In Central Florida it's probably around near 10% now, considering Florida was at 9.1% even before yesterday's report and C. fla probably has a bit higher unemployment than other parts of the state.
Would be interesting to see how different areas nationally and internationally compare.

I don't know about other countries in the world but here in England we do tend to hide our unemployment. It seems to me one in five males are unemployed but they are supposed to be ill or doing courses or some sort of leave.
Until wages rise and retail prices are controlled there seems little point in working at all.

Houston, TX is running at 6.5% up from 5.6%. Texas as a state is at 6.4%

In Lombardy (Italy), last year the unemployment rate was about 3,7%. Now, according to some unions there could be about 250,000 jobs at risk (the Region has 10,000,000 inhabitants).

Oregon's unemployment is so very different from county to county. Columbia County (northwest of Portland) is over 10%, but Harney County (far Southeast) and Crook County (Central) are 15% and Douglas County (Southwest) is about 14.5%. But, both Crook and Harney County only have populations of about 5000 or so. I think Oregon, as a whole, is about 8.5%.

In the Netherlands it's about 4.5%, datais from CBS based on 4th quarter of 2008. That means about 304.000 unemployed, up 3.000 unemployed when compared with 3rd quarter 2008.

In my country (Kosova) it is close to 50 %, but these are unofficial fact, cause there are many people hired and are not declared by they employee to avoid TAX and other stuff.
BTW if you take a visit to the bars and coffee shops and night club there are plenty of people drinking and having fun.

Just a quick remark, there are considerable differences in determining the rate of unemployment across the world. The rates posted here may not be comparable at all.

In Finland the rate is 7,0%, about the same than a year back. The recession hasn't hit Finland in a full force yet, tough the export sector is suffering.

Yes because they are all different and no because in the end they come back to the ILO defintion of work as being basically one hour a week. Not that the ILO is very keen to give an account that actually lets you know what the criteria are!!

Australia Jan 09 4.6 up from 4.5% in Dec 08. But employed persons rose in that period by 9,800 but seasonally adjusted only 1,200!!

Estimates are that if you were to include those "statisticked " out of the figures it would be about 8 or 9% that would be allowing for discouraged and underemployed.
So the percentage unemployed might be 4.6% but the % EMPLOYED is more like 92%.

That must be true.
I forgot to ad that so called 'temporary lay-offs' are typical in Finland. If your employer is in troubles, you don't necessarily loose your job right away. Your job will be 'freezed' for a certain period of time and state pays you unemployment money meanwhile.
If the times change, you can get your old job back.

The unemployment in our area is around 9%. The zip code we live in, in fact, has the highest unemployment rate in the state of Ohio.

Unemlpoyment has gone up the last 3 months or so by about 0.2-0.5% in all parts of Belgium
for example, at the end of Februari my region (Flanders) went up from 3.9 -> 4.3% which is a rather steep climb.

That was a small pun, but I certainly hope you find your feet. I have been laid off and fired a bunch of times in my life (seven or so that I can remember) and it never is a good time but I can tell you one thing with absolute certainty.
It focuses the mind wonderfully on what is important and what needs doing. All of a sudden there are no questions about the priority that things may take. That's all taken care of, and the result is slimmed down, uncomplicated, and focused thinking that has only one thing in mind and that is takin' care of da business.
The firings and layoffs that I have had, taking the long view, have usually led to something far better. They have all served to refocus me on self reliance and getting my own iron rice bowl.

Where I live, the island of Jersey, the unemployment rate (as at June 2008) was slightly over 2%, or 438 people. (The island's population is about 90%).

Oh well, there are at least two of us underwhelmed at the stats that are put out and worshipped with such remarkable fervour.
There was a huge fuss about this here under the Howard government (which was trying a few extra wheezes to reduce the numbers) but in the end it came down to the waffle from the ILO which as I wrote translates in the end to one hours work a week and you are "employed".
Since the whole basis for the unemployment stats is a marvellously fanciful recalculation of the results of a survey, you would suppose it would not be too difficult to do one of the recalculations that would represent the % REALLY really employed. I mean if you can work out the seasonally adjusted unemployment (as our lot do every time) surely the % actually employed would be of interest to someone - other than thee and me!!
The other question that should be asked on this thread, has anyone here every been subject to one of these surveys? I never have. And when you look at the stats by regions, you would suppose that relatively small populations should be regularly surveyed, but I have never even heard of anyone who has been asked!

Where I have lived in Argentina (Mendoza), is 4.0% in the first weeks of 2009. Mendoza has had a lower rate than the national number for the last 10-15 years.
Its also fair to say underemployment, those who want or need more work, is probably 15% even as high as 20%. But that's always been a problem global crisis or not.
Mendoza has a booming (and I mean booming) fine wine industry, which is spreading the wealth all over the province and not just in one place like oil, a shopping mall, or a factory. This is creating the boom in wine tourism. Mendoza already had important adventure tourism with Aconcagua and rafting, and winter tourism with the ski resorts like Las Leñas. So you wine tour in the fall, ski in winter, visit the city and shop in spring, and wine hop and mountain climb in summer. And the world's largest and increasingly most famous wine festival. Now that's a great package...
It has oil reserves and huge investment are being made there, it has minerals, and the retail and service sectors are investing big $ in 5 star hotels and malls. Many other fruits are grown and organic exports are growing. Mendoza being close to economic model Chile helps when the rest of Argentina is not doing as well, but then when Chile slows down as in the last couple of years growth in Argentina helps. Mendoza has ar reputation for great economic management, it did not default on debt back in the 2001 crisis.
The biggest problem is crime, such economic growth is creating sprawling suburbs and downtown development but still that 20-30% of the population is excluded and the wealth disparities create resentment.
