I've got a small application that monitors CPU usage in real time and I noticed on certain websites Chrome would gobble up all my processor's capacity and bring me to a crashing halt. My initial problems with Internet Exploder were more or less the same, so I've installed Firefox 3 and things look fine so far. Of course I'm watching.

I hve been running FF3 for a month or so, and have been wondering what took me so long.
The add-ons are what makes FF so powerful.
I've got 20 or so various ones installed, and all make for a better experience.

Me too I dumped it a few weeks ago after sticking and crashing issues.

Could you recommend some ? I only have about two installed. I notice that when uploading to photobucket it wont work with Bulk uploader.

Adblock Plus and Download Statusbar are my favorites. Adblock Plus is the well known advertisement blocker. Download Statusbar replaces the separate downloads window that comes up when you download a file with a little bar across the bottom of the browser window.

In terms of download managers for Firefox, you can't go wrong with Download Them All

So far, so good. All I'm interested in is a computing experience that is uncomplicated and functional, given the age and decrepitude of my computer-it is now five years old.

Very true.
I really enjoyed Opera but the add ons to Firefox makes me use FF these days.
I use adblock like everyone else but I also use PDF downloader, the IE tab and some dictionaries.
My only problem with Firefox so far has been when I have wanted to watch certain streamed TV.
No not porn, proper TV channels usually football matches. Like yesterday it couldn't handle one of the channels streaming Arse vs Burnley. I prefer to watch TV online instead of paying Murdoch and his Sky any money.

Have you tried to get your hands on IE 6.0? I have used it with XP forever and it has turned out to be the most stable and frugal browser I've experienced. (still far from perfect, though)
I'll do my own airline. With Blackjack. And hookers. In fact, forget the airline.

FF3 has been a huge pain in the butt for me. It works ok on my brothers vista unit but sucks on my xp machine. It sometimes won't let me log on to sites, (it has a particular hate for yahoo mail). I've done clean installs after uninstalling ff2...twice.
I like the features but it's just not working for me yet. Too bad...I've been a big fan of FF for years but so far it's been too much of a pain to live with.

Mine also . Im changing my laptop soon but its only for home so I think I will get a standard base unit and monitor , anyone know whats the best base unit that will not cost a fortune??
Basically I want large memory and fast process times.

Don't do much uploading, mostly do downloading, and as per above, Download Them All is great.
In addition to the above, the ones I can't live without are IE Tab (lets you start a web site using IE, so you never have to use IE's weak user interface) and Tab Mix Plus (lets you control every aspect of tabbed browsing).

I also recently have added PDF Download (lets you choose if PDFs will be opened in the browser or in Adobe Acrobat or saved to disk) and ColorZilla (lets you determine what colors a web page is using so you can clone them in your own web pages).

I do use IE6 when called upon, but it had some of the same processor hogging episodes that let me to want to try Chrome.
The utility I use is called Cacheman XP, and it has a little window on the lower bar that shows you exactly how much of the processor is in use. When you see something hogging the processor you can click on the icon and see exactly what file is doing the dirty deed.

I have been using the same desktop for five years, because I really do not like laptops very much and because I am opposed to planned obsolescence. I use laptops when I have to and I even own one but I let the Dragon Lady use it.
Mine is a Dell Dimension 4600 with a 2.8ghz P-IV processor and 1.5 gb or RAM. It's been remarkably trouble free, too.

Thanks , I find that the screen is starting to go on my Fujitsu/Siemens which I paid €1500 for. Sometimes I have to open and close the lid to make the screen come on.
I have a Dell at my office desk which I am typing on now and its never given me any trouble over the last year that I have had it. Might have a look at Dell , maybe there are some deals these days.

I had a Toshiba laptop for a couple years, cost me about $1,400 and one day I was sitting there watching the tube and idly trolling the web and *pop*. The mother board died right then and there. I ended up selling it for parts. It had never been abused or neglected.
Right now I've got an HP not because I wanted to but I need it for my work if I go out on the road I have to be able to teach classes from remote locations.

I've been lucky. I've had 2 Dell laptops that never failed on me. I had the first for 3 years and was still working when I gave it away and my current unit is a 4 year old xps. I've had to replace a cooling fan.
Both laptops have hundreds of thousands of miles on them, having been bashed through aircraft and airports around the world on a regular basis.

For travelling I got an Eeepc and Im happy with it for basic surfing and checking email. Also good to watch when Im on a flight if I download a movie or music videos etc.. The small size of screen does not suit everyone though but for me its ok.

I seem to, when installing the latest update of Itunes, acquired Safari.
Have only been using it a short time, but really do like it. Im not getting the anet errors I was with Chrome which were driving me a little nuts, and its more user friendly then IE.

If I posted this a week ago I would have said I loved Chrome. However, after reading all the responses and downloading some add-ons for Firefox I don't think I'll ever go back. Thanks for showing me the light.

While a few websites give problems with my Opera under XP, the same websites are okay when using Opera under Ubuntu ...
In any case, FF3 is a very good alternative for both OS's.
In the end it comes down to personal preference ...

If you use multiple computers, Foxmarks is absolutely indispensable for synching bookmarks between the machines. I also have installed DownloadHelper to capture videos. Forecast Fox for weather; Google Notes & Grease Monkey.
BTW, IE8 isn't bad. I use both FF3 & IE since I also rely on Microsoft's excellent SkyDrive and OfficeLive for online file storage and access. Of course, one can access via Firefox as well, but there are advantages to uploading files using IE.
