.
Flying on a KLM A330 from LHR to AMS in March.
A fun day seeing the first SQ A380 arrive at LHR in March.
A great weekend in Paris in April.
First contact with a damn good friend in early April...although his impression might be different!!
A good trip around the UK in May.
Another good trip to Dubai in July.
An interesting LHR meet in October.

I guess that's it...I'm not planning on sharing my plans for 2009 with anyone yet!!

Happy 2009 one and all!
Ladies & gentlemen this is Captain Tobias Wilcock welcoming you aboard Coconut Airways flight 372 to Bridgetown Barbados

2008 was filled with lots of breakthroughs and adventures in my life, but also tons of drama and stress. Off the top of my head these are the highlights:

-new (used) car
-awesome internship with CO living in Houston
-non-reved to London
-FINALLY lost my virginity, or got it stolen from me, still can't make up my mind on which...
-1st kiss too, and had a few others from different girls this year
-1st GF, and first ex  banghead
-graduated
-got an apartment to myself
-for the first time ever somebody considers me as a best friend
-set some other "friendships" straight
-nearly got involved with another woman but realized she was poisonous like my ex, i guess i am learning after all...

I've got several resolutions for '09, mainly involving women and how to find the sweethearts and avoid the poisonous ones, and ending this damned dry spell hopefully within a year of my last time, finishing my stupid CFI course, and getting a flying job, and a new computer, and other random stuff

Well, long story short, I'm glad to see 2008 gone. However, some good things did happen, including:

- made a new friend who is perhaps as big an aviation freek as I am (likely moreso).
- I now have a true best friend, at a time when I need one the most.

Quoting BAViscount (Reply 2):
An interesting LHR meet in October.

Indeed.

Hopefully, 2009 will see me:

- dust off the old logbook and start flying again.
- add more rating to my pilot certificate.
- do more traveling.
I lift things up and put them down.

EUROPE! Ooh, la-la what an adventure. Nothing topped 2008 like Europe did.

The vacation of a lifetime, especially seeing London (and getting attacked by hungry Canada geese at St. James' park), walking up to one of the Buckingham Palace guards, attempting conversation with one of them and failing miserably, and the big parties at Metra Nightclub, Cheers at Piccadilly and The Porterhouse near Covent Gdn. Also up there is winning £3,600 at the Gala Casino in Russell Sq.

What else is there? Oh yes! Paris! Walking along the Seine with a cutie from BOS, the New Oxford restaurant on Ave. De Clichy (tasty food, IMHO), MOULIN ROUGE and the dancing girls...and me forgetting my passport at the hotel, and having to convince the bouncer at O'Sullivans I am 18...thank God I brought my driver's license with me.

I think the only other good thing about 2008 was getting me contact lenses, and that's pretty much it.

Cheers and here's to a better 2009!

Memories of 2008 are:

My niece, Leonie, born on September 2nd, she is so beautiful,
My first EK flight,
My first 777 flight,
Being able to work in Cyprus and Malta this year, two places I wanted to visit.

Apart from my niece being born, it wasn't that much of a great year for me.

My goals for this year:

Loose a hell of a lot of weight,
Find somewhere of my own to live,
Find a nice little car next week as long as I pass a job assessment,
Get a job I really like,
Find a man I can settle down with,
Go to LAS for my 30th in December

So, I was wondering earlier what everyone's favourite memories of 2008 were.

Let's see, my highlights in 2008 were:

- The Werder Bremen vs. Borussia Dortmund football game. I've been there with a few friends and we had fun as hell, furthermore did we see 6 goals in the time-honored Weserstadion.

- My latest trip to Spain. I spent five days there with my best friend, we had great weather, ate great tasting food and made party every night.

- All of our draft-beer mission in the summer. It is a huge advantage to know the nephew of the local beverage dealer.

- M.V. (a good friend) became the local champion shot. A three day party followed.

- We reactivated the 2nd team of our local football club. I could spend all my Sundays elsewhere but I am always on the football field and I enjoy it very much.

- The most important one: I've not been sick in 2008 and I hope it stays that way in 2009!

Interesting thread...

...for me the memories were:

- Promoted to Captain in the US Air Force
- Celebrating my birthday in London (flying VS A346s both ways--my fave plane in my fave colors!)
- Separating from the Air Force (now a reservist) with great memories
- Finding a great job in the middle of a tough job market in a city I love
- Driving cross-country with my partner in a small Mustang convertible packed to the gills from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C.!
- Moving into DC, a fantastic city with tons of history, architecture and culture to keep me busy for years (and finding a place with parking included!)
- Giving a home to a lovable little cat (who is progressing in destroying the house bit by bit!)
- And just before the year got away I traded the old girl (the Mustang) for a new VW GTI!

Let's see what 2009 has in store...

-Mike asking me out. Perhaps.

Don't even need to think about this one. By and far my best memory of 2008 is sitting in the Roisin Dubh public house in Gurteen, County Sligo, Eire, with my partner and a good friend who lives in Ireland, listening to the traditional Irish Session, and getting to see the legendary Peter Horan playing live! That was an awesome night.

My youngest daughter and I were on my boat down on the Sea Cortez. It was a beautiful calm evening , no breakers just small rolling tide. The full moon was rising ahead of us and the sun was setting behind us as we made the 7 mile run down to esutary and the pick up point.

She was sitting on the front point of the boat , just having a blast ..smiling and laughing the whole time. Suddenly to the right I saw a pod of porpises beak water .. I cut throttles and pulled in behind them. We ended up running most of the way down with the pod swimming all around us and damn near jumping in the boat. My daughter was hanging over the side and nearly touching them as they swam by us ..

We anchored a while near the sand bars of the estuary and just watched the moon rise ..

My little girl and I were just in a very peaceful place ... her and I needed this, our relationship is strained by conflict sometimes. But that night , we were father and daughter in a very special place that will never be forgotten.

Was he out at the time or was it a surprise?

It happened to me when I was still in the Air Force, I ran into a Major at a gay club...then he started to hit on me!

Oh no. Like we all knew that he had to be gay, but he's not quite out. And he tried to get my fired shortly after I found out too. I transfered out here to Denver shortly afterwards, and just found out that he's not longer with the company *^^*

I would have to say:

My internship with the City of Philadelphia...
Christmas Day in New York City...
Posting my 2nd consecutive semester of straight "A"s at West Chester, only this semester I kicked off my pursuit of a MA degree in geography and planning. I'm starting that off with a very formidable 3.89 GPA!!! Big grin

Difficult!

Mercifully few downs, and quite a few high points.

Visiting the USA was quite something. I hadn't before left Europe for more than a day, and had never travelled on my own for any great distance, but I managed to collect quite a few memories in the short time I was there.
First 747 flight.
T5 (and meeting my first a.netter!).
Some of the great cities of the USA (NYC, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles) and some of the most amazing landscapes (MT, WA, CA, OR)
Crossing a country of that size on a bit of a great railway journey.
Driving through Yosemite (amazing), the Nevada desert (lonely, but unforgettable), and over the Hoover Dam.
Amazing people.

It's not really a memory so much as a beginning, but starting a postgraduate MA, and being able to move back to one of my favourite to do so, has been great.

Sorting out my life.

My favorite 2008 memory is of October 16, 2008, when I gave my first major scientific presentation to the whole dental school at UCSF.

The UCSF School of Dentistry puts on an annual Research and Clinical Excellence Day (formerly Research Day), in which selected students and faculty give oral presentations and lectures to the whole school, in a large lecture theatre/auditorium.

This whole summer (July-Sept. 2008) I had been studying the effect of hypoxia on chicken embryos. I found that embryos deprived of oxygen in ovo develop severe facial and brain anomalies characteristic of holoprosencephaly (a rare and often fatal disorder of embryonic forebrain/face development).

These findings were striking enough that my professor encouraged me to apply for a chance to give an oral presentation at the prestigious Research Day event in October this year. I submitted an abstract, and was accepted to do an oral presentation (12 minutes).

I gave my oral presentation, and found out later that my presentation won me first prize in the graduate student category for orals.

I'm going to New Orleans this April to present this work at a scientific meeting (my first one).

I plan to continue my work on hypoxic chick embryos and holoprosencephaly as part of my dissertation work for my doctorate. I also plan to publish it in the near future.

As you can see, I do some quite interesting, groundbreaking research in craniofacial embryology as a PhD student at UCSF.
