TV In Your Country?

Haven't had a thread like this since 2002.

Well the question is simple, what is the TV like in your country? channels etc.

Australian television has 5 major stations:

Seven Network

Nine Network

Network Ten

ABC

SBS

As well as these 5 major channels, there is 7HD, 9HD, One, SBS World News, ABC2, ABC3, SBS2.

All channels broadcast advertisments of about 10-15 per hour, except for the ABC.

Freeview Australia, is coming in April 2009, which will bring 15 channels. www.freeview.com.au

The ratings war for 2008, had Seven win the year overall, with Nine coming 2nd and Ten 3rd.

There are a few cable and satelite television services available throughout Australia. The major two are Foxtel and Austar.

So what is the television in your country like?

Oh I have stopped watching ANY US mainstream news network a few years back. They are all the same, I get to know stuff usually online (not from their websites either) and I feel I am better informed.

Not to say Australians are any better, I am sick of the self centered righteousness I smell hearing the NPR during the hours they broadcast IIRC Australia Pacific. Also watching some of the stuff The Chasers picked up on, I have no illusions. On a serious note, I think the media is responsible for nearly all the problems between nations.

I get my news from the internet and Fox.

In Canada you get quite a bit of stuff especially if you have digital because then you get a lot of specialty channels depending on your provider.

The Major Canadian networks are:

- CBC
- CTV
- City TV
- Global
- A Channel to a lesser extent

The US Networks we get are:

- CBS
- NBC
- ABC
- Fox
- A&E
- CNN
- TLC
- Spike TV

The Sports Channels we get are:

- Rogers Sportsnet
- TSN (owned 20% by ESPN so we get a lot of their shows)
- The Score

For a typical Rogers package we get these specialty channels without having digital:

- YTV
- CBC Newsworld
- CP24
- Women TV
- MuchMusic
- BBC World
- CMT
- Bravo
- History channel
- Discovery Channel Canada
- Teletoon
- The Comedy Network

Japanese television is possibly the worst in Asia outside of China. It's a dizzying array of dumb commercials (LIFE UP!!), boring family dramas (Kenji wants to go to medical school, but Kenji's parents can't afford it!), boring news (winter home fires by oil-heated stoves), infomercials, and pointless variety shows that either a. make fun of non-japanese people b. make fun of the same group of popular comedians or c. feature the same group of popular comedians.

The only bright spots are the incredible quality of the HD signals, particularly on the Broadcast Satellite public network. Every now and then NHK and Fuji Television, among others, have some spectacular travel documentaries that really take HD to its full potential. Unfortunately even the variety and all that other crap are broadcast in HD as well. There are a few high-quality news discussion shows as well, but they are never prime time and only air after 10 pm when nobody is really watching.

Subscription satellite with about 90 TV channels. Some additional specialist channels available for an extra charge.

In Costa Rica, the major terrestrial networks are (none of them have terrestrial HD and no digital TV à la DVB-T):

If you want cable in my home town, you better call Kabel Deutschland. Satellite TV however, not just in Germany but all across Europe, is free except for pay-TV services such as Premiere or Beate Uhse-TV. You just need to buy the dish with the receiver, point it either towards Astra (19.2° East) or Hotbird (13.0° East) and you're good to go.

In the Italian part of Switzerland, the TV offer is horrible to say the least. Except for the national public TV channels (TSI1 and TSI2) which make good news coverage and some nice, commercial-free TV series, there's basically no other choice.

We have the same channels which can be viewed in Italy:

- RAI1 / RAI2 / RAI3, the Italian public channels
- Canale 5 / Italia 1 / Rete 4, the main Italian private channels

The public channels show stuff nobody wants, and their target must be a 70+ aged audience.

The private channels mainly do those stupid reality shows where some kids dance in a competition, then everyone cries because they were so good at it, but they miss their parents or they broke up with someone, or some other tragedy. Oh, then there are comedians doing the same gags over and over. It was fun 10 years ago, but not anymore.
If they don't do this, they show movies - even good, new ones - but you get 8 minutes of commercials every 20 minutes. Unbearable.

Then there are about 100 channels doing online shopping all day long with no programs showing whatsoever (I wonder how they manage to stay in business).

Finally, yes, there's pay TV "Sky TV". With Sky you get hundreds of channels, of which several dozens are actually very nice. But guess what? It's satellite only (no cable or IPTV) and you can't legally get it in Switzerland. You have to "smuggle" a set top box and a subscription from Italy, and to do this, you need someone to act as a "proxy" in Italy to pay the subscription.

Ergo: I only watch our national TV channels, buy DVDs, or download whatever I want to watch. Or I watch TV in other languages - for example, in German I can get the (almost) entire TV offer there is in Germany, and they have dozens of interesting free-to-air channels, even on cable or IPTV.

I have tons of channels I never watch. TV in Belgium is split between two Dutch north and the French south. Here in Flanders, there are two major providers of digital TV, Telenet & Belgacom. I have the first one. The basic package offers me the major Belgian channels, lots of European public channels, and stuff like CNN, BBC world, National Geograpic...

Then I got an extra package which gives me a bunch of Discovery channels, Animal Planet, BBC 3, 4 & prime, Al Jazeera (english), Sci-Fi channel, MGM, TCM... usually the TV is on BBC world or Discovery...

Here in The UK a few years ago I would have said that we had the best TV going, but since the introduction of satellite TV the standard across the board has gone down, and sporting events which once were free to view are all now on pay TV to a great degree. Yes I do have satellite TV but after a few years it really is not worth having as it is all repeats.

You may ask why I have it well where I live in the UK satellite is the only way to get a decent picture, as the trees mask the terrestrial transmitter

I agree and thats why I ditched SKY ripp off pay TV. I invested GBP80 in a FreeSat HD Grundig box and never regret it. I get all the channels I need without paying. The box plugs into your old Sky dish. Very easy to connect and great for bad reception areas.

When I do choose to watch something, its usually something really worth watching.

Nothing is free. You still need a licence (cost about GBP 120) to receive TV transmissions but there is no extra charge to have freeview channels.

I have UPC Digital here in Ireland. Irish stations are RTE1, RTE2, TV3, 3E (A new entertainment channel like E4 in England), Channel South (a regional channel that I have never really paid much attention to) and CityChannel (a Dublin based channel that concentrates on all things Dublin). The rest of the content is English based or from the US. I enjoy CNN.

Oh in my college apartment we have some cheapo TV service that shows free to view channels from around the world. At least it has CNN. However, it has music stations from Pakistan and India which are interesting at times. The rest is made up of weird Christian or Muslim TV channels from around the world, which are entertaining in some odd way actually.

As far as I understand it the box and aerial are yours, or at least that is what they tell you when things go wrong. So I imagine if you drop your sky subscription then you loose access to subscription channels but keep most of the free view sat channels

My roommate watches TV every single night regardless of what's on, it's like she was brainwashed to watch anything that's on. I really can't stand most of it and the few I do like, I just watch it on my computer whenever I want. The medical dramas are usually the worst and so is anything on the CW. In general, I really don't care unless it's a sporting event or the occasional documentary on PBS.

Since my home country of Brazil isn't represented, I'll break it down. You have the major networks: Globo, SBT, Rede Record, Band, Gazeta, TV Cultura (the PBS equivalent) and Rede TV (formerly Rede Manchete, which were in frequent labor struggles and occasionally, the crew would go on strike and just a leave of piece of paper taped up against the camera like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8ZlRpKdWQk. It reads: "We have not been paid in 3 months." Later in that clip, there's a flyer advertising a concert that was intended to raise funds for its unpaid workers.)

Cable and satellite were only gaining popularity when I moved away so I'm not familiar with that scene, but I do remember there were a few state-owned networks from other countries in the line-ups like NHK, DW, BBC, RAI and RTP.

There were never any channels 1, 2, 3 etc. ABC 1 can be considered as Ch1, ABC 2 as ch2, ABC 3 as ch3. SBS1, SBS2 and SBS news sometimes come in Ch 4, 5 and 6 on my TV. 7 network, 9 network and Ten are all crap filled with ads and stupid shows like 'Biggest loser', 'Big Brother' etc. They broadcast some new TV series but as soon as the show gets interesting (like in the case of the Terminator TV series and 90210), it gets pulled and replaced with mind-numbing 'reality' shows. So I don't bother switching on these channels nowadays...thank heavens for Nat Geo and Discovery channel!

Nothing if you have finished your 12 month contract then you own the dish and the box , you owe them nothing. Then buy a Freesat box , unplug the Sky box and plug in the Freesat box and its as simple as ABC. No new wiring just scan for the channels with the Freesat box.

Apart from the HD and ABC2 etc variations there are some other minor stations, like NITV, the indigenous (Aboriginal) channel and, in Sydney, Channel 31 community tv. There's a Christian digital channel, parliamentary channels, traffic cam channel etc. What irritates me is that there is a digital channel devoted to "home shopping". Thanks to a newborn baby I've been awake in the wee hours of the morning when Channels 10 and 7 are both showing the "Home Shopping Network", while Channel 9 has some other named shopping show that sells the same products anyway. Surely the ACCC should be investigating for collusion! Four stations all selling the same crap at once!

All SBS has at that time is world weather and ABC is showing really boring black and white movies. Arrrghh! And don't get me started about Foxtel - I don't have it, but when I visit those that do I can't find anything to watch anyway.

I can't say I've seen any better TV elsewhere in Asia. Malaysian TV, for instance, seems mind numbingly bad, though it seems my wife was still able to watch many of the same cheesy 70's and 80's American SF series as me in Australia during our formative years! There was also this one series I saw in Thailand featuring black leather clad women doing really bad martial arts that seemed to have some promise... Smile

It SUCKS!

I can't believe how many channels we get that are total CRAP. But then again I guess the provider (Rogers) has it set up that way so that you have to keep adding packages just to get one or two channels. And of course there is a charge each time you add another package.

I am really sick of it.... and one day very soon I will get rid of it completely.

I'd rather be out spotting or just reading a good book.

Open air TV in Mexico is mostly crap, except for watching the news, soccer matches ans like 2 shows.

In Monterrey, Nuevo Leon these are the available channels on open tv:

Channel 2- Televisa XHTV
Channel 4- Azteca 13
Channel 6- Televisa XHGC (Canal 5)
Channel 7- Azteca 7
Channel 10- Televisa XEW ( I think this is the best channel)
Channel 12- Multimedios Estrellas de Oro
Channel 22- Galavison XEQ (also owned by Televisa)
Channel 28- TVNL (Nuevo Leon TV), runed by the State goverment.
Channel 34- Televisa (Televimex)
Channel 53- Canal de Conocimiento (runed by UANL, the state public university)

As you can see Televisa is almost a monopoly, only competed by TV Azteca and Multimedios. These are the channels that most Mexicans watch because they are free and all you need to watch them is a TV. Televisa has been known to be very biased in the past.

For quality program many people have pay systems like cable or "SKY" that uses a dish, just like DirectTV or Dish Network.

I subscribed to Foxtel in December it was the best investment I made in a long time. I pay around $60 AUD a month and get around 50 channels with the ability to record movies and watch them later.

haven't watched Free-to-air tv since. I'll see how One HD goes but if they don't have proper coverage of the AFL I will be subscribing to Fox Sports for the AFL season.
