There is justice sometimes. Rot in hell. After all we have to worry about we have to waste our time with these people. I wish those vessels could be armed with some heavy metal so each time they approached the captain could just cut them in half with a few thousand rounds. Good target practice.

I would generally agree with you. But there is a good reason why cargo ships don't carry small arms, apart from maybe a pistol in the captain's cabin. The crews on these ships are not the best-paid people in the world and are often from pretty poor parts of the world themselves, and the cargo is always of value. What's to prevent them from shooting the officers and pirating the ship themselves?
Democrats haven't been this angry since we took away their slaves.

Why have the Somali's taken up being pirating? Many who did so were fishermen, but the dumping of dangerous wastes by western countries illegally in their fishing grounds as well as overfishing of those waters wiped out their primary source of income. Add to that Somali has no governence, a very poor country, faces civil wars in it, it is no wonder some took the decision to become pirates - it is about survival. Still, being a pirate is wrong and I have no problem with this group of pirates going 'to Davy Jones Locker' to use the old sea saying.
I hope the ransom is recovered and more efforts are made to both stop these pirates and to reduce the economic situations that led them to be pirates.

What you describe is how the piracy started, but once it was shown that the shipping companies would pay ransom and that there was a lot of money to be made, the warlords (read: organised crime thugs) moved in and took over. Today Somalia's piracy is a booming industry with pirates operating far away from their home waters, out in the middle of the Indian Ocean and as far south as Kenya and Tansania.
Theyare now well organised with a huge infrastructure in the background to organise manpower and guarding the hostages, to launder the ransom money, as well as using sophisticated modern equipment to find the targets.
The days when European fishing vessels illegally operating in Somali territorial waters were hijacked by a few AK-47 armed fishermen operating from their village's beach are long over.

Well, outsiders set up the fishing industry in Somalia during the 1970ies, Somalis didn´t fish too much before since they preferred meat over fish (they don´t eat lobster and such due to religious beliefs) and no storage was possible (meat was taken from animals kept alive and fresh slaughtered).Sweden, Denmark and UK was involved in those aid projects.

Third add the caveat.
Not picking on you personally, just that in todays world this seems to be the way intellectuals address things. The US just released their job loss figures, so first blame Mexico, China and third world countries for taking the jobs, then blame the US companies who don't care where the product is made as long as they make money, then say its wrong.
The same principle is used in todays current crime situations.
Nigeria has oil, they make a lot of money, they have problems, look at Zimbabwe, yes the colonial powers took advantage of these nations / contnents due to power, but problems existed before they arrived and exist after they left, the west did not introduce slavery to Africa, they just made it into a world wide economic industry. If as mentioned above, Somalis are not traditional sea food eaters, can we assume that these fishermen were in the business for export? Even if not the case, the majority of the country are not in the trade, whats the reason for the rest of the country not being improved?
I have problems with the way the UN approaches situations like this, but the world sure has ignored the situation for a long time, the US tried, lost some soldiers and gave up, is anyone else going to try?

Seems the owners paying those multi million dollar ransoms might consider travelling in convoys and hiring escorts, either the governemental ones or someone like Blackwater. Hey, if Blackwater can have their own air force, surely they can have their own navy too? I'm sure there's a few mothballed warships they can get their hands on...
