From my home to the airport the back way is 6 lights and three all-way stops. If I go the normal way the lights are uncountable. (Airport Blvd or Schillinger's Road in Mobile....eeek!)

Stopping of course for the red ones.

Sad thing is that 9 out of those 10 are usually red ...  Sad

I was kind of bored, so I took my usual route via google maps and from my place to YVR (about 450km) has around 70 lights.

Between my house and EXT, there is a grand total of 2 sets of traffic lights, which must be some kind of record for the UK. I live about 25 miles away.

About 8km from my house to TLS, and no traffic-lights (yet a few roundabouts; between 3 and 2 depending on route I take).

The closest airport to me is Troutdale (don't know the code). Between here and there are 12 and one crosswalk signal. From here to PDX are 13 if going simply to spot on Marine Drive, or 18 if going from here to the terminal. Here to HIO (where the airshows are) I don't have any clue. Maybe 30?

Technically 1 light in the 13mi/21km to the airport, but the way usually I take passes through 4.

I have two different ways I go to the airport (one is for weekends, one is for weekdays when the freeway traffic is pretty bad).

7 lights if I take the freeway.

About 20 lights if I take the side streets to the freeway (one exit on there).

Either way, it's a 15 minute drive.

From my office, it's 2 lights to the freeway; 8 lights if I take the side streets to the freeway (2 exits on there)

From my house to NWI, it's about 3 miles. There are 5 sets of traffic lights, plus another 6 signalised pedestrian crossings.
To STN, it's about 80 miles. There are 10 sets of lights, and another 8 signalised crossings.
I counted signalised roundabouts as one set of lights, even though you may pass one set at green and wait for the next at red 30m further on round...

From my house to my workplace 25 km away: one stop sign (where I have to make a right turn anyway), one traffic light (switched off at night), one left turn (where I might have to wait for opposing traffic), and two right turns. Total time to travel: 20-25 minutes (all country highway)

I live about six or seven miles by road from ISP. There are somewhere between 12 and 15 traffic lights in that distance. Keep in mind that more than half the distance is on the highway with no lights.

Exactly identical for me (24km to YYZ) where it is one light going there and 3 coming back.

On my normal route up there, I probably pass somewhere between 20 and 30 traffic lights.

Quoting Zkpilot (Reply 9):
The current fashion in New Zealand seems to be to put in traffic lights at any intersection the 'consultants' recommend at considerable expense (I understand it costs about $300,000 (US$170,000) for most intersections to have lights installed). They are a PITA, waste electricity, cause excessive idling of cars and don't seem to do much compared to the previous round-about/give way intersection.

It works well in LA but not over here.. Those city planners deserve to be shot for the amount of economic loss and frustration this city has seen since the implementation of the lights. It just clogs up every single road around an onramp and doesn't really improve the flow of the motorway because Auckland's motorway system isn't that great.

Thats because in LA most roads have 3 lanes in each direction and then at intersections they often have extra turning lanes. This works due to the grid street pattern layout. It would be chaos to just have give-way or 4way stop there or a round-about...has to be traffic lights. Here in NZL however they put in traffic lights when there is a T intersection with 1 lane in each direction!! or put in 6 traffic light poles with overhead lights etc just for a pedestrian crossing on a road!! 3 would do and without the overhead lights, or put in zebra crossings with pedestrian refuge islands in the middle of the road. Its all over the top nanny-state.

Let me guess, Junction 29 of the M5 going onto the A30 Eastbound?  Wink

Conversely, I live 1 mile form the airport and have to pass 3 sets on the way to the terminal, and 9 on the way back. Basically a shortcut on the way there allows me to bypass several junctions and a major roundabout, but it's only a one way street.

From my home to PHL (about 5 to 6 miles), even when one uses the sidestreets (before getting on I-95 North (for only about a mile)), there are at least 4 traffic lights. Using the normal route, one encounters 8 or 9; most of which are along US 13 (Chester Pike).
